The Best Part of The Oscars: Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer’s Acceptance Speeches

A photo of Octavia Spencer

When the Oscar nominations were first released, I wanted nothing more than for Melissa McCarthy to win the award for Best Supporting Actress in Bridesmaids. And truly, I wanted it so, so much. But then something happened. Octavia Spencer, a nominee in the same category whose movie, The Help, I still haven’t seen, managed to work her way into my heart with her wise words and beautiful attitude. I found myself starting to root for Octavia instead, and I felt so torn about that.

But then Octavia won, and I saw her acceptance speech, and I’m not torn at all anymore:

How could you watch that and have any negative feelings whatsoever? Go ahead, watch it a few more times so you can get a wonderful warm and fuzzy in your soul for the rest of the day.

Now, the Best Supporting Actor award? That was an entirely different story. Christopher Plummer was always going to win, there was no way he wasn’t going to win, and that was exactly what I wanted. I LOVE Christopher Plummer. Captain Von Trapp, you guys, come on. Christopher Plummer was also the villian in Up, and the narrator of Madeline. He’s a magical man, and he was exceedingly magical in Beginners, which yes, I actually did see. He deserved this a million times over, and his acceptance speech only highlighted that fact:

Are you charmed enough yet?
