Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is on target to be the largest Wednesday midnight opening ever, with $20M in ticket sales.  The record was previously held by Dark Knight with an $18M open.  It’s been two years since Harry Potter fans got their fix.  Order of the Phoenix opened in 2007, also with a Wednesday midnight opening, and brought in $12M.

Did any of you go see it?  Thoughts?  Reviews?

UPDATE:  Looks like it’s more like $22M.

  • This film is definitely the best HP movie so far, I was really impressed! The actors have really come into their roles and the acting was quite good. Gorgeous cinematography and actually a lot of hilarious lines. Overall a really enjoyable experience. :)

  • The film, as a film was very very good, tho it is hard to compress a 500 page novel into any sort of consumer film i hard, it conveyed the story well enough. And it’s always good to see that Emma’s acting skills have progressed past her over animated eye brows.

  • My favorite HP film to date as well! It was brilliant. Definitely a progression in the trio’s acting. Lots of humor…we got laughs from Emma, Rupert and even Dan, who was surprisingly funny. I wasn’t particularly fond of the additional scenes (first scene in the diner and the destruction of the Burrow), but the screenwriting for the series does seem to be improving.

  • It was awesome. The actors did a brilliant job, and the way the character relationships progressed was excellent. I’m so glad I saw it. The only problems were that so much was left out. They added a battle at the Burrow, which made no sense at all and added nothing at all, but they left out a crucial battle at hogwarts. 3.5/4 stars

    • You said it perfectly. It was the best of the movies so far (which is good because it’s totally my favorite of the books) but I was super disappointed that there was no quidditch match after party where Harry and Ginny first kiss. That was one of the best parts of the book!

  • I’ll wait for it to be on TNT during Christmas next year…

Then again, I probably won’t watch it then either.

  • Whoa! How tough is it for poor Daniel to be the only one who hasn’t had the growth spurt yet?

Shows how much attention I’ve been paying.
Is she just tall or is he that short?

  • I think this HP film is the best yet. They just keep improving drastically with each film. I was not a fan of the random Weasley battle scene or the diner scene, but other than that, it was absolutely fantastic! Each of the characters is developing so greatly, and the effects just keep getting better and better. I was really, really impressed with how great they did for putting a 600-something page book into such a great show.

  • It was strangely lacking in magic, filmically. The performances weren’t especially strong on anyone’s part, the battle scenes weren’t scary and I didn’t like the almost sepia-toned, muted palette of the whole film. I thought that a lot of dramatic impact was lacking.

I thought it deviated too much from the book. Why deviate when you have such good material to start with? The so-called “creatives” like the screen writers are infatuated with themselves.

I thought that the acting was actually less good by Emma Watson.

But still, a Harry Potter movie is a pleasure and I’m happy that it’s out. I might see it again at some point.

  • Wendie, today is Wednesday.. How do you know how much it is going to bring in tonight?

    I haven’t seen it but I will…

    • It opended midnight, which is late tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
She was just talking about the midnight opening, not the entire day, so it’s pretty obvious how she could know how much money it brought in.

And in other words, I went, but I was a little disappointed.

  • I still say she got breast implants. She used to be flatter than a 12 year old boy. Nobody develops that late in life.

  • I’m starting to fancy Rupert. Is that bad? I realise he’s half my age, and a ranga, but there’s something…

    • Haha I totally agree. During the movie I was like, wow, he and Daniel have really matured and are lookin good….Although I guess its less creepy for me since they are only slightly younger than me.

  • How come I didn’t really see any pictures from the premier?! I want Luna pictures!

  • Wow I feel like I must have watched a different movie to you guys or something! I thought it was the worst HP movie to date. Waaay to much teenage love drama and not enough wizarding. Unnecessary additions to the story (diner opening and burrow exploding) whilst missing out on things that actually happened in the book.

It seemed like after two hours they went “shit this movie is too long, quick wrap it up!” then crammed in the last part into about 15 minutes. Oh and the most shit part. They didn’t have the fucking funeral.

    Very disappointed

    • THANK YOU. My friend and I are huge HP fans and we HATED it. I feel like the last 3 movies have veered so far from the storyline that now they’ll never get it back on track. The books are barely even a guideline anymore. Why the F does the Burrow have to blow up? No Dumbledore funeral? No Weasley wedding? I thought this was the crappiest film adaptation of a book I’ve ever seen, up to and including the big dump Disney took all over The Black Cauldron. Terrible, terrible movie, and I’m dreading the hatchet job they must be doing on Deathly Hallows.

  • I thought that it was one of my favorites, not my all time favorite though because I love the third one, but it is up there.

I also thought that Tom Felton (Malfoy) did an amazing job. To me he was the best actor of the bunch. The other main characters seem to becoming better actors as well. Except Daniel Radcliff, he is just awkward.

    • I agree with you on the fact that Tom Felton did a fantastic job with his character in this movie. I felt that the pressure setting in on him was pretty much on par on how they portrayed it in the book. They did tweak some scenes and I’d have preferred them as is in the book, but he really shone in this movie nonetheless. He definitely showed that despite the fact that Draco is completely screwed up in some ways, he still is not a killer.
