Liam Neeson is Considering a Conversion to Islam

According to Liam, who was – ohmygosh – raised as a Catholic altar boy in Ireland, after spending much time in Istanbul filming his latest movie, The Grey, a change to practicing the Islamic religion might be in order:

“The call to prayer happens five times a day, and for the first week, it drives you crazy, and then it just gets into your spirit, and it’s the most beautiful, beautiful thing. There are 4,000 mosques in the city. Some are just stunning, and it really makes me think about becoming a Muslim.”

Liam has never made it a secret that he’s interested in religion, but hasn’t formally “settled” into a particular sector:

“I was reared a Catholic, but I think every day we ask ourselves, not consciously, what are we doing on this planet? What’s it all about? I’m constantly reading books on God or the absence of God and atheism.”

So, OK. Sure. I’m all for “to each his own,” even if I don’t practice what others practice. I’m not going to demonize someone because of their spiritual (or lack of) beliefs. It’s not my place. I know what I believe, and to me, what I believe is real, but I also believe that what you believe is also real. Call it a cop-out, call it what you’d like: it is what it is. The thing that gets me, though, is that there’s a large outcry against Liam for “abandoning” his religion and converting to a religion that many bigots worldwide look down upon. In a lot of the comment forums where related information regarding Neeson is posed, there are hate-mongers who appear to stop at nothing in alienating every single Muslim for what they believe. For example, from the Daily Mail:

“Don’t do it, Liam!”

Or the best:

“He converts to Islam, I will loose [sic] all respect for him as an actor.”

Yes, because YOUR RELIGION dictates your talents and defines you as a person. Right.

Then you have the American sites who have a lot of commenters also saying the same thing. From the Huffington Post:

“The muslim faith is NO good! Liam does not know what he is getting himeself [sic] into!!!”

“Relax guys…he’s only THOUGHT of becoming a Muslim…hope he doesn’t go thru [sic] with it :S”

What really gets me, what really, really gets me is that if Liam (or another prolific Muslim) claimed that they were converting to Christianity or some other more “user-friendly” religion, the consensus would be all “Oh! Joy! Good for him!” but because there are so many people who are prejudiced against anyone who practices the Islamic faith, Liam is looked at like some kind of traitor. Does. not. compute. Sorry.

I guess that whole “freedom of choice” thing that the world loves to ram down one another’s throats does not apply when it comes to anyone even considering the Muslim faith as a viable path. The f-ck.

  • I have to admit, there is something appealing about Islam. I definitely prefer the idea of complete submission to God to the whole buddy-Christ thing that many Christian sects seem to have going on. I find it comforting to know that, if there is a higher power much greater than myself, He/She doesn’t give a f*ck about my puny life, and my job is to obey Him/Her abjectly. But I’m an atheist, so what do I know…

    • Do you find it comforting that muhammad married and fucked a 6 year old girl? And that it is written in the qur’an that you are to do as muhammad did? Just sayin’.

      • there are a lot of questionable ideas in the bible as well. i guess youre one of those folk who follow it word for word? every person of the islamic faith is not the same…sort of like christians.

      • Oh, what questionable ideas came from Jesus Christ himself? That you are to treat others as you would want to be treated? Pretty sure it’s written in islamic law that you can marry a pre-pubescent girl if you’re a man. It’s how all the islamic countries’ governments think about that issue. And it’s not calling the qur’an into question, it’s calling their “messaih” and his actions into question.

      • it does not say this in the quran and is not true. i think that one should do their own research before spreading rumors. have you ever read the quran? seen anything about muhammed with a 6 year old?

      • Also, the quran, bible, and the torah share many of the same mesasges. it says in all three to treat others as you want to be treated. i have read all three books. so im not just ” pretty sure ” about the information i am giving out, but 100% sure. nowhere in the quran does it say that one is allowed to marry a prepubscent girl. i grew up with christian and muslim upbringing and my parents have allowed me to decide my religion by doing my own research and i have chosen islam. i think the world should maybe look up to liam and do some research themselves rather than criticizing a religion that they do not know any facts about.

      • Excuse me! stop spreading lies on here. Muhammad(pbuh) does not marry a 6 year old girl.
You are such a liar. Shame on you for using such bad words for such a great Prophet.
If you really are interested in knowing the fact, then your source should be a reliable source not some fox news and other rumors that you hear.
Here is a reliable source of what exactly is the matter regarding Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) marriage with Ayesha (may Allah be please with her).

If you are really interested in knowing you will read the above link otherwise if you are here to spill venom you wont bother.

      • He did not. Yes he did marry her at that age with the request of her father but it is not like in the west. he did not touch her until she was older. that was still a young age but here in the west they are doing it at that age without marriage even though the puberty comes much later than in hotter countries. Also it was in the cold west legally permissible for a girl to marry at the age of 12 about 200 years ago.

  • The man obviously does not understand his faith and has probably never been catechized with the fullness of his Christianity. Any Catholic who fully understands the fullness of his faith would rather die first then convert to falseness. Many this day in the Middle East and Africa are doing just that rather then submit to falseness … Pray for this man who is appears to be lost in the relativistic Hollywood world…

    • OH believe me, if he was raised a Catholic in Ireland he knows better than you what Catholicism is like.

  • I guess it all depends on how “radical” you practice your religion. I was raised catholic, my father was a muslim, I had always protestant, muslim or non-religious friends, and everything was fine because neither of us was too involved in religion to forget to define a person by his/her character.
Most religions are fine if you don’t over-do them. Not every christian thinks that gay people are evil, not every muslim girl has to walk around in a burka.

    • this is exactly how i feel about it. each person may choose the parts of religion that matter to them. just because you use the bible doesnt mean you follow it to the word.

  • I don’t think he’s seriously thinking about it. It’s like when you watch a documentary on PBS about the Amish and think, “Gee, the Amish seem so nice and salt of the earth kind of people. I think it would be cool to be Amish” But you know full well and good there’s no way in hell you’re gonna get rid of your iphone and start speaking low German.

  • You people need to realize it was not a serious commitment – it’s EXACTLY how Blah, above, said it is.

    • “you people” … you sir are the issue here … not know crap about your own religion let alone others. i am not Muslim or catholic and i dont pretend to know everything about any religion but i know enough to say that you are very uneducated

  • The whole, “Mohammad married a 6 yr old is BS”. Anyway, may Allah guide him and all of us. Go Liam! you’ll do the absolute best thing, go for it.

    • I’m suspended you’re allowed on the Internet. Better make sure you hide it before you get beaten/stoned, right?

  • Keep denying him marrying Aisha, pussies. Own it – your “prophet” was a pedophile. All Arab countries acknowledge and accept it and it is ok by then because he did it. Now all of a sudden it’s untrue? You douchebags.

    • Didn’t you say “treat others as you would like to be treated”? Why are you calling other people “pussies”? I dont think you would like to be called that. Any where you go, you cannot make a point talking this way. You seem filled with so much hatred and so angry, while my tone of writing is so much more relaxed and peaceful. I don’t think youre actions are a very good representation of christianity.

Also Aisha was not 6 years old. She was past puberty and Muhammad did not have any kids with Aisha. No sexual relations with her.

    • “Now the firstborn said to the younger, ‘Our father is old, AND THERE IS NO MAN ON THE EARTH to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.’ So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, AND HE DID NOT KNOW WHEN SHE LAY DOWN OR WHEN SHE AROSE.

“It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, ‘Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.’ Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, AND HE DID NOT KNOW WHEN SHE LAY DOWN OR WHEN SHE AROSE.

“Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. ” (Genesis 19:23-25, 30-36, NKJV)

This is obviously from the bible. Abraham’s nephew, Lot, a religious man, according to the bible, slept with his daughters. How would you explain this? Before pointing fingers at other religions. This may be one of the “questionable things” in the bible that Kathy referred to.

    • Ur just someone who hates islam.and jus because u simply hate muslims ur trying to prove it wrong. U have no idea about true facts, so ur jus bluffing whatever nonsence youv heard.first learn the facts than talk and pl have some manners in ur speech.

  • This is so celebrity-esque-be exposed to a religion for six or so months, then decide to convert to it. Isn’t Julia Roberts, one of my favorite superficial celebs, a Hindu now after “Eat, Love, Pray”? Besides, wasn’t Liam really commenting on the beauty of the practice of Islam and Islamic architecture?
Let’s run with the conversion thing anyway. I give more credit to Liam than the average celebrity, but let’s not forget the fact that he lost the love of his life and how it happened. It really was a horrible freak accident. Still, why would Islam make any more sense of that event than Catholicism?
Better to educate himself and say he has more awareness of the Islamic practice-that will fly. We all need to have a better understanding of Islam.
If he wants to continue to study it, great. Sounds like he reads books on all subject religious anyway, and perhaps his curiosity is piqued more than anything else. If I had gone through what he went through, I would be an atheist/nihilist.
And yes, conversion to Islam would screw his career. Think of Cat Stevens, who apparently converted after what sounds like a moment of grace. I respect that, but it still screwed his career.

  • I converted to islam and i am the happiest person of the world.. I wish my mother and my father will see the truth (despite all you can hear about extremists etc..) . I’m inviting everyone to check what Islam is about and try to understand that we Moslem are also waiting for Jesus son of Mary to rescue us… But we’re worshiping God and only him… No icons and no saints or prophet that we honor … All goes to God ….
May God guide you to his path..
