Gwen Stefani to Design Work Uniforms for ‘W’ Hotels

Whether this country elects Obama or McCain in November, Gwen Stefani will still be working for W.

The L.A.M.B. designer has teamed up with the upscale hotel chain to design the uniforms for its female bar staff.

And Gwen’s touch is instantly apparent: the black jersey dresses combine a fitted ’80s silhouette and asymmetrical styling with ’60s seam detailing and side vents. When creating the design, she knew it would have to not just look good, but be functional for active employees. “I wanted to design a super cute dress that I would be excited to have in my own closet and approached it in the same way I think about my clothing for a tour,” she says. “We’ve designed a sexy and comfortable outfit for these women to wear out on their own stage every night.”

Whaddya wanna bet they’re not making those dresses in any size above a 6? Because we all know the female bartenders at the W are chosen based on their remarkable abilities to mix a martini.

Sketches are above.

I actually think they’re cute dresses, but man oh man I am grateful every day that I’ve never in my life had a job I had to wear heels to. I can’t imagine having to wear a skirt that short to my job. In fact, if I worked at the W, I’d probably complain. The short skirt? Plus the slit? Look, I’m all about looking sexy at work — I’m just more happy and confident when I feel like I look hot — but having on-the-job sexuality mandated? I’d be like, “Look, if I wanted to work in a strip joint, I would. And I’d probably make more money. But since I don’t, I’ll wear fucking pants, thankyouverymuch.”

What do you guys think?

Would you wear this shit to your job?

  • I don’t think the dress will really be that short I think it’s just how they draw designs for clothes… But if it is ummm no cool

  • Ladies, I definitely agree with your logical and savvy points in regard to how the uniform would work for you in the real-world. However, as soon as Gwen’s uniforms become the dress code at the W, I’m checkin’ in:)

  • Yeah, I think that they’ll modify it. It was “Here, Gwen! Design!” and then “oh… yeah, we’re making changes. Like adding a button down long sleeved white shirt and a bow tie” because hotel managers suck and they always fuck up the uniforms… ooh. underlying bitterness in me. sorry.

  • I bartend part-time and my current uniform is a black bustier and a pencil skirt. It’s actually wicked easy to work in as the skirt’s nice and long and the bustier holds you in pretty tight. Yes Gwen’s dress is short, but at least it’s not super tight and it hides the ladies. I approve.

  • I am a nurse and I wish Gwen would design scrubs. Think Kimora Lee Simmons and her Baby Phat line, even Katherine Heigl is designing scrubs. There is a young fashionable market out there in the health care field!

  • Hmmm. I’m a size 6–HOWEVER. That short with a slip isn’t all that comfortable every day of the week, Gwen. It’s “super-cute” for bartenders and cocktail waitresses, maybe. Behind the consierge desk? Not so much.
