Cher is a total queen, and is totally loved by queens, so it’s no surprise that performing in an anti-gay country like Russia wouldn’t really appeal to her. Then again, having a gay icon perform in an anti-gay country seems like it wouldn’t really appeal to Russia themselves, but apparently that’s not the case as she was offered to perform at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the country as well as to be the ambassador – both things she turned down.

Q: What do you think about what’s going on in Russia right now?
A: I can’t name names but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does.
Good on you, Cher! I think lots of people are boycotting Russia now. I certainly would stay out of Russia at the moment, considering… but they do have those princess-y castles that look like they’re out of fairy tales, so it’ll be a shame to miss out on those. And yes, I’m being flippant.
I hope she was their number one choice and that they took it badly.
Maybe they can have Miley Cyrus, she will do anything for a buck with no scruples.
