The Dangers of Skiing

Ahem.

Total. Awesomeness.

In a bizarre incident that will surely lead to litigation (or an out-of-court settlement), a skier at Colorado’s ritzy Vail resort was left dangling upside down and pantsless from a chairlift last Thursday morning. The January 1 mishap apparently occurred after the male skier, 48, and a child boarded a high-speed lift in Vail’s Blue Sky Basin. It appears that the chairlift’s fold-down seat was somehow not in the lowered position, which caused the man to partially fall through the resulting gap. His right ski got jammed in the ascending chairlift, and that kept him upended since his boot never dislodged from its binding. As seen in the photos on the following pages (which were snapped by fellow skiers), the Skyline Express lift was stopped shortly after the pair’s botched boarding resulted in the man dangling from the lift. The exposed skier was stuck for about 15 minutes before Vail personnel backed the lift up and successfully dislodged the unidentified man from the four-seat chair. The images on page four and five were taken by Marty Odom (who can be reached at martyodm@gmail.com if you’re interested in licensing the photos). In a statement released this afternoon, Vail Resorts, which operates the ski area, reported that the skier was not injured after being “suspended for approximately seven minutes.” The press release did not explain how the mishap occurred, only that “the man was caught on the chair.”

  • omg that must have been a bit painful…and hilarious. id sue too once i could face the public again.

  • I think I’m going to write ole’ Marty just to tell him he’s an asshole. He is the reason people like me develop agoraphobia. Bastid. Don’t look at me!

  • this has to be for jackass, could that actually be real? i’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, and then wow….that is so awesome…

  • I saw this story on the last hour of the “Today” show Hosted by my two favorite saucy, Milf wenches Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. They were dissappointed that the photos in the newspaper were blurred and that there wasn’t any video of the incident. Kathie Lee was particularly interested in the “angle of his dangle” and the effect of the cold weather. If Frank Gifford ever gets tired of her, I want that woman.

  • Ok…been skiing since I was 4. Been on a lot of chairlifts at a lot of different resorts, and have actually operated a lift one season when I was going to college. Seen a lot of weird ski shit over the years. I absolutely cannot think of a chain of events that would ever lead to this!! How the fuck did his pants get down around his ankles and why didn’t he reach up there and pull them back on??? Oh and P.S. It DOES NOT take 7 minutes to reverse a chairlift. It is essentially like putting the stick shift of a car in reverse and pushing a button. The lift operator was being a prick and probably deserves a lawsuit.

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAaa

oh so horrible.. oh so hilarious… I feel really bad for this guy and I hope he gets like 10 million dollars. not exactly a story you would want to tell your grandkids!

  • i can imagine just skiing down a hill and then looking up to see a penis wagging off the ski lift. I would be very confused, thats for sure…

  • getting stuck on a ski lift is my worst athletic-type fear come true…thank god it happened to someone else.

  • that family is definitely going to have to frame that photo…”children, gather around, look what happened to grandpa a few years back!” tee hee!

  • I like how everyone is all, “But how did his pants get stuck like that?” without first being really creeped out that they did somehow get stuck like that while he was in a lift with a KID.

  • I think that kid is going to be traumatized for life…

It also seems like the staff took their sweet time getting that man out of his embrassing predicament…. Photos 3 and 5 really crack me up… ;)

  • This appears funny at first. I was 2 chairs behind this guy and fun did not enter our minds. The guy was hanging on like that for a hour and passed out a couple times. The area we where in was way out back at Vail and it took ski patrol some time to get there.
We sat on the lift for 2 hours waiting for him to be rescued. This is the failure of all of Vail resorts. I spend the winters there and see bad chairlift accidents every week.
