Paramount+ turning Urban Cowboy and Flashdance into series

Paramount+ is going all in on it’s 80’s revival.  This week comes word the streamer will be revising “Urban Cowboy” for a series based on the 1980 film starring Travolta and Debra Winger.

The series will mimic the film in a lot of ways and will follow the character ‘Bud’ (Travolta in the film) and his journey from his farm to the big city. It will even remain set in the 1980’s and feature lots of 80’s music. <squeal!>

As for “Flashdance,” Justin Simien of “Dear White People” is now onboard to both write and direct the series.  It will be set in the modern day and focuses on a Black woman working in a strip club who has dreams of becoming a ballet dancer.

Released in 1983, “Flashdance” was an example of the “high concept” movies that dominated the ’80s box office and was reductively described as “‘Rocky’ For Women.”

The absolutely iconic music video for “What a Feeling” is below.
