Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Is No One Else Releasing Movies Right Now?

Inexplicably, Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn’s Four Christmases was at the top of the box office this weekend, bringing in $31.7M.

Twilight, on the other hand, saw a 62% drop in ticket sales since last weekend. I guess it’s not really a family film.

The much-hyped Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackson, opened this weekend in fifth place with only $14.8M in sales, which is even worse when you consider that the thing cost $130M to make. Um, how do you say “humiliating” in Australian?

Milk, although it only opened at 36 theaters, played almost entirely to packed houses, bringing in a $38,375 per-screen average. For comparison, Christmases brought in only $9,500 per screen. Not too shabby.

  • If its worth anything, most Australians are cringing over that film. Honestly, its so filled with cringeworthy cliches (really, truly, NOBODY says crikey, unless they’re trying to be ironic..) We all hoped that a film like this would actually show what the REAL Australia is like, but yeah, I think its done just as much damage as Crocodile Dundee or Steve Irwin to our national image.

  • Really Emily is it like that? I haven’t seen it yet. They say crikey?? I am pretty sure I have never seriously said the word Crikey in my life.

Oh and you say humiliating in Australian like this “Nicole Kidman” seriously, i think more people would have gone to see it if she wasn’t the leading lady, she is just so unlikeable!

  • @Liberty: Milk is a white fluid secreted by the mammary glands of female mammals for the nourishment of their young. It does a body good.

Oh… and also, it’s a movie about the late Harvey Milk starring Sean Penn. He was the first openly gay politician in the US and was shot with SF Mayor Moscone by Dan White – known for giving the famous twinkie defense (too much sugar caused him to shoot everyone). Diane Feinstein began her rise to power that day when she took over for Mayor Moscone and announced to everyone what happened. I remember all this as a kid… it all happened the same week that Jim Jones killed everyone with the cyanide poison in Jamestown, Guyanna.

  • i LOVED AUSTRALIA! not sure where u other guys from oz hang but iv heard plenty a man say crickey and all the othe expletives used! i do think nicole kidman is a tool but hey the movie was enjoyable and the fact someone made a movie about our country for a change was very enjoyable!

  • down unda is better than google!!!
and emily, you guys thought it would show the “real” australia? did you guys see moulin rouge? french people were disappointed because it didn’t show the real paris nightlife. . .

  • This Reese/Vince movie looks like a piece of crap, but then again, I despise Vince and she is way too good to be in a movie with him. Not a chance in hell would I see this movie.
