Last week Ralph Lauren came under fire for publishing a picture of model Filippa Hamilton looking atrociously gaunt.  It’s a clear example of abuse by Photoshop.

Now Hamilton has revealed that she was fired by Ralph Lauren for being too fat.  The model told New York Daily News that the Ralph Lauren company was like family until this spring when they kicked her fat ass — as shown in second picture above — out the door.  Does anyone see the irony in the fact that this chick is posing in front of a bunch of candy dispensers?  Yeah, she’s so not fat.

Seriously, can we call for a boycott or something against companies that are terminating employees based on 5’10” being defined as “too heavy”?

  • To make it more realistic, they should have had her in a hospital bed in the ICU with a feeding tube up her nose and monitors reading her vitals. Oh, and don’t forget the crying family asking the doctors if she’ll survive the next two days.

My sister actually looked like that at one point in her life, and she nearly died as a result. She couldn’t even stand or move on her own because her body had started eating her own muscles to survive.

To use this image as “advertising” is sick. Unfortunately, we live in a free country, so these idiots can use whatever image they want. The idea is that society as a whole, must reject it. It won’t be effective, and therefore will lose it’s value as an advertising ploy. The problem is, clearly this is still working on some section of consumer.

    • Completely agree! Im worried who this part of sociwty the ad was aiming at is supposed to be! clearly not people with a healthy body image :S
fyi: this ad came out in japan
I hope your sister is recovering, hugs!

    • “Unfortunately, we live in a free country”???

I agree that this picture is heinous and disgusting, but it is definitely NOT unfortunate that we live in a free country. And obviously there has been a huge backlash due to the photo and people ARE rejecting it. Be glad we have the right to object to it.

  • Damn she IS a huge cow in that second picture! How could they possibly want to photograph THAT?! Fatty.

…Guess who won’t be buying anything from Ralph Lauren anymore?

  • No more RL for me (and I love their linens), and I hope more people with speak with their wallets. What they did was HEINOUS!

  • I am fine with a level of retouching, it’s going to be done and I can accept that. But I can’t believe someone actually saw that ad and gave it the OK thinking that on some planet that was even close to normal. Even as a size zero she wouldn’t look so horribly disproportionate! Like Missou said a woman who looked like that in real life would straight up not be able to support the breasts they gave her let alone stand up and pose! Ridiculous.

  • 5?10? is kind of heavy. I just learned that 5?10? is an actual weight.
Model says she was fired for being too heavy. Blogger calls for Ralph Lauren boycott based on she-said they-said PR (i.e. pre- lawsuit). Several blog readers sign up for boycott and forgo RL linens. World falls apart.

    • I’m sure Wendie meant to write “based on being 5’10” [she is also reported as actually being 5’8″] and 120 lbs. being fat…”, but she forgot the weight part. Oops.

  • ummmm….why is no one commenting on her FACE? FUG. i saw a clip of her on the today show and nearly fell over–FUGLY. They clearly have been photoshopping the fUG out of her face for YEARS. good lord.

    • I agree. Not that she’s totally fug, but she’s not that pretty. I don’t think she’s fat. Just a little bit ugly.

      • I didn’t even notice her face. I could not get past the heinous body in that first picture. Does that mean the advertising worked? Were they going for shock value?

  • If pic #2 constitutes obesity then I might as well shoot myself in the head because I’m a dam whale shark.

  • I’m still stuck on the ad. Is that supposed to look real? Even skeletons, and I mean literal skeletons, aren’t that narrow. It looks fake an frankly disturbing.

  • The Ad pic is bizarre. She looks like a giant head bratz doll.
She looks great in the second pic.

But I think the real irony is this:
She chose to work in an industry that is BASED on looks…it’s okay to be hired for her looks/size/weight…presumably being judged on those qualities at one time was fine by her. But she doesn’t seem to understand that it is also okay to be fired because RL may no longer choose her look to represent their company. Really??

    • Except the point is that her weight hadn’t changed, the sample sizes were made smaller and smaller because designers have such a fucked-up vision of how women are supposed to look. For an example, see the first picture. She’s not fat, but now they want a model who looks like an extremely ill anorexia victim, not just a super-slim woman or a heroin addict like they did in the past.

Companies like Ralph Lauren are supposedly making clothes to sell to the general public–how are we supposed to look good in clothing designed for anorexia victims?

  • I dont usually do the higly overpriced ralph lauren anyway
but the deserve a boycott for being such assholes!
the best part for me is all the negative publicity they’re getting jajaja

  • Ralph himself should go on nation tv and apologize to women everywhere. HIS name is on the door – therefore, the buck stops at his desk.

Take a look at the Jet Blue business apology letter if you have no good advisors in your company to help you – a good start.

Unitl then, just say no to Ralph’s clothes, accessories, shoes and home furnishings.

There are many great designers/companies to buy from who don’t demean women and then complain/litigate when the proof gets out!

I have lots of RL in my closet – purple, black and every other label. I won’t be buying anymore. Ever. Unless I get an apology.

    Are you listening, Ralph?

  • Are the magazine editors not supposed to touch up a picture to make it look BETTER? This is deplorable. If this woman (like someone commented above) really is 5’8″ and 120 pounds, there is no way she could possibly be fat!! I am 5’3″ and weigh 115 pounds, and I wear a size 2. I can share jeans with my daughter, who is still in elementary school, and I’m constantly being told I’m too thin, despite the fact that I’m this way naturally. It gives me a young and boyish look, and I only wish I had more curves! If this is what RL considers beautiful, there must be something wrong with his head. It is a well-documented fact that men do not like women Concentration-Camp thin, and most women don’t like the look of it either, whether on themselves, or someone else. I was relieved to see the second picture, model looking healthy and glowing.

I have come to the conclusion recently that runway models are meant to look STYLISTIC, as if they were a stick drawing with angular lines. I also know that runway models are supposed to display the clothes as if they were hanging on a hanger. There is something very wrong with that picture.

I blame the media for the sufferings of countless young women and even men, for wanting to look “beautiful.” It’s about time we took a stand as a group and said models of the world, your diets are over! Maybe then all the anorexics and bulimics of the world would start eating again too.

    • dear E-

anorexia and bulimia are serious mental illnesses which are caused by a range of things, most commonly issues of control and perfectionism. stopping photoshopping of models would not cure the anorexics and bulimics of the world and make them “start eating again” your comment is ignorant but sadly typical of people who are uninformed and feel like they can comment about other people’s problems.

anyway this was not published as an ad it was mistakenly put out in japan and found it’s way onto the internet. it is obviously a really bad job of photoshopping which was leaked accidentally.

  • They think that’s fat? They ought to take a look at me, now I’m truly fat. Maybe they should keep a few women at normal weight around to compare their models to, help them realize how far off the norm they are.
    Boycott RL!
