Khloe Kardashian has been by estranged husband (no more) Lamar Odom‘s side every step of the way since he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel from a serious drug overdose. She never left him at the hospital, and now that he’s back in Los Angeles, she’s called off their divorce and is apparently ready to give it another go as she helps him through rehab and the lengthy recovery he requires. But when a People interview with Khloe came out this week in which she discusses Lamar and their relationship, the Internet exploded with criticism that Khloe was trying to profit off of Lamar’s issues, something she took SERIOUS offense to. After all, she didn’t WANT to talk to the press, she was contractually obligated to, and anyway, the bulk of the interview was done before Lamar went into a coma.

It should have been a fun day. On Oct. 13, Khloe Kardashian playfully posed for photos for People and then spoke candidly about life, love and her doomed marriage to Lamar Odom. But just hours later she learned the heartbreaking news that Odom, who turns 36 on Nov. 6, had been found unresponsive at a Nevada brothel. After flying to his bedside in Las Vegas—and taking control of all medical decisions while refusing to leave his side as he battle pneumonia and kidney damage—a decidedly more somber Kardashian spoke to People’s Aili Nahas, this time in whispers as she sat in the room with Odom. “You never know what to expect in life,” she says. “I love Lamar, and I’ll always be there for him like I promised.”
A few things to note:
- Khloe said the only contact she made with People after Lamar’s hospitalization was a 5 minute phoner
- Khloe says she’s mostly taking care of Lamar because she loves him, yeah, but also because “he has no support system”
- Khloe is still apparently with her NBA player boyfriend, James Harden
