The Winners of the “Life and Times of Tim” Contest

This was one of my favorite contests ever to read the responses for. The contest was to help promote the new HBO series, "The Life and Times of Tim," a cartoon series about a young man who always seems to find himself in awkward situations. I asked you guys to email me with the most awkward situations you've ever been in, and you did not disappoint me. And, listen, choosing the two runners-up was a very difficult task, but choosing the winner was quite easy. Congratulations to Anthony E.,...

Who Wants to See All the Emmy Dresses????

They're all here! What interests me about the Emmys is that the attendees -- at least this year -- tended to be, on the whole, comparatively older women, which is fine, but their fashion choices are more reserved and therefore less interesting. I wasn't really wowed by anyone. One thing I did notice was poor Jenna Fischer, who has yet to look good on a red carpet, in my opinion. I think the unglamorous, girl-next-door look that works so well for her character on The Office makes her a poo...

The End of Wall Street As We Know It

On Sunday, the Federal Reserve quietly announced the conversion of Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to bank holding companies. They'd previously been the last two independent investment banks in the country. This means these companies are now subject to far stricter federal oversight. The Wall Street Journal says the move will "effectively mark the end of Wall Street as it has been known for decades." But, ya know, hopefully it also means the US economy won't completely collapse, a...

More Updates on the DJ AM/Travis Barker Plane Crash

First off, rumors that they were on that Learjet so that Travis' assistant could be present for the birth of his child are false. Says a publicist for the duo in a statement: "Both Travis Barker and Adam Goldstein (DJ AM) are in critical but stable condition and are being treated at Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia after surviving a plane crash late last night in Columbia, South Carolina. The hospital will issue a statement with an update on their condition at 9:00 am eastern time tomorrow. Due to the nature of the injuries and the evolving course of treatment no further information on their condition is available at this time. The accident claimed the lives of four people on board, two of whom, Chris Baker (Lil Chris) and Charles Stills (Che), were close friends of the injured. On behalf of Travis Barker and DJ AM, deepest sympathy is expressed to the loved ones of all who perished in the crash. As the two recuperate and mourn this loss, privacy for them, their families, and friends is requested at this time." This is all so awful. Somehow I just can't bring myself to post the latest photos from the Emmy swag lounges and write pithy comments about them in the face of shit like this. It's never fun to be reminded how suddenly your whole life can be turned upside-down through no fault of your own. Things'll be back to normal by tomorrow night, I suppose. But summer ended in Seattle today, and it's dark, cold and rainy and something's changed tangibly, and all I want to do tonight is curl up in bed with my puppy and my cats. />First off, rumors that they were on that Learjet so that Travis' assistant could be present for the birth of his child are false. DJ AM and Travis Barker in Serious Condition After Plane Crash

Holy shit. DJ AM and Travis Barker appear to be the sole survivors of a plane crash in South Carolina late last night. They are both in critical condition at a South Carolina hospital. Officials said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane hurtled off the end of a runway and crashed through antennas and a fence. It came to rest on an embankment across a five-lane highway and was engulfed in flames, said Debbie Hersman, a member of the National Tran...

Wanna Hear the New Bond Theme? (Hint: You Don’t)

It's called "Another Way to Die." It was written and produced by Jack White, and performed by Jack White and Alicia Keys, after studio execs realized that Amy Winehouse was, essentially, unemployable. It's ... um ... weird. And by "weird" I mean it still probably would have been better if Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse had done it, even if Amy had smoked, like, a mattress full of crack beforehand. In fact, I kind of feel cracked out just listening to it. It's unsettling. It makes me want to twitch and rearrange furniture and then scratch at my face a lot. Listen here. />It's called "Another Way to Die."
