Hacking Just Ain’t What It Used to Be

Meet David Kernell, the 20-year-old University of Tennessee student who’s probably going to jail for a very long time for “hacking” into the Yahoo email account of Sarah Palin by correctly guessing her security questions with information he gleaned from her Wikipedia page.

OMG.

I’m sorry, but can we please stop calling this kid a “hacker”? That’s the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard. This kid is not a hacker. I remember the Golden Age of hacking, where you actually had to know stuff about computers to be considered a hacker. Now apparently all you need is an Internet connection, a 4chan.com login and too much free time. Fucking childsplay. Hacking used to be for real, yo. But I digress.

Just to make things more fun, David’s father is a Democratic state senator in Tennessee.

The grand jury today ended its session without indicting David, but they’re totally going to eventually, and then this poor kid’s going to go to jail for a really, really long time for what basically amounts to a simple prank that any local middle-schooler could have pulled off, when really Sarah Palin should be going to jail for governing an entire state with a fucking Yahoo account. Sucks to be you, dude. (Love the chest hair, BT-dub.)

  • It’s already been said that the max this kid will do is 6 months, and it’s way more likely that it’s just a slap on the wrist, due to this being his first offense.

  • you are so right, when i heard what he did, i was like-that doesnt sound like it was too hard of a hack…i mean-he has some political influences-but its still wasnt that hard-you shouldnt go to jail for that

  • That’s so dumb.

And everyone knows gmail is where it’s at.

But shouldn’t she have like a government email?

I mean my mom has a yahoo… for her spam mail. Even she has a network email for like comcast or something

  • The definitions of “hacker” include typically “clever”, “engineer”, “programmer” and “expert” to cherry-pick a few.

“I guessed the password right the fifth time”, doesn’t demonstrate a lot of similar qualities.

  • a couple quick notes… its not “a” 4chan.org its just 4chan.org. you dont have to have a login…you can just get on it and be annom. also the guys name i believe is mike not david. and the kid was so stupid when he changed her password. he posted it on 4chan for everyone else to get on and hack… and you can no longer see the thread cuz its been deleted. to bad though. cuz it was just be fun to see.. and the only stuff that really leaked was photos…nothing to big.

  • Seems like everyone else covered the whole “.org” and “log in” thing, so I don’t really have to comment.o___o

Lots of /b/tards reading Evil Beet, I see. :p

  • Letters, numbers, org, login, blah, blah, blah. Back to the runt above.

His chest hair is HAWT. Makes me want to turn in my 6′ 2″ 230 lb buff, grown man husband for this nasty little chicken wing looking geek-boy. UGH. At any rate, how bright is Palin for having that information out there? She sure will be great at keeping our country’s secrets secure if she can’t even keep her own email secure.

  • sorry your wrong. that is hacking. what he did is the definitive definition of hacking. social engineering to gain access to protected information is hacking.

  • i heard the dude also hacked obamas email, but all he found were some nude images of sidney poitier, a chicken in a sweater clip, and a receipt for the dvd collection of All in The Family.

  • 4chan is the gayest thing in the entire world. Sorry. I thought beet was just joking and making a crack at how retarded this kid is the fact that he actually uses it makes it so much worse.

  • Hey, he’s a big boy and knows breaking the law is breaking the law and he subjected his family to great humilation and shame as well as the Palins, made a fool out of YAHOO without any worries on being caught.. so nawh nawh.. I hope he likes his lonely guy vay-cay in the jail cell.

  • Umm yah beet. guessing the password to an email account isn’t hacking. no it’s supposed to be something way more cooler—something you’d see on mission impossible or james bond— requiring black suits and lasers and computer boards the size of a room– oh and guessing the passwords to hack in… im sure if you were on the other end–meaning your email account was the one hacked into and all your most likely irrelevant and silly, or possibly important, info became open to the possibility of being spread around the net—- you’d call up yahoo corporate and say—-hey that’s okay. it’s not a crime because the person who might have hacked into my account, opening me up to the possibility of IDENTITY THEFT, didn’t work TOO hard when breaching my security code. i had nothing of value in it……. hey the guy who broke into my home just guessed right which window I left open…it’s okay. i had nothign of value there anyway. state dep employees didn’t breach the safety and security of high profile presidential candidates….they just looked in the file that detailed their travel……. considering that all forms of internet crime are so simply constructed— as simple as getting your passwords right—-and that internet crime has become a problem…whether silly 20 year old pea brain or career criminal—-all forms of accessing information that doesn’t’ belong to you and you were not entrusted with have to be treated the same….as a crime.

  • this kid isn’t going to do any jail time, and he shouldn’t get any for a little prank like this. He should get stupid jail time though.. since he was lucky enough to pull it off.. but then stupid enough to get caught. What a loser.

  • i dont think he’ll be going to jail atleast not for long. i mean its not like he hacked into some important government account or anything. Its freaking Sarah Palins account! The woman is an idiot, I doubt there is anything significant or even remotely important to find in there.

  • All I can say is, ROCK ON DUDE. Yes this kid is a total idiot for doing it, but hey, lets start a f*ckin’ revolution! I am so psyched.

  • If the grand jury failed to indict on this particular offense, then the State can no longer proceed on those criminal charges. They’ll have to indict on a separate incident. It’s kinda like double jeopardy, only the case hasn’t seen the inside of a courtroom.

  • Well, since it is a personal Yahoo account, Governor Palin can avoid having messages sent to it subpoenaed, which she couldn’t do through an official government account. It’s a fairly standard political tactic. It is, however, scummy, and makes me wonder why she would feel the need to hide emails relating to the operation of the state of Alaska. Does she have something to hide?

  • Please – if the dems take the white house that kid isn’t going to see the inside of a jail. Plain and simple.

yep – she’s so worldy – got her e-mail hacked. hahaha.
    shit is hilarious.
why did he hack it from home. Everyone knows you go to the library or an internet cade or something.

this town deserves a better class of criminal.

  • as a government official she has an email site she is supposed to use for all work-related emails, but the sneaky bitch tried to go through her private email, so she deserves for that shit to be hacked. but what really makes me laugh is all the right wingers who are going batshit crazy over this, and yet they all support the patriot act, which basically eroded the average american’s right to private email, phone calls, letters, medical records, even checking out books at the damned library! they are screaming off with this guy’s head, yet they have no problem with the fact that the government can come into your home (with no search warrant), when you are not there, copy stuff off your computer, etc. and leave without legally needing to inform you of their visit. nice to see their priorities are straight.

  • I bet if this jerk had hacked Hilary or Michelle’s e mail…He would have already been tried and executed. You dish out so good,,but when the tables are turned, you just crap out…as usual.

  • I think that you should have sympathy for this man,

I myself have hacked into a facebook account and received a threat from the owner that he was gonna have me sent to jail, he even found out what my facebook account is,

so now, i feel worried about myself too.

  • To all who responded to 4chan login – Trolled.

I think we need a new article:

“Trollin’ just ain’t what it used to be”
