Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Whitney’s Voice Ain’t What It Used To Be

As we told you a little while back, Whitney Houston is back but she’s currently refusing to do any interviews with journalists who want to ask her about her previous drug abuse. Well, now that her single’s been released, it’s hard to wonder how she thinks she can avoid these questions for much longer.

The single, “Million Dollar Bill” disguises the deterioration of her voice with a bouncy beat, but there’s no denying that her voice has taken a serious hit. Hey, sucking on a crack pipe will do that to a girl. I think if she avoids ballads, she may be able to make a strong comeback with dancey music, but it’s such a shame that the voice we all grew up loving is now history.

  • Uhhhh……getting old will also do that to your voice. Why do you assume that it’s the drugs?

    • Inhaling any kind of smoke damages your vocal chords. And she’s grown older, she’s not old, however that wouldn’t make her sound as bad as she does here.

      That song SUH- UCKS!!!

    • My friend recommended me a very interesting place RichKiss –C O M It’s where wealthy singles looking for someone to enjoy their wealthy lifestyle with:

  • Wow – that sounds like crap.

Its really sad. I remember ‘The Bodyguard’ days. Now THAT was a fantastic voice.

  • Um. That? Is an interesting song choice.

Her voice doesn’t sound great at all. Not in comparison to what she used to sound like. Old age, crack pipes, whatever. It doesn’t hold the same Whitney power that it used to. And from that song alone–I’m not sure I want to hear anything else.

  • Very sad. Smoking anything longterm will fuck your voice. Smoking damage can be overcome if it’s not too extreme, but it does take years. I wish Whitney the best of luck with sobriety.

  • Love Whitney, but yeah her voice is going. I still love to blast It’s Not Right but it’s OK remix when I’m happy, sad, whenever.

  • Whitney is this generation’s Judy Garland – a tremendously talented and beautiful girl who lost it all to drugs and who we all are going to watch die slowly.

    Hope I’m wrong.

  • I love Whitney. What a living testimony to what drugs can do to a person. She had such promise. Now it is gone. It makes me want to cry. Blessings and hope to you, Whitney.

  • It ain’t what it used to be. But I really don’t know very many female singers over 40 who have kept their voices. Usually they have to cover it up with techno shit like Madonna. Same for male singers. It’s just the nature of the life they lead and performing.

    • And poor technique. Well-trained singers can keep singing into their eighties without sounding any the worse.

      • I have to agree. As I was taking vocal training in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I can remember my instructor commenting that Mariah and Whitney both had great natural ability, but the “full throttle” style of singing they were doing would wear their voices out over time. K.C. from Jodeci and Johnny Gill, were also known for “blowing” during their time in the spotlight, and it has taken a toll on their voice. If you listen to Barbra, Chaka or Patti sing today, you can tell they have aged, but even at their age, their voices have held up remarkably well over time.

  • I like the song. Sounds like something you can play at a cookout or something. I heard Alicia Keys wrote the song. I do get the “Noone” vibe from this song so that makes sense.

  • At least as Joni Mitchell got older and her voice got all fucked from smoking she worked it and still put out great songs… Whitney isn’t even trying to adapt to what she can sing

  • She sounds horrible! There are many singer much older who still sound great. Sorry, Whitney, but you are officially over. Too bad.

  • Hopefully someone will make Amy Winehouse listen to this song so she’ll stop being the crackhead we all know (and love?).

  • I would not have recognized that it is her voice if I heard this track on the radio. The voice sounds so much flatter now, what a waste.

  • I think that the negative comments about whitney is pure hateration. Most of us could only wish to sound half as good as whitney.

  • Well, Billie Hollidays voice sounded great, some think even better, after she was a full blown addict. Whitney should be singing “Good morning heartache” instead of pop and people would start buying her shit again. We all love junkies, just look @ Amy Winehouse.

  • She truly had a gift she crack smoked away. I hope she is able to cobble a career together because she blew through all her money, but she’s not got the voice to do long tours, she’ll end up canceling most of the dates because her voice won’t hold out, and I’m pretty sure that there was a lot of studio magic to make it sound as good as it does. She never would have had the career she did if that was her voice originally, she’d been a lounge singer in Jersey instead of a world revered singer/artist.

    Wow.

  • You people are all dumb….. Whitney still will be a huge world music seller. She still is the best. Poeple that hate need to get over it.

    • We know your black.. stop supporting her for no reason at all..

We all know she ws brilliant…. no one will deny it ..

But if she doesnt sound good now .. then she actually doesnt….

live with it .. dont just support her at every juncture just because you are black like her !

      • was that comment diected towards m e? because it was in y inbx- I have only ust respondd to an article about Whineyon this site,an I’m not black, so that comment robably wsn’ directed towards me.Oh, and I nly said that beause I know that the throar is known to heal when damaged- I had a bad voice for a while after I gave up smoking .. . cigarettes.

  • To all the posters who claim that those of us that don’t like the song and/or her voice are “haters?” So by your logic, you have to like everything? Always? Otherwise you’re a hater? What if you just have good taste? That song sucks. It’s horrible. It wouldn’t matter who sings it, it’s a bad song. And even if her voice was perfect, the song would still suck. As well, Whitney used to have an amazing voice. By Britney standards, the song sounds ok, by Whitney, it’s awful.

So there you have it, it’s a truly awful all around song. And I’m not saying that because I’m “jealous” or a “hater,” I’m saying that because it’s true.

  • I agree with persistant cat. I love Whitney…But this song really is horrid. So since im a fan i cannot possibly be hating on her.
Also, i think drugs played a part in her voice deterioration, but i also think it is age mostly…

And Whoever said up there that mariah’s voice didnt go down hill is on drugs themselves. lol

  • I agree with Persistent Cat & Genni: We love Whitney, but the voice just ain’t there anymore. I feel so sad that her beautiful voice is gone; that song is crap, and whoever said that they wouldn’t have recognized that song as being sung by Whitney is exactly what I was thinking!

I don’t hate her, I wish her well. But I CAN call a spade a spade…the song sucks, and so does her voice. :(

  • There are a lot of older singers who still sound great because they take care of their instrument (their throat). Whitney wasn’t thinking of her vocal cords when she smoked all of that crack, which she did supposedly for years! I doubt if she will ever be able to sing the way she did back in the day now! She did her own self in!!!

  • Sorry young ‘uns. It is not because Whitney is over 40. Get real! Did you hear her try and answer questions at the end? Couldn’t even answer just when her own album was coming out- some promotion!!Her brain has gone with her voice – all up in smoke.

  • I’m sure that Whitney is well aware that her voice is not what it used to be. Hopefully, she is focusing on her sobriety first and foremost and has a positive support group surrounding her. With the help of vocal coaching and practice I think that she will regain strength in her voice. Let’s all wish her the very best.
