Alicia Keys Puts the Kibosh on Smoking Ads at Her Concerts

A cigarette brand has withdrawn their promotional activities at an Alicia Keys concert in Indonesia, after the singer protested their involvement.

A Mild cigarettes, which are made by Philip Morris International, were sponsors of her show in Jakarta. When Alicia learned of this, she requested that the company withdraw their sponsorship.

“I am an unyielding advocate for the well-being of children around the world and do not condone or endorse smoking,” she said.

The company obliged, saying “Whether tobacco sponsorship of music events leads to youth smoking is a matter of serious debate. Having considered the facts in this specific instance, we have decided to withdraw all branding associated with this concert.”

And speaking of smoking — I have had a lot of false starts and stops, but I’m currently going on day five smoke-free! It’s the farthest I’ve gotten with non-smoking in awhile, so I’m hopeful. Plus, my mom is coming to visit on Friday, and there’s no way I’m going to start smoking again with her here (she’ll kill me much faster than the tar ever would), so I figure I’ll get at least a week and a half under my belt by the time she leaves. And that’s a LONG time without a cigarette when you’re basically a lifelong smoker like me. Keep your fingers crossed! (Oh, and I have to give a shout-out to my grandfather, who has relentlessly been shipping me packages with quit-smoking materials, like twice a week since he called me to announce himself as my “quitting buddy,” even though he’s never smoked in his life. I love you, Grandpa!!!)

  • Oh Beet! :-( Not only will it kill ya, but smoking makes you wrinkly and dried out looking… AND smokers always have that awful stale smoke smell coming out of their pores and hair… Ewwww. :-(

You smokers must be millionaires… I couldn’t afford to smoke even if I wanted to!

Besides, when they started passing laws about smoking in bars I thought it would be great. Little did I know that I apparently ceded the outdoors to smokers any and all chance of enjoying some fresh smokefree air. :-( Grrrr.

P.S. I’m no style guru, but Alicia looks hot from the waist up in that dress and crappy from the waist down. I know there’s got to be some sort of female tricks she can pull to dress that area up isn’t there?!

  • Wow Alicia looks awful. She needs to take a look in the mirror and remember what body type she has. Something that will emphasize her Jlo booty and not draw too much attention to her thighs. And I hate her shoes with a passion.

  • Good for you Beet! It took me years to finally quit and I still think about smoking 50 million times a day and I haven’t had one since May 2000. You know what did it for me? Bubbles. Blow bubbles endlessly. (Soap not gum). It is the same hand to mouth motion + you see the product of exhaling – but instead of toxic smoke circling your head you’ll be surrounded by shimmering bubbles. Try it! xo

  • HYPNOSIS!!! I started smoking before I even had my period. Eighteen years later, I smoked 3 in like 5 seconds before I went up for my therapy, and walked out an hour later feeling like I hadn’t smoked in 10 years. I still have not even had the desire to smoke.

  • Your grandfather is adorable- it’s so sweet that he’s still all about being your quitting buddy.

I am rooting for you to quit! (although it’s partially self-serving…my asthma makes it pretty much impossible to be anywhere near smokers, so the less of them there are, the more places I can go and continue breathing!)

  • good job on the smoking – u can do it. Gotta love gramps! :)

Alicia looks awful, the dress, the shoes. At least she has a pretty face.

  • just wanted to say congrats on the smoking thing! i smoked for 6 years but then when i decided to quit i read a book called “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking” by Allen Carr. It was a miracle book! The day I finished reading it I had my last ciggarette and I havent so much as touched or puffed on one since! Havent had the urge except for the first 5-7 days. It was amazing and I feel great, also didnt gain any weight. Look into it if you need to.

  • i started smoking when i was 15 (i still am)
well my grandma was in the hospital
    she was a smoker.
and i always liked the smell of them
    but when she died
i would smoke like a pack every 3 days.
    and that was last year.
but this year on May 7 (the anniversary of her death)
    i smoked my last 5.

havent even really thought about it.
so im done with that shit.
but i can walk upstairs without losing my breath.

  • Best of luck, Beet. With that grandpa on your side, you can do it!

Am I the only one who thinks that there is nothing wrong with how Alicia looks, except for the fugly shoes?

  • @ BettyCrockerPunkRocker: I’m with you… I think she looks HOTTT (but maybe that’s because I have the opposite figure of her — skinny w/ small hips and big boobs).

  • Well, as you know, smoking results in weight loss, and looking at those hips on her…Jesus, you can see her nips right through that dress! Awesome…you go girl! (Yes, I know saying, “You go girl” is so 20 min. ago.)

  • Those of you who say Alicia looks awful need glasses or something! She is absolutely gorgeous! I love a woman who LOOKS like a woman and not a skeleton. She has curves and hips and booty-it’s all good!!

  • hey there if you need help quitting the ciggy I totally sugest the Chantix pill. i know, i know some people went nuts and shot at each-other but that is not the norm and they were drinking way too much on the pill….

i am almost 6 months with out a cigg after 13 years of at least a pack a day!!! !!!! i still can’t believe it!

good luck! (if you are interested in the pill talk to your dr. it’s prescription only… )

  • I think Alicia looks GREAT! to all those who think otherwise…you’ve obviously been brainwashed into thinking that waif thin and zero curves=beautiful. i wish i had curves, like a REAL woman! Best of luck Beet! i work in tobacco control, so i really applaud your readiness to quit and your positive attitude about it! and your grandpa is great!
