Oscar Nominations!

You can read the full list and vote on your favorites here, at Film.com.

Basically, Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button were the big names, and Heath Ledger scored a Best Supporting nod for his Dark Knight performance (on the anniversary of his death), although The Dark Knight was not nominated for Best Picture.

  • DOUBT: Best supporting actress (x2), Best supporting actor, Best actress, Best screen play
SLUMDOG: Best picture, Best cinamatography, Best screen play, Best director, Best editing

I didnt count music in there but based on this id say that doubt was a bigger (or the same) winner as slumdog. i mean sure it didnt get best picture which is the biggest one but it did get best screen play and the acting in slumdog wasnt nominated for anything.

In my opinion you can have the best editing, cinamatography and directing but the acting is the main part. I havent seen either of these movies but if i had to choose one right now id choose the one that got best screen play AND many best acting, over the one that go best picture but not even one nomination for acting.

    • ALSO i think its stupid to put slumdog in the same category as Benjamin Button which is nominated for actor, supporting actress, director, screenplay, art, cinamatography, costume, editing, make up, effects, sound and music.

Not even on the same level of nominations.

    • I never said they were. i said if i had to choose one to watch i would pick the one with best screenplay and acting. i never said anything about confidence about which is better. please read, its easy.

i was just saying beet said slumdog was one of the big names, which it was but only if you discount acting. which i think is a big part.

      • don’t you think maybe it has just a little to do with the fact that none of the actors in slumdog are superfamous hollywood-types? the academy awards are a big club, reluctant to accept new, lesser-known members.

      • No i dont think so. I certainly didnt think ellen page, ruby dee, or amy ryan (who were nominated last year) were “superfamous hollywood-types”. Do you?

  • I’m surprised that Benjamin Button got so many nominations. I was far from impressed by it. Nominated for best editing and best picture? That’s a joke.

  • Here’s my predictions — they’re not worth much, but take a look anyways:

Best pic: Slumdog. I think the Academy is due to pick a feel-good movie, and with things being the way they are with the economy and all, this one is ideal for the current times.
    – Second choice would be Button. I haven’t seen this one, so I can’t explain why I’m picking it for second.

Best actor: I’m going with Sean Penn. I think the whole gay angle is always a big thing with the Hollywoodsters, and with the resentment of Prop. 8 passing, this will be they’re way of making a statement about it all.

Best actress: This is tough one, but I’m going with Kate Winslet. I have some reservations due to the character she’s playing, so this is just a hunch, but I think the Academy likes her a lot. I think Streep has gotten too many already, I’ve heard Jolie’s performance was just a bit too over-the-top. Melissa Leo — nobody saw that movie. Anne Hathaway — too pretty and too popular.

Best supporting actor: I definitely have to go with Heath Ledger. The Academy’s way overdue for forking over a posthumous award. Plus, he was awesome in this role — one of the best villains to cross the screen in some time. RDJ: No way. Even though most of us understand the character he played, the Academy will still have apprehensions about the whole PC thing involved with him playing a black guy.

Best supporting actress: This is one’s hard, too. I didn’t see Doubt, but I heard that Viola Davis’s short performance is outstanding. I’ll go with her.

  • Didn’t see them all but Sean Penn was excellent in Milk. Definitely not Jolie for the Changeling, nothing special (her acting) and her big red lips were so distracting.

  • Dark Knight should be nominated and win Best Movie. That is why I hate the Oscars because they always leave out the best movies.

  • YES YES YES HEATH WAS NOMINATED YES YES YES.
Though why TDK was slighted in the best film nominations, I do not know. No es justo!
But at least Heath was nominated.
    I hope he wins.
    Rest in peace, man.

  • What , no nominations for Michael Moore? I guess fake documentaries don’t carry the same weight that they used to

  • You didn’t say much today about this being the one year anniversary of Heath Ledger’s death….

  • Where’s Burn After Reading???

And, besides, it’s awesome, best Foreign picture REVANCHE, I used to work with the leading actress as her agent, yay for me :-)
