Jackson Family Appalled By James Durbin’s ‘Pepsi Moment’ Comment

If you saw American Idol on Wednesday, you know that after his pyro-packed performance, contestant James Durbin said to Ryan Seacrest, “I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around — so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a ‘Pepsi moment.”

At the time I had no idea what the fuck he was referring to. I was like, “Should have had a V8? What? What does that even mean?” But apparently it was a nod to Michael Jackson getting lit on fire while filming a Pepsi commercial in the 80s. Michael suffered second and third degree burns all over his body and was hooked on pain killers for years after the accident.

Michael’s family has released a statement via thier rep that said, “We were shocked to see this. It’s nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael’s death.”

Eh, I don’t see this as being that big of a deal. James is kind of an awkward guy and I doubt he even knew what he was saying. In fact, he took to his Twitter yesterday and sent out the following message, “For anyone talkin..I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it…” and then Tweeted, “Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people.”

Taking stabs at Pepsi? TOTALLY, JAMES. Totally necessary and worth it… *rolling my eyes*… Whatever.

  • Oh my goodness, the freakin pop up ads on this site are beyond annoying. As I was typing this, another pop up interrupted. When I come to this site and then close the window I have somewhere between 3 and 8… EIGHT! pop up ads on my desktop. It’s one of the main reasons I stopped coming to this site and I’m never going to check back to see if the site’s been fixed up again. Not to mention the content is a far cry from what I loved a couple years ago when sasha was in charge. Such a disappointment.

  • Just because MJ is dead doesn’t mean he’s a saint. This dude didn’t say anything bad about MJ but expressed his legitimate concerns that arise from a well documented previous incident.
The Jackson family should shut the f*** up. F***ing famewhore vultures.

  • I agree with crunch. Why is MJ above any negative or joking comments now that he has died? People make jokes about other dead celebrities. And this wasn’t a joke about him being dead or how he died (which WOULD be in bad taste.) On the other hand, the cover up that it wasn’t about MJ it was about Pepsi is lame.

  • Overreaction. I don’t understand what’s offensive about mentioning an accident that happened 25 yrs ago…

  • I concur with you 100%, I loved MJ and his art and I was sad after his death but for goodness bloody fucking sakes, Can’t we utter a single word about him without his family freaking the fuck out on us??..

He was human, not God and he had his own mishaps like everybody else….I think the Jacksons must keep thei pie-holes shut…

  • If it was his son whose skull was burned it wouldn’t be funny. I think the jackson’s main problem with the statement is that people make light of situations that DID happen and make huge deals out of things that didn’t.
