Oopsies! Justin Timberlake Sorry About That Whole ‘Take Back The Night’ Thing

justin timberlake

Justin Timberlake‘s new single is called ‘Take Back the Night’, which, if you live under a rock, you may not know is also the name of an anti-domestic violence/rape organisation who are none too happy with the whole “coincidence” (Justin’s words). In fact, the group has threatened potential legal action as they feel Justin used the phrase “without permission”.

Now Justin has spoken out about the whole fiasco, insisting that it totally wasn’t on purpose and now that he knows about the ACTUAL Take Back the Night, he’s working towards stopping violence against women. Uh, in the span of a week, dude? Okay…

From Radar Online:

“Upon the release of my new single ‘Take Back The Night’, I was made aware of an organization of the same name called The Take Back The Night Foundation.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to let all know that neither my song nor its lyrics have any association with the organization. As I’ve learned more about The Take Back The Night Foundation, I’m moved by its efforts to stop violence against women, create safe communities and encourage respectful relationships for women — Something we all should rally around.

“It is my hope that this coincidence will bring more awareness to this cause.”

So… is he still just gonna let the song drop and hope for the best, or…? I mean, to be fair – and y’all know I’m a “Feminazi”, LOLZ – but I think this is a bit much, and I do think it was coincidental. When I’m sitting down to write, I don’t think to myself, “Huh, I wonder if any women’s advocacy groups share a name with any of the phraseology I’m using here?” Like, it sucks and now that he knows he should “correct it”, but I don’t think he’s taking anything away from the organisation by naming his song ‘Take Back the Night’. Eh, whatever.

  • I appearently live under a rock (called Germany) and have never heard of that organisation. But come on, “take back the night” is a great title for a song – and as we talk about JT the title is probably much better than the song – and would be a good title for a vampire movie. So the organisation shouldn’t act like a pouty child.

    • Take Back the Night is mostly an US organisation, it’s normal us in Europe don’t know about it as much esp. if you’re not very involved with feminism.

  • I’m so tired of modern-day white Western feminist bullshit. Women in India an Africa don’t even complain as much as American women about this stuff… and it’s a little odd. I wonder if feminism is more about entitlement than gender equality. It seems like everyone living in places like America has entitlement issues these days.

    • Have you ever spoken to an actual African or Asian woman or are just making shit up? Because I can assure you they do complain, only their voices aren’t heard. Feminism is about gender equality and if you think in the Western world it’s only about petty shit then you have no idea and live under a rock. Look for some facts or statistics. Actually, I’ll give you some because I know you won’t look for shit: In Oklahoma, a sex offender got sole custody of his 6-year-old daughter. In Spain, so far this year, 20 children have been killed as revenge towards their mothers. More women and girls have died in the US in the past 10 years due to gender violence than soldiers in Iraq. The Steubenville rapists walked free. More than half of female soldiers in the US army will be raped at some point by their own workmates. Reddit’s Creepshots. In the US, rapists can child for custody of the child born from the rape they committed. 97% of rapists are never incarcerated. I am not entitled.

      • i think an even greater sign that we need feminism in this world is that someone has just said, in relation to an organization that is meant to combat violence against women, including sexual assault, is just women “complaining”…
but whatever, i’m going to continue to “complain” about a culture that tells people “don’t get raped” instead of “don’t rape”

  • JT would be taken more seriously if he wasn’t dressed as a hipster doofus, especially that hat.

  • So I’m a woman, and I have never heard of this organization. I also think feminism is ridiculous “ahh wahhh I’m a woman” well I would hate to be a dude. I also realize men may get better treatment and what not but honestly it doesn’t matter. So feminists should shut the hell up because honestly they sound stupid. Side note. Annoying person that always comments, go away and stop throwing facts around. I doubt you have personally experienced anything you’re talking about. And as someone who has, we don’t talk about it. You can be a victim or you can shut up and live your life.

  • Count me among the uneducated and sheltered heathens who’ve never heard of this organization. But I appreciate your demeaning comments!
