Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Celebs: They’re Just Like Us!

They step outside for a cigarette even though it’s freezing cold!

Actually, this celeb is NOT like me anymore!!! I’m over THREE MONTHS smoke-free, bitches!!! It was actually way harder not to smoke during my trip to LA. I think it’s because I’m now used to driving the streets of Seattle without a cigarette hanging out of my window, but I still associated LA driving with smoking. Combine that with the stress levels of going back to my old home and seeing people (and guys I used to date) for the first time in ages, people who I was very close to and then left rather suddenly and without much explanation and who still resent me a little for that, and, just, UGH. Let’s just say it’s a damn miracle I didn’t smoke. But I didn’t!

And now that my lungs are pretty much back to normal capacity, I’m doing something previously unthinkable. I am training for a half-marathon. Yeah, that’s right, me. Running 13.1 miles. Me. I still don’t completely believe I can do it, but I’m doing everything the damn training schedule says and I’m just going to trust that it’ll work. I’m running the Rock & Roll half-marathon in Arizona in January along with a group of my girlfriends from high school and college. I’m excited and nervous and kind of amazed at myself that I’m even willing to ATTEMPT something like this. Like, before, if my friends had been like, “Hey, you wanna train for a half-marathon with us?” I would have spit out my vodka so hard it would have drenched my cigarette. But today? Today, I’m like, “Yeah, sure, I’ll give it a go.” In. Sanity. But I’m psyched about it.

Anyway, here’s Lily outside the GQ party in London.

  • You didn’t mention her lipstick.

Congrats on the not smoking… it’s been over a year for me after 22 years of smoking pretty heavily. I’m proud of me and I can smell things again and I don’t coat my food in a solid layer of salt.

    It’s SO worth it :)

  • By far the best part of that was “I would have spit out my vodka so hard it would have drenched my cigarette.” Oh, how I wish we could have a night on the town. Complete shit show, I’m sure.

  • whisper, i think her lipstick color is cute! it brings a splash of color to her all black ensemble. she looks adorable in this picture, like she always does. i don’t know why, but i’m just unusually fond of lily.. and does she look thinner? or is it just the pose?

  • She’s so cute, I just love Lily Allen. Something about her seems so cool and endearing to me. She seems like she’d be someone who’s a lot of fun to kick it with.

  • Beet we are so alike that some days it’s eerie. I am also training for the Rock and Roll Marathon, except the one I’m going to is in Virginia Beach. I’ve already quit smoking and I’ve been jogging every evening after work. I am so stoked to be doing this marathon, something I never thought I would ever do, and I know you are too!!

  • beet – good job on not smoking. i know how tough it is (i quit 8 years ago) but it gets much easier as time goes on. i think lily looks adorable here…except for the cig.

  • English girls do it aaaaaaall the time – I never wear coats to clubs because I don’t want to pay for the cloakroom!

  • beet, who talked you into this marathon business? i fear it could be some kind of plot to kill you!

all kidding aside, good job on the smoking and changing your life stuff. usually people move from seattle to LA to do that, but whatever!

  • Congrats beet! But be careful b/c the third month is the hardest. Once you get through the third month the it’s way easy! Stick to it! I’ve been cigarette free since Easter!

  • Good for you, Beet! :-) Way to go! Nicotine withdrawal just takes three days, but the psychological side of quitting smoking is the part that takes the longterm willpower. You deserve to be proud of yourself.

  • GO BEET, GO! GO BEET, GO!

I’ve been 5 years non-smoking (thank-u-Zyban!), and being able to run w/o hurling a lung is the best part, so GREAT 4 U!

future perks: food will taste AWESOME!

plus, better skin, hair, nails, teeth…you’ve pretty much saved your looks from hittin’ the wall prematurely, so , you go girl!

  • I’m 1 year smoke free as of Oct. 1st :o) (25 yr smoker) yea all of us.

BEET: WHY DID YOU LEAVE LA SO ABRUPTLY???

I’ve seen you reference the haste with which you left several times. WHAT GIVES???

  • wow, good for you, you wonderful beet!!! way to change your life for the better!! you are-dare i say it-an inspiration!

  • I love Lily. I just think she’s precious.

I smoke… but I support your decision to quit :) Way to go and good luck on the running
