If you’ve never seen the movie ‘Cast Away’ with Tom Hanks I highly recommend it. Tom Hanks plays a man who is the sole survivor of a terrible plan crash and washes up on the shores of a deserted island where he lives for 4 years alone.
To cope with the loneliness, Hanks begins to talk to a volleyball that’s washed ashore, which he names Wilson due to the brand printed on the ball.
People were pretty thrown by this when the film came out. Some said they couldn’t imagine ever talking to a volleyball, but as someone who regularly has conversations with their cat, I can totally see a descent into madness that has me talking to all kinds of inanimate objects.
Ok, so back to the auction.
Originally, Wilson was estimated to only sell for a maximum of $80,000 USD. However, it exceeded auction expectations and sold for over $311,000 USD! It is indeed a great movie prop.
