Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Britney Does Alanis

Britney Spears performed in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday night.  This is significant for a couple of reasons:  1)  She did a cover of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” 2)  She sang it live — no lip-synching and 3)  She sounded really good!

The video and audio quality isn’t tops here, but you’ll get the basic idea.  Maybe it’s time for Britney to abandon her pop tart tunes and go for some more gritty material that she can — oh, I don’t know — actually sing.  The human voice matures, and maybe it’s time for our gal Spears to step it up regarding her material selection.

I admire Brit for rising from the ashes when everyone thought she was down for the count, but I’d be pissed to go to a concert just to see her mouth some over-produced music.  This clip seems more like real performing!

  • Now that was a good Britney post.

You can finally give credit when it’s due. :)

She did great. It’s fitted to her vocal range and is not as high as her other songs, and it sounded so raw and emotional.

    Go Brit!

  • I’m disappointed by the reaction to Britney’s performance on other sites – and I wonder if anyone who’s saying she sounded like shit has actually tried to sing that song, and sing it well. It’s almost like Alanis wrote it that way so that she’d be the only one to sing it. Given Britney’s soft voice (compared to Christina or Pink), I’m surprised she even attempted the whole song, much less just a portion.

She did great. Now she just needs to work on the clothes and hair..

  • Well it is a treat to see her actually sing live. I have never seen her perform that is was not lip sync. Ever.

And this is the kind of song you gotta have a little anger in you to sing it. Which is why I always loved Alanis entire album Jagged Little Pill. Girl was p*ssed when she wrote that album and it made it great.

So I am assuming that Britney got a little anger in her right now… that she is trying to work out. Good for her!

  • What proof is there that is was live? It may have been pre-recorded at a venue like this but I doubt very much she would risk singing live. Why would she start now, she never has since her childhood days.

  • She sounded great. “You outta know” will forever be my favorite bitter breakup song. :) NEVER gets old.
