‘The X-Files’ is coming back to our TV screens

It’s been 13 years since The X-Files left our TV screens, and thank fuck for that. I’ll admit it – I was a MASSIVE X-Files fan (even went all the way to San Fran to see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson – though let’s be honest, I was there for Gillian – back in 2008) and absolutely loved the series… up until Season 8 or so, when all hell broke loose and it was a total disaster. By the time the Season 9 finale came ’round, I think we were all happy to bid adieu to the travesty the show had become. The 2008 movie didn’t do much to restore any faith in the franchise (though I think most M/S shippers were pretty happy to finally get some concrete proof of the relationship they knew existed for years) so I think we all pretty much assumed that was the end of that.

Except it’s not. The X-Files is coming back for a whole new six episode series on Fox – it’s official and the network announced it today.  Here’s the press release:

Thirteen years after the original series run, FOX has ordered the next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES, a thrilling, six-episode event series which will be helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.

The announcement was made today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group and Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of THE X-FILES. Production on THE X-FILES event series is set to begin in summer 2015. Further details remain under wraps and will be announced at a later date.

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of THE X-FILES – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,” remarked Newman and Walden. “THE X-FILES was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as THE X-FILES, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

I so wish I was excited for this. Will I watch it? Obviously – I’m not a heathen. Will I enjoy it? Eh, somehow I think I should refrain from getting my hopes too high.

What do you guys think?

  • It’s going to be fantastic no matter what.

You’re wrong about season 8 and 9 though, they were magnificent. Different but still good. I always kind of agreed with your sentiment but I rewatched them when they hit Netflix and enjoyed them hugely. There was some clusterfucky nonsense in there, sure, but hell, all the seasons had some of that.

SO THERE. You are wrong. :)

    • Sorry, I’ll never be convinced on Doggett and Mo(ro)nica. The storylines were shit, their characters were shit, etc. The show should have ended after Season 7, and I say that as someone who lived and breathed that show, haha. But of course, to each his/her own! :)
