Christie Brinkley’s On My Side

Alexa Ray Joel and Christie Brinkley

Earlier this year, Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley’s daughter Alexa Ray Joel was rushed to the hospital after a break-up caused her to take a fist full of pills. Alexa survived the OD and I immediately found myself turned off by the incident. Here is a girl with the world at her fingertips (and she didn’t even have to work for it), and she’s allowing some douchebag boyfriend drive her over the edge? What a fucking waste.

At the time I caught some flack for being insensitive, but the pain of heartbreak is no reason to be so effing dramatic. Playing with your life because someone played with your heart? Are we 12?

Well, it turns out Christie Brinkley is on my side. In a recent interview, Christie had the following to say about her daughter’s mental health:

“Your job as a parent is to listen. And to dole out as much love as you can. That includes tough love. I told Alexa, ‘You got yourself worked into such a tizzy. You need to examine that, you need to seek professional advice.’ She tried to do something dramatic to prove to her boyfriend how much he hurt her. I think many people can relate to that excruciating pain of love gone wrong. I’d rather have a broken arm than a broken heart.”

It seems that Alexa took her mom’s advice to heart and she’s even begun studying heartbreak as a medical condition (LOL– you should see what I have to say about that.) I’m glad that she had someone in her life to be honest with her. Too often celebrity children are coddled and allowed to believe that their dramatic behavior is justifiable as a result of their parents’ lifestyle. While the same can’t be said for someone like Cameron Douglas, it looks like Alexa is going to be fine.

  • That makes you both fucking idiots then. So what if she’s famous and hasn’t had to work a day for it? Heartbreak has nothing to do with money or the circumstances of her upbringing. Her mother’s words just seem like a ploy to cover Alexa’s problems up, even if she has no problems you have no right to treat suicide like a spoilt girl’s cry for help. Laughing at her recovery attempts, no matter how bizarre; people heal differently, was crude also.

      • Some of the higher risk people for suicide are young people (often teenagers) who have gone through a bad break up, and usually the attempt is not to teach someone a lesson (not that I’m saying it never is) but because they are young and they don’t know how to properly deal with the situation and they see suicide as an easy way to make the pain stop. Her being wealthy doesn’t stop her from being a human. Don’t be an asshole just because you don’t have understanding for another person’s pain. You laughing at someone’s recovery from attempted suicide and then trivializing the attempt is totally disgusting.

  • I’ll have a laugh then. Yes, heartbreak has nothing to do with money or the circumstances of upbringing, but then nor does being an idiot drama queen. This Alexa look a fistfull of “homeopathic aspirin” or some shit. Ha ha! She would have done more damage eating the chemicals in a single krispy kreme. That’s not a bloody suicide attempt, taking a bunch of sugar pills and calling an ambulance is a plea for attention full stop. To be fair, who hasn’t demanded a bunch of attention so our PAIN is acknowledged by the WORLD when we’ve just been dumped? I know I’ve been there – when I was 19.

    • Let me just say, I love how British your comment (and, presumably, you) are. I think I’m going to start saying “full stop” instead of “period” from now on.

  • haley berry tried to kill herself over heartbreak too.
i don’t think christie’s words were all that similar to yours, molls.
there’s a diffference between berating someone for feeling the way they do because you think they have no right to feel that way & telling someone they overreacted and they should get help because of it.

  • I kind of see both sides….with the exception of the mocking tone of heart break being a medical condition. There is some scientific evidence that says that could actually be quasi-true. The theory is highlighted in one of the chapters of “The Female Brain” by Louann Brizendine. I’m not a scientist, so forgive me if I use the wrong term, but basically if you cut off a chemical supply that give you pleasure (like the ones going through you while in a romantic relationship) it can cause major discomfort physically (in the book this kind of discomfort is even compared to the comfort level of having a seizure).

I’m not saying this does or does not back up why she attempted suicide, but her wanting to research it medically isn’t all that far fetched. Just sayin….

  • Alexa Ray later said she just did ’cause only the good die young. Well she must suck because she’s still alive.

  • How do you TRY to kill yourself. There is no try, you either kill yourself or you are grabbing for attention. You go Molls!

    • well, you can try and not succeed but a minor OD of herbal “aspirin” sounds more like a grab for attention not an attempted suicide. Sorry to be cynical but considering her mother’s relationship history and need to get revenge in the media, it sounds like Alexa is a big fan of emotional blackmail

  • Let’s see – you try to kill yourself by taking 99 sleeping pills, which was all you could accumulate at the time, given that you were still a kid, and it turns out to be enough to make you comatose for two days but not enough to kill you.

You try to kill yourself by pointing a gun at your face and pulling the trigger and then surviving in a mutilated state.

Was that for attention, or did you just not quite have the technique down?

Believing that someone has no right to the emotion of despair because their parents did some stuff to get attention and money before their children were born is a strangely un-compassionate judgement.

And there are loads of people who do similar “cry for help” suicide attempts by swallowing a bottle of acetaminophen thinking that it won’t kill them and then two days later they die of liver failure.

If someone gets into that state, by definition they aren’t rational, so expecting them to “do it right” and critiquing with their emotional state or their self-destroying techniques, is in itself, irrational.

  • I can competely understand what she was going through. It is devistating to be in a place emotionally that taking your life seems to be the only answer, to the stupid bitch who writes this blog…I won’t be reading it anymore, and she should be ashamed of herself.

  • Shame Christie read this to her daughter from a ‘men are rotten suckers kill them, stab them and shoot them’ blog website, gave her a thousand dollars credit at Nordstoms’ told her to have a good time, then quickly ran off to hunt down another crazy impossible man to marry and become love struck delusional and totally unaware he HATES HER..

  • it’s funny to hear you talk about and ridicule someone for their lack of maturity molls, considering you are such an immature idiotic person yourself.

  • I have never insulted a writer on this site before, but you seriously come off as an immature, judgemental and
arrogant shit who can’t see outside of her own little bubble. It’s called empathy, Molls. All of your writing errors aside…GROW THE FUCK UP.

  • I think the point is that Brinkley says “She tried to do something dramatic to prove to her boyfriend how much he hurt her,” which makes Alexa’s actions seem less like a serious suicide attempt and more like an emo cry for help. In either case, Alexa should see a therapist. What happened is sad and tragic, but let’s not treat Alexa like she’s got a serious mental illness a la depression. By all accounts this was a “Look at what you’ve done” revenge attempt committed with not very serious pills. What Alexa did is no different than the girls who scratched their wrists (I’m not talking cutting, that’s entirely different) in junior high and showed it off the next day.

  • Even though. Some of the comments point to a not so likely suicide attempt, it doesn’t mean that those feelings were not real or were any less painful than a death. That’s what it was. A death
Her relationship with her BF. IDK anything about them but she must have a very big heart and that’s why it hurts so much to have someone you have shared everything with, suddenly decide that their part of the relationship was over. She didn’t see herself at that moment worrying about whether anyone was going to acknowledge her pain. Thank God it was only aspirin like pills. What w beautiful girl. A million guys would worship her just for her heart. The money aspect is immaterial. All the money in the world couldn’t help the pain of the breakup. No. Not at all. She is, in my eyes still relatively young and maybe not that experienced in relationships? I know shell learn from this and if theres a next time, her coping mechanisms will help her more BC that kind of pain is worse than physical pain. Everybody has a soul mate out there somewhere. I do. Maybe you do. Were the lucky ones. Sometimes it takes decades to find them. It took me 30 yrs. until I found her. If we were to lose what we have, ID be absolutely headcase on overload and so I know that maybe she thought this was her forever soulmate but apparently he was not. It also means shell have every opportunity to find him in time. Yes. Thank God she lived to find him on another day.
