Rita Wilson revealed that like Angelina Jolie, she also underwent a double mastectomy recently – just last week, in fact – after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She also had reconstructive surgery soon after. But the craziest thing about this story is that she nearly never got her diagnosis to begin with – and wouldn’t have had she not sought a second opinion.

The 58-year-old actress says she underwent the procedure last week — with husband Tom Hanks by her side — after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma. She says the first test for cancer came back negative, but she got a second opinion which detected her true condition.
Rita told People, “I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn’t ‘feel’ right.”
Good for her for trusting her instincts and finding a doctor to give her a second opinion and proper care. That could have made all the difference between life and death – and frankly, it probably did.
The amount of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer every day is staggering. I’ve said this before, but if there’s any disease we so desperately need a cure for – a quicker one than chemotherapy and radiation, which are really just treatments, not cures – it’s cancer.
Hope they got it all and she recovers
