How Is Amy Winehouse Not Dead Yet?

I’m serious. Every time I read a new story about this girl and the headline isn’t “Amy Winehouse Dead,” I’m a little bit shocked. There is no viable reason for her to still be alive. She is so mind-blowingly cracked out at all times. It’s strange — I lost a friend to a drug overdose a few weeks ago. He was 20 years old. He accidentally overdosed on prescription drugs. He was a strong, healthy guy — a college athlete, no pre-existing health problems. I still don’t think it’s really sunk in for me that he’s gone forever. And, yet, at the age of 25, Amy Winehouse continues to stick the crack pipe in her mouth every day and live to tell about it. Why do some people seem to survive drug abuse indefinitely, while others lose the battle early on? I guess the moral is this: Don’t do drugs. Don’t do them ever. And if you find yourself hooked, get help immediately. Don’t wait another day.

But fans in London will have to wait for another day to see Amy Winehouse perform — she’s suddenly pulled out of what was going to be her first UK performance in over a year.

“Amy Winehouse’s management has regretfully announced that Amy and her band will no longer be performing at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire,” her rep said in a statement.

“Amy would like to apologize to her fans who bought tickets for the shows.”

No reason was given for the cancellation, though yesterday Britain’s Press Association reported that Winehouse was taken to the hospital with chest pains.

While her hospitalization came in the wake of a fainting spell, the singer’s management claimed she was simply dehydrated and released shortly thereafter.

It’s the second time this month the singer’s rep has blamed a fainting spell for a doctor’s visit. It’s also the second time this month that the Grammy winner has backed out of a performance.

Who are these fans buying tickets for her show? It’s probably 100% paparazzi, looking to capture the trainwreck on camera. I have trouble believing that anyone today would be a ticket for an Amy Winehouse show and expect a good performance.

Meanwhile, Amy is being followed around by cameras for a documentary about her life titled Saving Amy. “Amy and her family will be the subject of a new documentary later this year,” said an announcement from Amy’s camp. “The journalist spent time with Amy and her family recently on St. Lucia, and in true honest to goodness Amy style, the doc will be a truthful and revealing look at her complicated lifestyle.”

Um, I don’t think her lifestyle is complicated. It goes like this: Drugs –> Hospital –> Drugs –> Hospital –> Drugs –> Hospital. What part of this is failing to register with her?

  • Amy Winehouse is not dead yet because Hell is afraid her presence will cause all the inmates to have a horrific relapse, undoing thousands of years of rehabilitation.

  • I totally understand how you feel, Beet.
It’s been almost 8 years since a very beloved friend of mine died of an overdose. He was an occasional drug user and a totally wonderful person who dedicated himself to helping homeless youth.
It’s almost a personal affront to see Amy Winehouse still stumbling around burning herself and canceling concerts.

  • I don’t understand why people aren’t doing more to help? I mean yes there is a line as to how far you can help, but it looks like no one is doing anything. Suppose you don’t know whats going on behind closed doors though.

  • So sad to hear about the passing of your friend, Beet. Horrible stuff! I can’t stand hearing about the Amy train wreck – it’s awful to watch from afar. I couldn’t imagine being her parents right now.

    • You can’t stand hearing about, Amy, the train wreck? But you’re watching what she does! That, doesn’t make any sense! It’s like Cat Face, says suppose you don’t know what goes on behind close doors! The idea that anyone would ask, why isn’t she dead yet, sounds just as sick as, the people who are curious, as to why she isn’t. Have you’re heads checked, for bugs, in you’re brains, please………………

  • How is she not dead? God only knows. The bigger question I ask myself is why promoters continue to contract with her, and like you said, who buys tickets to her events? And then I realize that everyone wants to be able to claim the last appearance before she tragically OD’d at age ___. Everything about Amy Winehouse and the people around her is sick and exploitative.

  • Is the boobs on her tattoo sagging because it’s drawn that way or because her skin is so loose?

  • Then again, look at people like Jerry Garcia or Keith Richards. They did lots of drugs, probably even more than Amy and lived to tell the tale. Obviously JG is dead now in a semi drug related episode but he was way older than Amy. She’s got a few more years of sucking that crack pipe in her I reckon. Hopefully she can bang out a few more tunes along the way too.

  • How old’s the picture here?

I don’t think Amy should tour again – she should maybe live near a little jazz club and just play there unannounced whenever she feels like it.

  • Because of her fame, her struggle with substance abuse is for the world to see while so many others deal with it in relative privacy. I hope that she can find the strength to overcome this deadly way of life.

    Sorry about your friend

  • dehydrated…….yeah they’ll buy that…DeHyDraTed….It worked for Martin Lawrence

  • I LIKE MCBISCUIT, AMY, JERRY & JB MAYBE BEST OF ALL.
I DON’T KNOW IF I COULD LIVE WITH MYSELF IF I WERE AS INCREDIBLE AS AMY WINEHOUSE EITHER. SOME OF US ARE DESTINED TO DO GREAT THINGS BUT IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAY. PS BEET I’M SUPRISED I DIDN’T THINK YOU THOUGHT ALL DRUGS ARE BAD.

  • Such a waste of good talent. All that stuff she’s been taking is really taking a toll on her skin as well. She looks really old for 25. Or is it just the beehive? Gah.

  • I’m soo going to watch that documentary- it’s sad what’s happened to her- I hope she does get help and that there is never a news story titled “Amy Winehouse found dead’

  • Yes, sorry about your friend. I too wonder why she is still alive, I’m glad she is but the odds are against her being alive. I do check the Internet to see if she’s still breathing, it is not a (non caring- sick thing to do) she just is so out there, and not in a hospital where she should be, it’s crazy. Can’t her family do a 5150 hold like the Spears family did for Britney? I don’t know the laws of the UK, or ST Lucia. I hope she can get better and be happy, take care of her self and put out some new music…she was so talented…but no no no concerts!

  • Her issue isn’t just substance and alcohol abuse; she is horribly anorexic and all of these are self-harming behaviours. I think that Amy Winehouse has borderline personality disorder.
