Here’s the deal:  I never liked Uggs.  I didn’t own a pashmina.  Skinny jeans and Ed Hardy tees weren’t ever my thing.  I don’t do Kabbalah and I haven’t had twins.  Even growing up, everyone was wearing neon Champion sweatshirts with matching Reebok high-tops and I was all about the feathers on a roach clip worn in my hair.  They wore Z. Cavariccis, I wore Jordache.  For chrissakes, I was passionately in love with Barry Gibb…in, like, 1987.  And today.  I just don’t fit in…never did.

To further illustrate my social ineptness, I think back to the pioneers of music.  I didn’t love them all but they made a difference.  Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Stones.  Who am I forgetting? I’m sure many great artists.  Oh, Duran Duran…total pioneers.  But I watch Miley Cyrus and I just Do.  Not.  Get.  It.  She is the colonic of the pop world…everybody thinks she’s great and I just remain confused as to her purpose.

  • i must disagree.
    while i constantly hear bashing on miley and play along, i think differently.
    to be as successful as her, you need immense dedication and passion, whihc she must have. i have alot of respect for her and her career.

  • OK I have a couple comments:
    1. Yeah this video is pretty terrible. I’m going to make an educated guess and say she probably came across better when she was wearing mini-skirts and sneakers like a kid, not stumbling around the stage pretending to be a 28-year old cokehead. Stick with what you know, girl.
    2. I think the worse her pitch gets, the stronger her Southern accent becomes. It’s like she’s using it to disguise the actual sound of her singing voice. Probably not on purpose, but she’s still doing it.

  • Y’know what I think? I think Miley Cyrus is a highly intelligent, deep, insightful, talented young lady, that’s completely aware of modern society. I bet she has written many songs better than Shakespeare, but she knows the world is not mature or ready enough for it. She knows what people want, so she spoon feeds them it, and capitalizes on their shallow stupidity.

    To be where she is today just goes to show she has the dedication, intelligence and motivation that others with the exact same talent (which isn’t much) lack.

    I think people like you have this sort of bent up anger about people like Miley Cyrus abusing humanities stupidity, and you use this site as an outlet to vent the anger caused from the injustices of her becoming famous off doing absolutely nothing constructive.

    That’s what I think.

  • I completely agree, Wendie, I don’t get the Miley thing, either, not at ALL, nor the Jonas Brothers while we’re on the topic of child Disney singing stars. And Ariana, “stumbling around the stage pretending to be a 28-year old cokehead,” I loved that! Great comment! Fucking hilarious, that was a spot-on description of Miley Cyrus performing.

    But Wendie, I have to know, did you rock the elf boots with your Jordache jeans? The ones that came in tan or black…

  • Miley annoys me no end, but I do respect her for at least singing live – bless Britney but her lip syncing was so painfully obvious.
    I hate to say it but this was probably the better performace of the night between those two.

  • She is huge cause daddy pimped her out and sold her soul to the disney devil! Jeeeez. I am so sick of her. You can tell she is another Britney by the way she smacks her gum. And letting her date a 20 year old? I would beat his azz down with her guitar. I used to think she was great and bought into that shit for my kid. Until the almost naked pics and older boyfriend forced me to explain to my 11 year old what a skank is……

  • Yes she sucks. Yes shes got to talent, and another Disney star trying to make it. Nothing special at all. Shes getting on my nerves.

    As for her dedication and passion towards her career? Bullshit. When youre thrust into the spotlight by your parents and your tv show, thats what you do.

  • I love Miley. I think she’s doing really well for someone so young. I have a lot of respect for her. And she may not be an amazing singer like Christina or Whitney, but neither was Britney, and look how far she’s gotten. And I know people didn’t understand their appeal back then either.

    But, on a side note, I absolutely can’t stand the Jonas Brothers and tons of people love them. So I say you’re all entitled to your opinons, and I won’t bitch. :)

  • Ugh…I’m ashamed to say it but: I like Miley Cyrus. I think she has a lot of talent. (Not taking into account Hannah Montana, of course)

    She kinda has a Stevie Nicks sounding voice.

  • @Ariana: That’s the first thing I noticed, how strong her accent was on this song. And I’ll throw my vote in – she bugs the crap out of me for some reason. I try to like her but then I’m all “eh” and I give up.

    P.S. I had the tan elf boots with the skinny jeans!!! I loved those boots. What about Chemindefers, Dittos and Luv-Its jeans?? Anyone? Holla 1982!

  • i’m sorry, but i think she is completely talentless. i had a friend who took voice lessons from miley’s voice coach, and even the voice coach was like, miley’s a sweet girl, but she cannot sing. what happened to music where people could actually sing without the help of computers?

    incidentally, i’m 15, so it’s not like i’m an old fart (BEET! lol) shooting my mouth off about young people.

  • I don’t get music of today in general. PERIOD.

    I agree with you…music (in N. America) ever since it started was sheer brilliance till it hit the 80’s. OK OK……I’ll be nice…till it hit the 90’s. I didn’t like the 80’s but there was some AWESOME fucking rock during that time.

    So my point? It’s just gone completely downhill ever since then. Even the artist I like, I don’t really like. There is some indie rock, some underground music that’s kind of cool, and that still moves me, but I don’t think there’s anything today that’s the brilliance that is was way back when. When I listen to classics like the jazz that was Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong, or later on with the Archies, then the Beatles…or the Beegess….whatever song you think about it that we’re still listening too today, there’s a REASON why they’ve survived through the decades.

    Can you really really really imagine these little girls and boys in their 50’s+ listening to…I don’t know…Miley, Jonas, Britney, Christina, Kate, T-Pain, Soulja Boy or even Eminem or ANYTHING of the stuff that’s been popular in the past 20 years (and today) and going, “Oh yes, back in my day, this was music…Not that garbage that you listen to nowadays”.

    ..Seriously? I think not.

    I think that music before it was raped by the industry, used to be catch, and wholesome, and fun. It was about making people happy and dancing. Then it was about transmitting a message whether it was one of peace, anger, or movement. Nowadays? It’s about putting your shit “to the left to the left” because you just don’t “rub me the right way” like the genie that I am, so maybe I’ll go “kiss a girl” and like it, or go suck on a lollipop and look like either a whore or a person who hasn’t showered in days, and bitch about how no one understands me with the WEIRDEST freaking band name. Screw if you sing well. Screw if you actually have talent and transmit a message. That shit doesn’t sell. SELL TO THE MASSES.

    Music is dead.

    Miley has a manager, and a publicist, and god knows what else to support her and her ‘image’. she’s not doing all that herself.

  • I really think it just comes down to taste. IMO she’s a performer before she’s a singer (though I do enjoy her voice, I’m a little sick of everyone in the business just trying to see who can sing the highest note) like Britney is, and I enjoy her performances. She’s confident and charismatic, and has great stage-presence, even if you think she’s is just “tumbling around the stage pretending to be a 28-year old cokehead.” She’s just a really entertaining, cool kid. So like what you like and don’t hate on others for having different tastes, please.
