Brazil Model Amputation

Mariana Bridi da Costa, the Brazilian model who had to have her hands and feet amputated due to septicemia caused by a urinary infection passed away on Saturday.

“God is comforting our hearts because he wanted her to be with him now,” her father Agnaldo Costa told reporters outside the hospital where his daughter died. “I can’t accept that my daughter left us so soon.”

What an awful, awful end to this story.

This poor family. I hope they find the comfort they need right now.

  • This makes me appreciate American doctors all the more. Maybe American doctors tends to order more test, that insurance company protest, but it is a good argument for that.
This beautiful young women was mis-diagnosed and sent home! Then she lost her extremeties and now her life. Her mother must just be beside herself.

    • You’ve obviously never watched TLC they show all sorts of ppl who have been misdiagnosed by American doctors for years. If it isnt common its easy to be misdiagnosed. Still horrible news, quite scary that you can die so unexpectedly.

  • okay, this may sound cynical.. but I mean this in the best way possible.. Isn’t it better for the girl to just peacefully pass away, than to live life without her hands and feet? Or am I the only one thinking that?

    • totally with you on that
horrible would have been she staying alive w/out hands and feet, this actually is good news

    • Uh, peacefully? This 20-year-old, recently vibrant young woman (I left out ‘beautiful’ only because that shouldn’t be an overly relevant attachment to the tragedy of this story) went to the hospital feeling ill — twice (once, misdiagnosed) — she then had to have emergency surgery to save her life whereby doctors amputated her feet, then amputated her hands, and then amputated parts of her stomach — all to no avail, as a super-destructive bacteria ravaged her body.

I see the makings of your point and I hope Mariana rests in peace and I wholly agree that this is tragic, but short of actual torture, I’m hard-pressed to think of a more horrible, less peaceful way to go, induced coma notwithstanding.

      • I think thats a terrible thing to say. I bet her family members who are mourning her loss would have wanted her to stay living with or without her hands and feet, and im willing to bet everything that she would have felt the same. You are entirely too conserned with vanity. Appearance isnt anything. People who have been amputated have come to do amazing things that no one thought they ever would be able to do. Also, it was her HANDS and FEET that were removed not her entire arms and legs. I have a friend who has had one hand amputated at the wrist and she is able to do nearly everything with her arm that i can with my hand. Its all about adaptation, im sure this girl could have done the same. Afterall, she was only 20 years old, and had her whole life to achieve functioning.

What a terrible thing of you appearance obssessed people to day.

      • ehm, no, its not vanity..
she wouldnt be able to walk or do Anything with her hands people!
What kind of life would she have?
She would just have to lay in bed all day, and have other people feed her/do anything else with her.
She wouldnt be able to do Anything on her own!
Its so not about vanity here. Just to make that clear.

      • Shz-

Im sorry it wasnt vanity then…it was ignorance. my mistake. Why dont you try educating yourself on the amazing things people without legs or ams can do. Ill make it simple for you: Go to youtube, type in no hands no feet. That guy can do everything you can and probably better. Your a disgrace…shed have to lay in bed? You must be blind to the amazing achievements of people out there.

Oh and he also has no feet but can still walk….get a clue.

      • I also hope that you do not or ever even consider having children. Because for every challenge they faced youd tell them to give up and lay in bed or just end their lives. what a terrible view of life. people do amazing things.

    • i agree with shz. i wouldn’t want to live if i didn’t have hands and feet. i don’t care if that makes me “vain” and “ignorant”. i would hate myself because of it. i wouldn’t even be able to look at myself because i would be so discusted with myself. i would rather die than have no hands and feet.

      • It’s alright if you guys wouldn’t want to live like that, but I think it’s really insensitive to say something like that about someone you nothing about. What if some of her family were to come on here and see that people wrote it was better for her to die? It’s your personal choice, fine, but show a little sensitivity in your comments.

By the way,in Victorian times, people who were blind or deaf were put in homes or out on street, because ‘normal’ people felt they were ‘less than human’ and wouldn’t be able to live productive lives.

  • i lived at the same hotel as her at the Natal fashion week in Natal – RN (brazil) , she was really sweet and very popular and since i was one of the new ones, i didnt know her, but i only heard good things about her.
    RIP, Mari

    • easy there cowboy..

I think those people were born without extremities, so they learned to live with it.. But whatever. I just said that I thought it wasnt all that sad, because she lived life being model, speaking about vanity… and as a normal human being, and now she would have changed her whole life. But again, whatever. Its not like I ended her life or anything. Didnt want to offend anyone, and I dont think you have anything to say about me not having children if I feel like it.

  • Not to detract from the horror that this story is, but, what is all this I “hope” she rests in peace crap that so many (not just this site) are pushing around. As if she has any other choice but to rest.

    Sorry… rough day.

  • Whoa, given the choice to die because I don’t have any hands or feet, or live, I choose life. Every Time.

  • The first thing I thought when I read this update was “I hope those assholes who said she would be better off dead feel bad about what they said now.”

    Nope. Guess not.

  • I’m brazilian like Mariana and I followed every step of her awfull ordeal through local midia and assure you, she wanted to live more than anything, she talked to her boyfriend about the many things she still had to do, she was very strong and foght for her life to the very end.
I pray for her and her family…

  • I HAVE TWO COMMENTS PRESENTLY POSTED!! PLEASE READ THEM CAREFULLY AND OBIDE!! FOR LIFE MUST BE SUSTAINED. PREVAIL LIFE ITSELF; DO NOT PREVARICATE, (EVADE THE TRUTH, OR LIE). EXCEPT THE FACT THAT WE AS HUMAN BEINGS MUST BE EDUCATED OF HOW THIS BODY OF OUR ARE MADE; AND, WHAT IT TAKES TO SURVIVE.

  • She looked, to me, as a person who would love life, no matter her disablity. She was striking beautiful. I can not express the grief her parents are going through. I would wish it on no one. May she rest in the peaceful domain of our Lord.
