Miss Universe Finds Gitmo “Very Interesting”

dayana_mendoza

Tee hee. The girls over at XX Factor opened my eyes to this recent post from the blog of Dayana Mendoza, the reigning Miss Universe. Granted, Dayana’s from Venezuela, and English isn’t her primary language, so I’m going to go easy on that aspect of it, but LOOK how much FUN it is to be at Guantanamo Bay!

This week, Guantanamo!!! It was an incredible experience.
We arrived in Gitmo on Friday and stared going around the town, everybody knew Crystle and I were coming so the first thing we did was attend a big lunch and then we visited one of the bars they have in the base. We talked about Gitmo and what is was like living there. The next days we had a wonderful time, this truly was a memorable trip! We hung out with the guys from the East Coast and they showed us the boat inside and out, how they work and what they do, we took a ride around the land and it was a loooot of fun!
We also met the Military dogs, and they did a very nice demonstration of their skills. All the guys from the Army were amazing with us.
We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting.
We took a ride with the Marines around the land to see the division of Gitmo and Cuba while they were informed us with a little bit of history.
The water in Guantanamo Bay is soooo beautiful! It was unbelievable, we were able to enjoy it for at least an hour. We went to the glass beach, and realized the name of it comes from the little pieces of broken glass from hundred of years ago. It is pretty to see all the colors shining with the sun. That day we met a beautiful lady named Rebeca who does wonders with the glasses from the beach. She creates jewelry with it and of course I bought a necklace from her that will remind me off Guantanamo Bay :)

Hooray, Gitmo! Calm waters, cute soldiers, pretty jewelry and memories we’ll keep forever and ever. How lovely, Dayana.

  • Yeahm the only thing she missed it the prisons full of extremist murderers. Man they sure must be mistreated…

  • There is not one fucking thing wrong, inappropriate, or to be mocked about her post.

I could give a flying fuck about anybody who is inprisoned at Gitmo.

I DO care about the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine personnel she was clearly there to visit/entertain/cheer up. I thank God for them. I pray for their safety, as they put their lives in danger for mine.

    • Oh, get real.

My brother is in the army and I can still be concerned about the possibility of mistreatment at Gitmo. That doesn’t mean I care MORE about the prisoners than the soldiers, or even as MUCH about them. But it does mean that I can figure out what’s off-kilter about describing a prison camp as a fun, glamorous vacation without once mentioning the other potential issues involved.

  • Ok. Sorry. Have to step in here. I used to live in Gtmo. I lived there for 6 years as a kid and still dream of that place (I’m almost 32 y.o.). My dad was in the Navy and we were stationed there and for years and years after we left, I wished we could go back. All of my friends I thought I’d never see again from back then, I’ve found via Myspace and Facebook and we’ve had mini reunions b/c of this rare and crazy bond we have from that place (we’ve gone to Las Vegas, Virginia Beach and another one is being planned right now). Lame to you, probably, but pretty amazing to us.
Anyway, Yes, Gtmo holds prisoners now, but back then it didn’t. It was just a tiny playground to us. As kids, it was no biggie to ride around on the base bus and explore whatever we wanted (as long as we didn’t go near the northeast gate which separates the base and the communist side of Cuba), climbing big ass hills and playing in bunkers.

The beaches were phenomenal (Glass Beach, omg!!) and all of our parents would go diving while we’d chill out on the beaches all day long.

I have a friend whose parents have lived there off an on for years and he has been able to go back every few years. He’s been lucky to back as a teenager and an adult. And he says it’s still beautiful. Granted, a lot of our old neighborhoods are ghost towns now, but he says it’s still pretty amazing if you know where to go and look.

I have come across a lot of people who have been stationed there recently and to them, it isn’t the playground that I remember. They are lonely and have nothing else to do besides go to a bar and drink. So I think it’s pretty cool that this chick went over there and spent a bit of time.

Ok. I’m done with my rant. But Gtmo will always hold a special place in my heart and even my parents hearts. So please don’t bash me!

  • “Yeahm the only thing she missed it the prisons full of extremist murderers.”

Only….. not so much. Read the newspapers. Turns out we were grabbing people on the flimsiest of evidence (and sometimes no evidence at all) and disappearing their asses into Gitmo and other secret sites. Torturing them. It’s disgusting, and those responsible should be hauled into court. Dick Cheney, I’m looking at you.

  • I wonder if the dog demonstration included biting the genitals of people arrested without charge.

  • dumb, dumb Dayana Mendoza. Miss Stupid Of the Universe Model. What would she had said if her family members were suffering in this hellhole.
