Janelle Monae has covered David Bowie‘s ‘Heroes’ for Pepsi’s Beats of the Beautiful Game LP, and now there’s a video for it and it’s great. Produced by some great artists called The Young Astronauts, the vid features cute kids hanging out eating snacks, reading comics and fighting bullies and I just like it a lot.
The same can be said about Janelle in general – she’s so underrated and so, so good.

… In the ‘Prime Time’ video, that is. That’s right, Janelle Monae‘s new single, ‘Prime Time’, features Miguel and they shot the video together and here it is and here they are. Janelle plays her alter ego Cyndi Mayweather in the clip, and Miguel’s character is called Joey Vice, though I’m not quite sure why. Anyway:
What do we think? Janelle’s new album is really amazing, start to finish. The production is phenomenal. She’s still one of the most underrated artists out there, I’d say. Still, I wonder if the plot line isn’t to further discourage talk of her sexuality… though I’m probably overthinking things.

Janelle Monae isn’t saying if she’s gay, straight, or bisexual (not that it’s any of our business, obvs). She stopped by the Sirius show Sway in the Morning and answered questions about her sexuality in a very coy way. From The YBF:
Women are amazing…and so are guys….There’s nothing wrong with being bisexual, there’s nothing wrong with being lesbian or gay. I am an advocate. i have friends who are in same sex relationships and I feel love has no sexual orientation. Live has no religious belief. Love is the purest and most important thing we can possess for ourselves and for others.
The hosts wanted her to cut right through that, so when they asked her if that meant if she was bisexual, Ms. Monae answered,
I keep my personal life very much to myself. I want everybody to focus on my music. I also don’t want to let anybody down. I want women to still be attracted to me. Go get my album! I want men to still be attracted to me so I have to be political in this. So I can’t really tell y’all!
Meanwhile we got Lady Gaga talking about how much she loves p—y and calling her boyfriend a lesbian. Some people interpret that as her trying to use the gay community while others see it as her being very comfortable talking about her sexuality.
It sounds like Ms. Monae is very clear about not wanting to lose any fans about saying what she is or isn’t (“I have to be political in this”). And some will see that as her right and others will see it as her being afraid, but what it all comes down to is, and she said it herself, “Go get my album!” Truth.
Monae’s second album, The Electric Lady, came out this week. She collaborated with Prince on a track.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards happened last night and all that means to me is that we get to “Ooh!” and “Ahh!” and “WTF?” over what everyone was wearing. There were guidelines this year for what attendees could and could not wear. I mean, really! Here are some highlights:
Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic. [...] Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible ‘puffy’ bare skin exposure.
Hee hee, puffy! That’s some creative phrasing.
So let’s get to some standouts, for better or for worse.
Singer Carly Rae Jepsen may have finally redeemed herself in my eyes after that diabolical BCBG nightmare of an outfit she wore at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. (Rumor has it someone was fired over that outfit. I hope so.)
