Cleanse Your Brain of Taylor Swift’s Sissy Mantras

So I came across this parody of Taylor Swift songs this morning and I think I like it a lot better than anything the actual artist has ever done. After this article came out essentially putting Taylor in her place as a bad role model for young girls (I completely agree), this video showed up on YouTube. The songwriter’s message in this video is that Taylor’s “I’m so broken hearted that the cool guy doesn’t like me because I’m not a whore”-message is not only completely immature, but it’s pathetic.

I grew up listening to Fiona and Alanis and other strong females who would fuck you, drink your blood and then hang your carcass from their front porch and I still need reminders from time to time that I can do bad all by myself. What’s going to happen to a generation of teen girls who grow up thinking that the cheer captain leaves anything to be desired?

Anyway, I think this video makes a nice little point.

  • Now we’re talking! I can’t wait to show my daughter who’s idolizing these girls as if they were the know all on girlhood.

  • If you don’t like her, don’t buy her albums. Simple, really. Didn’t she sell the most albums last year? Don’t know, I don’t have any of her albums, but I do like most of her songs.

    • for gods sakes, she’s not writing about the number of albums that taylor swift sold or some other bullshit number. they’re just trying to make the point that taylor swift’s most popular hits are about saving your virginity for a dumbass boy that can’t even see your good qualities because you wear glasses or riding off into the sunset with a gorgeous fairy tale prince. it’s exactly these kinds of expectations that make young women vulnerable to assholes or make them stay with abusive men. instead of just listening and singing along, take the time to actually think about the lyrics she’s spouting off.

      • Yeah, and I was just trying to make the point that clearly her music and lyrics resonate with a huge section of society based on her album sales.

When has Taylor ever claimed to be a virgin or claim to wait until she is married? Get a grip. A song is a fucking song. If you are pathetic enough to base your life choices on a song then you deserve whatever shit comes your way.

Damn if you didn’t throw out some EXTREME psycho babble.

      • You are lucky enough to be able not to get brainwashed by her music. But most of her fans (12 yr old girls) aren’t. They idolize her and her childish princess image.
And although she never claimed she’s a virgin, she chooses purity and the boy of her dreams over independence and intelligence.
Take a little time to read the article… :)

      • I actually did attempt to read the article prior to my original post. It was just way too long to hold my attention about something so ridiculous. The writer seemed overwhelmed by her narcissism and the inability to express herself without a dissertation.

What is wrong with 12 year old girls being inspired to hold off on sex until they can fully understand AND accept the consequences? Really, I don’t see a problem with that mindset. I have no expectations for my daughter to be a virgin until she is married. In fact, I would be rather disappointed if she shortchanged her life experiences by doing so. I do, however, expect her to wait until she is an adult with independence and a means of self support. She won’t achieve those two criteria in high school.

      • right because we live in a world where purity, having the boy of your dreams along with independence and intelligence is non existent?

So we settle for one or the other????

Why the hell does being a virgin mean you are an idiot? I stayed a virgin a VERY long time and never felt cheated of intelligence and independence, in a way I felt my choice represented those characteristics in myself.

      • Monica,

“They idolize her and her childish princess image.”

I’m trying to figure out why that is such a bad thing for a 11-13 year old (child).

I suppose we should ban all dress up princess play, Cinderella, and Snow White so our little girls can get themselves a realistic view of the world and learn that fairy tales and princess dreams are devaluing and will only make them lose intelligence and independence.

I guess Bratz dolls would be a better thing to start them on so they learn that dressing like a slut and appearing promiscuous will make them feel smart and independent and more valued.

Good Lord! what is happening to childhood?

      • Um, fuck you? I’ve been with the boy of my dreams for 6 years and waited 3 of them before losing my virginity. And, oh yeah, I attend one of the best universities in the country and am a confident, independent woman. Take a little time to think about the bullshit you spew.

      • eve,
your right, we now know the source of why women become vulnerable to assholes and stay with abusive men.

I guess all the effort my husband and I have put into raising our daughters to value themselves, not settle for assholes and never ever allow themselves to be abused has been a total waste becasue they listen to Swift on the car ride home from school.

I think her songs are being WAY over analyzed here. C’mon!

By the way I wasted time crushing on/dating assholes when i was young but i married my prince and he is amazing…fairy tales did not make me vulnerable back then, it was my raging hormones.

  • I think this post is pretty much bullshit. While I agree with some of the points of the article and of the parody song, to call Taylor Swift a bad role model is pretty laughable. Many of her songs are about family and friends, and beyond that, anyone who’s ever read an interview with her knows that she had a difficult time with adolescence – a difficult time with bitchy, catty, mean pre-teen girls and dumbass boys, and I think sharing those experiences with an audience going through the same things is a very positive thing. Children and adolescents are overly sexualized already and pressured to begin acting like adults at a young age – would I rather these kids were looking up to a someone like Taylor Swift or Alanis who sings about giving blow jobs in a movie theater? Ummm….easy answer.

    • I get what you’re trying to say, but don’t you think that those girls (tylor, demi, selena itp) are too sweet? Like the parody itself says, it’s not black OR white.

    • i think people are overreacting about TS, ok, i agree with the fact that it is a little anoying that ALL her songs are about boys, and i also think that she’s getting a little old to be writting these kind of songs about fairytales and stuff, but in the end if you listen to her songs and try to remember what it was like when you were actually 14 or 15 it kinda makes you smile cuz it IS funny.

another thing, i dont remember Taylor ever saying she’s a virgin and i honestly couldnt care less, and i think you are all basing your opinion on her attitude, if that was the case Miley says she’s a virgin and look at her!!!

i also think Taylor has been a privileged kid all her life hasnt she? are we all supossed to only like people who overcome all kinds of problems?? so why do people hate her “clean” songs?? nobody hated will smith with his clean reap did they?

and finally, maybe her songs are lame stories about loser girls with glasses, but honestly how many kids are there in a highschool? 300?400? and how many of them are the cool kids? about 20 at most, so i guess if someone wants to write about the stupid dreams a lonely girl is having at the back of the classroom is not so bad

by the way i also didnt like her winning album of the year, but i still like her

  • Great parody, it wonderfully sums up all the message in TS’s songs. I don’t really think that because of TS and singers like her we’re going to have a whole generation of “southern belles”, but I kinda miss songs about strong women sang by strong women. “Survivor”, “Independent Woman” or even “You oughta know” – it really doesn’t matter, I just miss this strength.

  • I love Fiona loads more than Taylor and think she’s immensely more talented, but she was extremely depressed and angsty. Though she suffered for her art, she isn’t exactly the best role model either. What we need is someone in between disney and Frida Kahlo.

  • i think there is room in life and music for both points of views. i cut my teenage teeth on the riot grrrl movement of babes in toyland, hole, bikini kill. but just because i don’t relate to taylor swifts songs doesn’t make her lyrics any less relevant to other people. not everyone is going to relate to fiona or alanis. just because you don’t write songs like fiona and alanis doesn’t mean you’re not a feminist. if taylor swift is being authentic to herself and feelings then she’s a feminist in my book.

      • WHY, OH WHY, do so many people play the “jealous” card when Molls says something negative about another female.

It drives me crazy how much this happens!

Sometimes, people say mean things and it has nothing to do with jealousy! Just plain ol’ opinion.

  • I liked it until the end. I love lady Gaga but I don’t think shes a good role model either. the Fame is all about how she loves money and attention instead of appreciating what you have.

  • So, to be good, to act your age, to dress up like good girls do, to sing pretty songs, to not use swear words, to look cute, to be talented, to be succesful without having to get naked, all of that is bad. That makes TS a bad role model? Are you fucking kidding me?????? That’s the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard in my life.

  • I think the more important issue is this: Why do we as a society insist that the people who entertain us must also be role models?

I understand that kids and tweens will inevitably want to “be like” the stars they see, but I think we do them a disservice by insisting that the people who sing to them, play sports for them, or act in movies for them become perfect role models. Kids aren’t stupid. Parents simply need to have discussions with their kids when they see one of their idols making choices the parents may not approve of–and be prepared to face disagreement from their kids.

It’s only by discussing difficult issues (moral, societal, what have you) that we can create a generation of kids who know how to think critically. A girl (or boy) who knows how to think critically will have a strong sense of self no matter what kind of music she likes.

    • That is so true, parents should be role models and not fricken 17 year old spoiled brats. I think parents just want someone to blame for when their kids do something stupid.

  • i read the article and it sounded more like a bitter diatribe regarding something that needed far less analyzing.

anyone could study a pop star and write an article about said pop star representing what is wrong with society.

C’mon! the girls listening to Taylor are not going to internalize some anti feminist worldview.

Way too much weight is being attributed to her music, and yes that parody was damn funny…but when it comes to role models for my daughters I would pick Swift over Ke$ha, Britney or Rihanna any day.

By the way, why is being sweet, crushing on boys, loving your family, and coming across virginal so bad??? Of all the things to complain about our young kids emulating!?!

The songs lyrics are cheesy but boy do they remind me of how I felt in High School.

The songs resonate with girls b/c that is how they feel. Taylor is not telling girls to feel a certain way, she is singing something they know and already feel and something they will eventually grow out of.

By the way many of us were burned by the slutty cheerleader who stole our prom date and most of us can remember what it was like to be considered a geek just b/c you were in band…her fluffy video is just illustrating those realities.

  • I love Taylor Swift, and I also love this parody.
I like TS’s songs, but I also agree with the points raised.
    Damn I’m agreeable today…

      • i think i read somewhere that she wrote that song “15” when she was a freshman in high school. And you can make that same comment about Stephanie Meyer, who is in her 30’s writing about teenagers.

      • THANK YOU! She’s twenty freaking years old. Her fan base is starting to grow up.. she might wanna try it soon, too. I’m so sick of this nice girl thing. It makes a girl like me wanna get up and stick it to the world and media al together.

  • Just got to the end of the article, and, no surprise, the author is a worshiper of the drunkass-guida Lady Gag-Me

  • The song is great, and I agree 100% with its message. It’s great and many girls should watch the video. HOWEVER – Lady Gaga? I love Lady Gaga but bloody Bad Romance says “You know that I want you, you know that I NEED (need!!) you, I want your bad, bad romance. I want your loving and I want your revenge”.
It’s not exactly empowering, pro-independence either, is it?

    • come on… i know what you mean, but… calm down. she NEEDS the one she wants just like you NEED the one you want. lets not get carried away.

  • i’m glad people are finally starting to realize that she isn’t talented OR a good role model! shes a nice person, fine. but i really dont think she deserves to be standing on every stage in long gowns accepting awards for everything alongside real artists like Beyonce.

….not to mention she gets literary references incorrect all the time (romeo and juliet, scarlet letter, etc)

i’ve long realized how weak she makes her female characters in her songs. “oh the boy has to come and save me” its really sad! i wouldn’t want my daughter to feel that way. yea, give little girl some alanis! haha

  • I think the article and song, both make valid points — but I think when it comes down to it, two things sell: sex OR purity.
You either have female celebrities like Swift, who have made a name for themselves due to their “good” images. Or, you have celebrities who are blatantly over sexualized, in order to sell their shit – such as the young(er) Britney Spears or Christina Augilera.

Either way I don’t think anything is necessarily wrong with Taylor Swift. Her songs resonate with young girls, because they’re about things they’re experiencing and things in which she experienced.
She may be cliche, but isn’t high school one big fucking cliche?

On another note – the author is applauding Lady Gaga for originality. I really do love Lady Gaga’s music, but it’s all cookie-cutter pop, IMO. (Except – she does have some crazy ass vocals!) Gaga markets herself on being unconventional and crazy… I doubt though, she’d have the cult following she has if she were the normal raven-haired girl she appears to be in the vintage footage and photos of her.

  • Im so sick of Taylor Swift seriously. I cant believe her stupid songs about fairytales and daydreaming made it to the radio. Ugh.

  • Dear Sexy Taylor Swift , here is a reggae song that I wrote for you to the
beat/instrumental of a reggae song called, Baby Girl, that was originally sang by the reggae singer named Sean Paul. But I wrote you my own Introduction, Chorus, plus verse to the beat/instrumental of this song using my own lyrics. So here is my song for you Taylor Swift.

    Song Title: Baby Girl
My Introduction: Yo girl you’re so cute , babe listen.
Chorus: Hey girl, can I hold your hands, in the land, understand, I will like to be your man. Hey girl , you’re so damn fine, all the time, sexy girl can we meet , and spend some time.

  • “she beat Kelly Clarkson, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga for “video of the year” and I yelled [a bit drunk, I admit] “WHAT THE FUCK? GAGA? BEYONCE? ANYONE?” at the teevee, and, as if on cue, Hennessey-shitfaced Kanye popped up on stage to speak my mind” BEST LINE EVER! LAUGHED FOR DAYS…

  • Dear Taylor Swift,my name is Ike Nash and I live in Toronto Canada, in the city of Scarborough and here is a rap/hip hop song that I wrote for you to the
beat/instrumental of a rap song called Da Introduction.
This song was originally rapped by the rap group named
Bone Thugs N Harmony, but I wrote a rap love song, to a certain part of their song, I wrote it to the part where their first chorus starts, after their short intro when Layzie Bone says Yeah N…a, and beyond that, writing my own lyrics to the beat/instrumental of their rap song.I wrote my own short Intro, Chorus and Verse 1 for you Taylor Swift. So here is my song for you Taylor Swift.

    Song Title: Da Introduction

    My Short Intro: Yeah Babe
Chorus: Hey babe, you’re hot, baby don’t stop, making songs, girl.
Verse 1: Girlfriend, how you been, doing love,I’ll write you songs, cause you’re so hot, baby, can I see you some day, maybe on a Monday girl, I’ll buy you flowers, and, take you to the movies, how are things lately, baby I’ve been thinking of, buying you clothes from the stores, baby girl, can you be my lady, baby I will pick you up, in, my, Mercedes Benz, call your friends, this is my love song girl, baby can you rule my world, hey sexy girl, can I call you on the phones.

  • Dear sexy Mrs Taylor Swift, here is another verse, which is verse 2 that I wrote for you to the beat/instrumental of the rap song called Da Introduction, which was originally rapped by rap group named Bone Thugs N Harmony. But I previously wrote my own short intro , chorus, and verse 1 for you using my own lyrics, and now I’m picking up from where I left off at verse 1, following it up writing you verse 2 using my own lyrics. So here is my song for you sexy Mrs Taylor Swift.

    Song Title: Da Introduction

Verse 2: I’m in the zone girl, sitting at home. Call me on the phones, you can reach me ,sexy girl, I’m in Ontario, that is where I live girl, I’m stepping out, stepping through my neighborhood, girl you look so good, and you’re a super star,oh yes you are,buy you cars, baby girl, can you feel me from afar, baby come on over here, oh yeah, I like your sexy hair, I like the way you stand, baby can I be your man, so throw it up, hey, baby put your hands up.

  • hey all you kanye (or however you that POS name). Why not pick on someone who not only sings, buy writes her own songs. This idiot and his foolas are Amrican Motors picking on Ford. They are not only noones, but are never wres. If this idiot has talent, I will kiss your butt at high noon in the square of your choice. What an over rated ubderachiever! The fool probably couldn’t even park cars. Get a grip, any a hole can RAP. Just get decent cannedf music and talk. A monkey could do that, and if you check Nationsl Geogrsphic probably has.

From a nobody to a nobody, grow up fool.
