Today's Evil Beet Gossip

If You’re Under Thirty-Three, Just Humor Me. R.I.P.

Dan Seals, the England Dan half of England Dan and John Ford Coley, passed away from complications of lymphoma last night.  He was only sixty-one years old.

Two of the bands biggest hits were, I’d Really Like To See You Tonight and Nights Are Forever.

Sigh.  Times have changed so much since 1976.  When I’d Really Like To See You Tonight was originally released, radio stations insisted on a re-recorded version in which the scandalous line “I’m not talking ’bout movin’ in,” was changed to “I’m not talking ’bout a millenium.”

Spark up a doobie for me and enjoy this clip, will ya?

  • Um how old are you Wendie? This song was released 36 years ago, i doubt you really recall them in their hay day either….

    • It’s all about that perpetual 70s-80s radio play. Jesus I’m about to quote Kidd Rock here but uh, “We didn’t have no Internet.” Didn’t have no iPods er that fancy MTV around for a while, neither. So shiz like this was what we grew up on, year after year after year. Not that I mean to speak for Wendie, though I suppose I just did. Sorry, Wendie.

      • Thats exactly my point. If it was on the radio throughout the 70-80’s people in their late 20’s and early 30’s would ALSO remember. All i was saying is Wendie is acting like she is so old, you dont need to be older than 33 to know them.

  • Wendie, I lurve your work here, I’m 34, and I gotta tell you…I have NO idea what you’re talking about with this one. But sad story – curse you, lymphoma!

  • Dan Seals reminds me of my childhood. My Mom loved his music & I can still sing most of his songs. He was a good man.

    • I love that song. When I was younger, I would have it on repeat and listen to it for hours on end. RIP Mr Seals

  • Aww….This brings back lots of memories. This song was played over and over on AM radio when I was a kid. Loved it. Funny that they are playing on the Midnight Special in this clip. I loved that show. Wolfman Jack ruled Friday nights! Sorry to learn that Dan had such an awful disease. :(

  • When I was younger I always thought they were singing “I’m not talkin’ ’bout the linen…”

I was like, “Why would anyone talk about linen, anyway?”

It was only recently that I realized it was “I’m not talkin’ ’bout movin’ in…”

    *sigh*

    Sad.

    Signed,
    Your Fellow Geezer

    • I’m right there with you in the o-l-d department. That song came on every afternoon when we drove home from school in my uncle’s El Camino…jammin’ to the AM radio. :)

    • Ditto. I had no idea what they were talking bout so I simply focused on the chorus. I do enjoy this song though.

  • That song is a classic! And it stands up to the test of time.

RIP Dan Seals. Thanks for the memories.

This post was an-off-the-beaten-track good call Wendie.

  • How sad… I had not read anywhere online yet that he had died.

Living in Dallas there has always been lots of radio play for his music for decades. We have always had popular adult contemporary stations here that will always play the great music of the 70’s & 80’s…

All the crappy pop music nowadays will never be even worth listening to in 10 years. Hell I don’t even like it now. haha!

I feel so old. I hate Top 40 radio. What happen… I loved it till around 2001. And now its filled with one hit wonders.

  • Wow, that really sucks… I’m twenty-four, and this kind of music is pretty much all I listen to (sixties/seventies pop/rock). Even the greats have to fall though, huh? You know what else sucks? At the beginning of the month, it was the anniversary of Brad Delp’s suicide. :( Another great musician that burned out too soon.

  • Ditto the duffer status.. and remember ‘It’s Sad To Belong’? That one used to make me cry and I wasn’t even old enough to date quite yet. They were the coolest, mellowest band I ever listened to. I wore out many of their records. Sniff, sniff.

  • I totally thought it was “talkin’ ’bout the linen” too. I figured it was a reference to going to bed together. Love that song.

  • I’ll never forget Samuel L. Jackson singing this (with the wrong words of “I’m not talkin bout the linen…) in The Long Kiss Goodnight with Geena Davis. Great song, great movie…Long live good music and musicians.
