Today's Evil Beet Gossip

R.I.P. Mary Travers

I feel like my childhood is dying off, one icon at a time.

Yesterday, Mary Travers, one-third of the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, died of leukemia.  She was 72.

Peter, Paul & Mary were one of the best-known, peace-loving, anti-war folk acts of the 1960’s.  They openly protested the Vietnam war and performed at the 1963 march on Washington in support of civil rights.  The group split in 1971 but came back together for various political events such as the Democratic National Convention in 2004.

Travers is survived by her husband Ethan, two daughters and two granddaughters.

  • I remember seeing Peter,Paul & Mary at Dance Party on Van ness Ave in San Francisco., when they were just getting started in the early 60’s,I also saw Wayne Newton the very same day. Does anybody remeber that are being there? P.P. & M. were great Folk song singers.

  • Vale to a beautiful and classy lady. I listen to Peter Paul and Mary a lot and have all their vinyl. Thanks for the songs.

  • My brother had the album where their names are written in chalk on a brick wall behind them, and I played that album a bazillion times.
The song about the young woman who dresses in a man’s uniform to join her beloved (I guess it would have been the Civil War?) used to slay me.
    Very sad news today…

  • Nooo!!!!

I’ve been neglecting my daily beet and only caught up to this post today. ):

My boyfriend and I were rearranging my cd collection this morning and I was ranting to him about how awesome Peter Paul and Mary were. Are. Were. Sniff.

    I’m sad now.
