Matt Bomer heard about that super important online petition to re-cast him as Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey film. Fans of the book are actually super pissed that Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam are the leads. They would prefer Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel, and they actually believe if they have enough signatures, they’ll get the film re-cast.
Mr. Bomer was super polite in his response to the madness. From ETonline via Entertainment Weekly,
Think they’ll stop now? I doubt it. As of now the petition has close to 57,000 supporters and will likely hit 60,000 by the end of the day.
Does anyone really care this much? Anyone bothered by the casting? If so, are you team Bomer or do you just want anyone other than Hunnam?

Fifty Shades of Grey fans are the new Twilight fans in terms of the “you guys are absolutely nuts” factor. Casting for the lead actors in the Fifty Shades film was just announced. Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam “won” the roles, and fans are downright pissed. You see, they wanted Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel. And because they’re totally f-cking delusional, they think that writing a petition and getting signatures will change this. Here’s their petition, straight from Change.org:
Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too. So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING.
And here’s what they want you to (digitally) sign:
To:Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
That isn’t how Hollywood works, everyone. When I checked, the petition 12,908 had signatures. When I refreshed about 2 minutes later, it had 12,983. They even made their own poster, for emphasis (above). “SHITT GUYSSSSS I’M SO PROUD OF EVERYONE WHO IS HELP RIGHT NOW,” says the petition’s founder.

“I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”
Matt Bomer (In Time, USA’s White Collar) really surprised—OK, “surprise” is too strong a word—when he tacitly confirmed his sexual preference before a huge audience.
Bomer was one of the honorees at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. It was during his acceptance speech for an award in “Arts and Activism” that Bomer publicly thanked his partner and kids. BOOM! That is how you do it! No show, no theatrics: you quietly lead by example instead. Very nice, Mr. Bomer.
Matt Bomer had never overtly denied his sexuality or lifestyle; neither has he ever felt the need to address his private life. From a 2010 interview in Details magazine:
Q: Does it bother you that so much of what’s been written about you is speculation that you’re gay?
A: I don’t care about that at all. I’m completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life.
Q: But you don’t want to talk about it.
A: I have a network and a show riding on my shoulders. I would say a big difference between my character and me is that I can be too trusting. And I’ve realized in this business, that’s not necessarily the smartest thing to be. I definitely have a thing or two to learn from the con artists.
That last quote makes me so sad, honestly. Can you believe that we still live in a place and time where you have to pretend like maybe you don’t love the people you love, all for the sake of your career?
Providentially, Bomer’s partner—Simon Halls—is a publicist. He represents both Glee‘s Ryan Murphy as well as my patron saint, NPH, so Halls knows a thing or two about being very successfully, openly gay. Lucky for Matt Bomer! He has a lot of support on his side.
