Lady Gaga Is Queen’s New Lead Singer?

To answer the question posed in the headline, yes and no. “No” because nothing is official yet, but “yes” because Queen’s remaining members and perhaps Lady Gaga herself are real interested in spitting all over Freddie Mercury‘s majestic grave by getting this girl to take over. Do you feel nauseous yet? Well, hold on:

Guitarist Brian May has said that among the singers Queen’s considered to front the band, Lady Gaga is a top contender. “We get a lot of offers to work with other people,” May told Express. “I worked with Lady Gaga and she’s very creative and is someone we’ve talked about singing, fronting the band with. She’s not just a singer, she writes her own material.”And apparently Gaga is into the idea, as May noted that she confirmed “she would like to do something with us.”

I swear, if this means that Gaga will be doing classic Queen songs, I will die. I will lay down and die. If I hear Lady Gaga sing a single line from “Somebody to Love” I will cease to exist.

Do you think Lady Gaga could handle this gig? Or, more importantly, do you think anyone could even come close to filling Freddie Mercury’s shoes?

  • I believe her stage name is a direct reference to Queen’s song ‘Radio Ga Ga’, and she adopted it as a sort of homage to Freddie Mercury and Queen, so with that in mind I can see how they got there. BUT, no one can take on Freddie Mercury and win. I don’t think it would work even with someone like David Bowie (but wouldn’t that be at least more interesting?), just like I don’t think you could have a Freddie Mercury performing David Bowie’s songs and make it work. But if they want to continue performing as Queen, I think Lady Gaga is in a very small group of people who could at least do it justice. I suspect it would hurt her career because it would just remind everyone of how much Freddie Mercury owned those songs. I suppose I should qualify this by letting you know that I’m the (apparently) only Evilbeet reader who actually likes Lady Gaga a lot.

    • Nope, I like Gaga a lot, too. And girlfriend can SING, so I’m not totally hating this idea. But no, she can’t compare to Freddie Mercury.

  • Lady Gaga rarely seems to show the full scale of her vocal talents. Certainly not on her pop music. I did hear her do a duet with Tony Bennett, and was amazed at how much she usually holds back. I’m not saying she’s Freddy’s equal, but I would like to see her give a couple of his numbers a try before condemning her.
