Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Mel Gibson is Bananas, Dude

Mel Gibson is so hella hella crazy that I can’t even begin to delve into an analysis right now. I’ll save that for the next time, and I’m sure there will be one, but for right now: Just check out this interview he did with Dean Richards.

Mel went on the show to promote his new movie, and like any star with a scandalous past, he was asked some questions about his DUI/antisemitism in addition to questions about the movie. That’s such standard interview stuff that I’m almost a little shocked that an old player like Mel has such a hard time grasping the concept. Instead of saying “no comment”, Mel tries to put on this “cool guy” attitude that’s just… obnoxious to watch. He’s all “That was like, four years ago, aren’t you over that, dude?” And I’m like, “The Holocaust was like, 45 years ago and pretty much no one is over that, so not really, dude!”. Because the only thing more disgusting than being prejudice is being prejudice and cowardly, right?! And then he called this Dean bro an asshole!

You fill those theaters, Mel. Fill ’em!

  • No. Surprisingly, I’m with Mel Gibson on this one. The guy didn’t have to bring it up. He was supposed to be promoting a movie, not talking about his past, which was FOUR years ago.

    • See normally I would agree with you, but isn’t this the first major thing he has done and the first big PR tour he’s gone on since “the incident”?

If he had been making movies and doing the press tours consistently for these past four years and journalists had had all that time to hash and re-hash these questions, then yeah, I’d be with Mel. But when you finally get out in the public eye again after such a big mess up, you better expect that these questions are gonna be brought up.

And if he wants people to like him enough again to go see his movie he should be answering them with class and dignity to try and convince us that he learned from his mistake. This just makes it seem like she same old crazy Mel so instead of rebuilding a fan base he is just confirming what we’ve all been thinking of him for the past 4 years he was basically hidden before the story about his pregnant girlfriend on the side broke. Which is ya know, the best way to gain public sympathy.

      • Ugh, agreed. He has this whole fratboy aging-football-player sense of entitlement that really gnaws at me.

It’s one thing to not want to hear the same shitty questions during an interview — I totally get that, and for a split-second I really felt for him because, yeah — but here, it’s more as if he thinks he deserves his audience’s love and respect, and he expects it, because he’s made “all the mea culpas.” Jesus.

  • It’s pretty clear by now that Molls is more than a bit spiteful when it comes to a few celebrities and Mel is probably towards the top of her list. He doesn’t come across as crazy in the interview at all.

I think most celebrity bloggers know full well that when a celebrity does an interview, they often have certain things that are not to be discussed. There seems to be a trend lately of violating this agreement, hoping to get a reaction out of the guest, which is exactly what the interviewer did. “You know what I’m talking about.” Very professional.

“Because the only thing more disgusting than being prejudice is being prejudice and cowardly, right?!”

If being prejudiced is disgusting, we’re all disgusting because we’re all prejudiced. It’s just important that you are open-minded and reevaluate your preconceptions from time to time.

And comparing Mel’s drunken outburst to the holocaust? Well, I’ll let someone else address that one.

  • Old news….right?

Molls sorry about your bedbugs you can come stay with me for a whhhile (family guy) if you whhant.

  • I know its generally seen everyone does it. But why should celebrities get to dictate what questions they get to answer. If they want the air time to publicise their movies then they should have to answer what they are asked. it shouldn’t be the celebrities doing a tv station a favour in allowing them to interview them it should be the stations doing the celebrities a favour in allowing them free publicity. I’m not suggesting that an interviewer completely ignore a film just to ask questions about someones private life but he shouldn’t have to completely ignore someones private life when names mean so much to a films success

  • Molls, you just compared Mel Gibson’s DUI to the HOLOCAUST? Beet, whe needs to be hauled in front of HR for a shakedown.

  • Molls, you do realize that the Holocaust occured during World War II, correct? WWII occured between 1939 and 1945. Not 1965. And comparing Mel’s DUI to the mass genocide of millions and millions of Jews is horrific.

    • She’s not compairing his DUI to the Holocaust, she is implying that Mel is an idiot becuase he states that his anti-semetic comments were made 4 years ago so everyone should forget about them. Those were racist, awful things he said and time shouldn’t make people forget. She is just saying it would be like if somebody said “oh well the Holocaust was a long time ago, so who cares anymore?” I don’t think she meant to belittle the Holocaust by that comparison, but instead to belittle Mel.

  • Once again Molls your writing disappoints me. I agree with what everyone already said- comparing the Holocaust to Mel Gibson’s DUI is absolutely ridiculous!!!!

Can we seriously re-evaluate what the hell she is doing writing on this site?! I understand that there are some devoted Molls fans, but I see an overwhelming amount of people who can’t stand her too!

It is pretty bad when I can read an article and tell that the author is Molls just by the attitude, ignorance, and typos within it.

How many complaints is it going to take to see some changes??

    • Yeah.. I’m brazilian, and I used to read all the pieces in this site, just to keep my english fresh, because it’s a really fun website. But now I just don’t read them anymore, I’m afraid it can ruin my already poor grammar knowledge! Now I just look at the articles’ titles and some of the comments!

I don’t get it.. It’s called Evil Beet, she should be the one running this thing|

      • Yes, because the typos Molls make will ruin your English grammar knowledge, but the comments will definitely enhance it! *sigh*

  • Molls- Fu– everyone who is attacking you. Mel Gibson is a piece of shit. An anti-semetic, sexist, cheating drunk, should I go on.
What a moronic forgiving nation we have become.
Anyone who pays to see a movie of MG’s is an idiot.
Typos?? Big deal. Like everyone without spellcheck types pefectly. Yea.. Right…

    • No one said that Mel Gibson ISN’T an anti-semetic, sexist, cheating drunk. What most were arguing was the fact that Molls incorrectly stated, first of all, that the Holocaust was 45 years ago, and that it was a pretty shitty to compare the drunk-driving offense of one man to the slaughter of millions. And who the hell doesn’t have spell check on their computers? And if you don’t, it’s called “having someone else check your work for mistakes before publishing it on a major website.”

      • Whit, I’m usually ultra defensive about spelling errors. Which includes phonetically correct renditions of a word, but the wrong word entirely (I recently typed profit on this site when I meant prophet…the words are completely different but sound the same). I do it myself ALL THE TIME. I suck at spelling, especially if I am just posting a comment on the web.

At work however, my spelling and grammar equal perfection. Not because I am perfect, I’m rather far from perfect, but because I whole heartedly believe in peer review. Only for the really important pieces though. Like a ROI analysis for a 150 million dollar technology enhancement that I am leading– a piece like that will go to several Sr. VPs, who will in turn support me and secure required funding and plead my project to the CEO.

I don’t think Molls has the staff necessary to provide proofreading, act as a sounding board for ideas, etc. It is just not in the nature of a gossip blog to have that kind of staff. Cut the girl some slack regarding typos and grammar. No one is perfect. Plus, the poor thing probably has to burn her mattress, sofa, and any other cloth covered piece of expensive furniture.

      • That’s cool, I can roll with that. :) I’ll lay off the grammar and spelling errors. But I just couldn’t NOT (double negative, I know, I’m sorry) comment about the “45 years” thing. It’s not in me to let that slide! :)

    • I know it seems petty to some people here, but the grammer and spelling errors just interupt the general flow of the piece and that’s disturbing to me. Also professionalism comes into play here- Molls gets paid for this. In the “real” world this wouldn’t fly, so why should it be tolerated here? Beet and Wendie never made errors. I don’t have spell check on my computer, but when it counts I run it through a free spellcheck on line ( they exist and Molls should find one). And to not check your facts- that’s just sloppy. If you take on a job, do it right.

  • Hmmm… I could spend time picking this entire write-up apart for grammar & historical background, and hate molls for it. OR I could watch the video and call Mel Gibson a douche. Because what I’m really here for is some mindless, celebrity gossip. Not to have any sort of feelings toward the writers.

If you’re here for celeb gossip you’ve got it. If you’re here for correct grammar & moral / historical correctness, once again, you’ve come to the wrong place. Or you could just keep returning, continue to complain, and come back every day as if you’re looking for something different. Sure, the Holocaust was beyond 45 years ago, and it is incomparable to Mel Gibson’s record, but is this really how you want to spend your morning? I doubt molls could give two shits less about how offended everyone is.

    • I think I’ll continue to complain about it because it’s ridiculous. No, this isn’t a website dedicated to historical accuracy, but that doesn’t mean I have to dumb myself down and NOT have an opinion about the fact that the Holocaust is in NO WAY similar to someone getting a DUI! And I honestly don’t care if Molls could give two shits. Do you think, for a second, that knowing that Molls doesn’t care would stop me from stating my opinion? In fact, I’m sure she’s pretty glad I’m throwing my opinion out there, because that generates discussion, which ups the number of posters, which will up the number of people who visit the website and click on the ads that in turn pay EB to continue running a popular website!

  • OK Whit.. I feel you. I don’t really think Molls or anyone in their right mind would compare any one person’s act to the Holocaust.. You know what I mean..

    • Mel may or may not be a douche, I don’t know him and I doubt you do either. But, what in hell’s bells does his father have to do with anything??? Who gives a rat’s ass what his poppa thinks. My poppa thinks women shouldn’t go to college, they shouldn’t work outside the home, and they should be seen (modestly dresses of course) and not heard. Well didn’t he get a surprise when I came along.

Look, everyone has their demons. Everyone. You and me included. Do people say and do stupid ass stuff when they are shit faced? Yes, they do. Are we, as a human race, beyond understanding and forgiveness? His comments were hurtful, out of line, and just plain wrong. He did apologize. He did admit he was wrong. What more do you want the man to do? I have said and done some stupid shit in my life. I’m only 34; I know I still have lots of cringe worthy, embarrassing escapades left in my life. What matters is that I recognize when I am wrong and I account for my actions. There is nothing else anyone can do.

Just as I advocate cutting Molls some slack, cut Mel some slack. And, God, how I love “sugar tits”. I secretly want to be called sugar tits by some hunking, well hung man as he lays underneath me and I take him to a whole new realm…

      • If I told you my nickname from when I played college football, you’d just think I was bragging or lying. LD

      • LD….does that stand for long dong?? Ooh la la. I don’t care what any other woman says, size does matter. It allows for sooo many more positions and flexibility. When you’re working with a small one you are basically stuck with missionary…boring.

You can call me sugar tits anytime :-)

  • How long would it take to Google “Holocaust” and find the actual dates? Even someone taking a WILD GUESS at when the Holocaust happened would know that 45 years is probably a tad off the mark! Here’s a hint, Molls – if your parents are around 50 and yet they’ve never mentioned what a bitch WWII was when they were growing up, you probably want to backdate it a little further.

Sure, I come here for celebrity gossip like everyone else, but it’s obvious that most of the readers with more than a dollop of intelligence have the same problem – difficulty enjoying posts on their favorite blog when it’s filled with factual errors, spelling errors, or is just flat-out stupid and trying way too hard to be edgy. Kelly, Sarah and Beet put together don’t get as many negative comments as Molls gets with her half-assed efforts. Beet used to run a great blog with witty posts and a real flair and skill for writing. Time to clean house.

    • Anonymous,

You took the words right out of my mouth!!! All I want is the old EB back!! I am sick of her half-assed efforts as well!!!

  • Mel & His father are both douche’s.
And Anonymous.. Go clean your own house. Or beter yet, don’t come here anymore. G-d I hate the Grammar police. Every website, EVERY has constant grammatical errors. (SEE the NY Times website sometime. You would cringe.. And they claim to be the paper of record)
This is a gossip BS fun site, state your opinion on the item, why does everyone attack this Girl. Jeez.. :-(
    Whit :-)

  • i dont think she was comparing his DUI to the holocaust, she was talking about his antisemitic rant. i don’t understand why so many of you are defending mel/feeling sorry for him or thinking this post is out of line when the guy pretty much outed himself as a jew-hater during a drunken night. in fact i’m pretty sure no one gives a shit about his DUI, it’s the words that came out of his mouth that affected his career.

what i personally can’t believe is that someone put him back in a movie.

    • Thank you! I was reading all those responses about how horrible Molls is for comparing the Holocaust to a DUI, which was completely NOT what she was doing. Like you said, when Mel got the DUI he went on an anti-semetic rant and I believe he said something along the lines that the Holocaust doesn’t exist. That is why she brought it up. He can’t get pissed that people are not over something that happened 4 years ago if he and many others are still not over something that happened 50+ years ago.

Also, get off her back about the 45 year thing. I’m sure she was estimating considering she prefaced it with a “like” as in “about 45 years ago” that’s not a wrong statement is it? 45 years is within the ballpark of the actual event. Get off your high horses already.

      • Whit-Get over it! You have commented 6 flippin’ times. Take a break, go for a walk, do something. I understand that you are passionate about the subject, but seriously.

      • Ok, I seldom leave numerous posts like this, but I have only had 2 clients today at work and I forgot my book at home, so I have nothing else to do. So there!

  • I wanted to throw in my two cents, but whoa….where to begin?!
    1. The fact the Molls can’t fact check her own stories or spell correctly is in fact dumbing down the Beet. It did NOT become a success via this sort of sloppiness. But like the other poster said..its probably done on purpose to drum up business.

    2. I think any celebrity would have been pissed off if they were asked about an event that happened four years ago. Mel was not prepared to handle it so that he could make the interviewer look stupid. The interviewer succeeded with his ‘my shit don’t stink’ tone. Plus, the interviewer had an angle…to upset Mel. The interviewer was not truly interested in addressing a sensitive issue.

    3. Just because someone is an entertainer/celebrity does not mean that their personal lives are open for discussion by anyone holding a rolling camera. If someone is going on to a show to promote a movie they should just talk about the movie. If a celebrity wants to open their life for discussion they can go on Oprah. It’s these kind of tactics that has lowered the integrity of reporting, news casts, and the like.

And Whit…I’ve had my run in with you in the past. You are not bitchy. You are just direct and don’t mince words. I don’t see you doing mindless comments or attacking. Like many of us, you are educated and just want to maintain a level of intelligence. It’s pretty sad when so many readers are more well informed than the writer. I think Molls is either playing us or she’s way out of her league.

    • You make some good points, but at what point does a scary, antisemitic rant stop being your “personal life” and start being a genuine juicy scandal? When you say it to the cop who’s arresting your ass for a DUI and you’re already a public figure, that’s when!

That being said, I’m with you that the interviewer was obviously deliberately trying to incite Mel and, oh, I dunno, turn this clip into a brief youtube sensation.

  • Okay, Molls. What is with this 45 year old Holocaust deal? I know you are smart, that is obvious from your posts. As Ricky would say, “You got some ‘splainin to do”.

I thought Mel handled himself tolerably well. What do you say when you are confronted with a “I can’t believe I got shit faced and actually said that,” comment? All you can say is I already said sorry, nothing more to talk about. Which he did. It seems to me he called the guy an asshole after he thought the interview was over and the connection terminated. If I had a dollar for every person I called an asshole after I hung up the phone I would be a rich woman. Just saying.

  • I don’t think he’s so much bananas, as he is just annoyed. Part of his contract probably requires him to go out and do these lame-assed interviews for this movie, and he’s apparently quite over discussing this part of his personal life. By this time, Gibson has been pretty much been asked and has answered all of the questions about what happened, for better or for worse. Richards is not the first one to bring this up to him since he started promoting the film. He says he regrets it and wants to move on with his life — whether anyone wants to believe that or not is their choice, but that’s his explanation – take it or leave it. If you think he’s truly a bigot and a tool, don’t patronize his work and flip the channel when he comes on. Frankly, I think this whole antisemitism accusation thing against him is exaggerated and has gotten to be quite the cry-baby whine fest, and it’s indeed old news. I don’t really think that ol’ Mel is planning to restart some kind of genocide mission or anything anytime soon. If people are really going to be concerned about bigots and racists, they should focus more on what’s going on in some other parts of the world where it’s still resulting in mass genocide even today (think Darfur), and not what some movie actor that was ranting about while he was fully shitfaced.

    • for some reason anti semitism always seems to be the thing people are willing to just let roll off their shoulders. it’s not okay. if he had said gay people, black people, mexicans, muslims, mormons or basically anything else, no one would be defending him right now and he certainly wouldn’t be on a publicity tour.

      • I’m just going to play devil’s advocate here.

What about all the millions of ordinary German citizens who either reveled in kicking hard working Jewish families in the street to take their homes, possessions, and lives from them, or the countless millions of other German citizens who stood silently by and allowed humans to be branded with a star, allowed humans to be treated as sub-human, allowed family businesses to be burned to the ground, and allowed a whole ethnicity of people to be packed into trains and sent to their death. Do you think it is acceptable to forgive them? The world at large did. What the citizens of Germany did was far worse than Mel’s shit faced rant. Yet, we forgave Germany. You can’t find it in your heart to forgive Mel?

The world is so full of double standards. I’m not condoning Mel’s rant. I’m saying he admitted he was wrong. He admitted that his alcoholism played a huge part in his debacle. He apologized and asked for forgiveness. That is all any man or woman can do. Do you want the man to kill himself or something? What do you want him to do????

  • Good grief!

The 45 year thing was a mistake – probably because Molls knows that is the time period for WWII – as in, 1945. You all know she can subtract. It was a mistake. I know you all don’t know what that is….

And Mel Gibson is a holocaust denier, hence her comment. She was not comparing the holocaust to a DUI. Don’t be silly.

Bring it down from code red. It will make you appear to be older than you no doubt are.

  • sal…that’s not necessarily true. But what are the statute of limitations on holding a grudge? The incident happened four years ago. Mel admitted he was wrong and appologized. He struggles with substance abuse and has adult ADD. He was out of making movies all that time trying to address his personal life. Why is it that people get personally involved with celebrity lives and base movie watching on the celebrities personal conduct and yet people don’t seem to care as much about the conduct of companies who manufacture products they use who do greater harm on a global level. We are all brainwashed, looking the wrong way and for too long. Let’s all be obsessed with Mel. There will be no energy to wonder why our government has a ban on gays in the military, won’t recognize gay marriage, allows american companies owned by foreigners to fund our elections, gave billions to banks, credit card companies, and the auto industry…all the while tax payers can’t afford groceries, are losing their homes and get decent medical care. I know this site is about celebrities and gossip. It’s fun and entertaining. But just because some people choose to no longer attack Mel for his past actions, doesn’t mean that they don’t care about prejudiced behavior. You know…don’t try to kill a fly with a hammer.

    • no one is obsessing about mel. this is a comment thread ABOUT mel. so, you know. and again, he went on an anti semitic rant 4 years ago. sorry that’s just not something you live down. maybe you aren’t part of a minority, or part of a group of people who have been blamed and persecuted their whole lives. so for me, maybe it’s a little more personal. mel gibson basically blamed me and my family for all the wars in the world. and i’m not about to forgive him.

and i’m well aware of all the other political REAL ISSUES in the world. and if i wanted to discuss them i’d be on huffingtonpost’s comments right now, and not evilbeet.

      • Every religion ever made up by man has been persecuted, killed, tortured, and maimed for their beliefs. That is a fact. The Holocaust is one of the more recent events and makes it all that much more horrible and painful. In no way way am I playing down the Holocaust. In no way. It is a dark stain on humanity’s soul.

Before the Christians overtook Gael (modern day Ireland) and Britannia 1,500 years ago, the people who worshiped their pagan gods were burned, murdered, and killed for practicing their faith by the hundreds of thousands. That may not seem like a lot of people, but 1,500 years ago, that was pretty much every native inhabitant in the isles. Their faith was wiped out of existence. Persecuted until no one, not one person, was left to practice their rights and rituals. But, those people may not count for you because they are not Jewish and don’t believe in your god.

Forgiveness. You have to have the ability to forgive others for their ignorance. Without forgiveness, humanity would have died off long ago.

  • Sal…I am sorry Mel struck a bitter cord in you. If your heritage runs that deep, I can understand. But the challenge of outdoing your nemises is to forgive them and live a better life than them. Mel could care less perhaps. Only you are upset. Not good for you. You basicallly take on the darkness Mel spewed that one drunken night. Let it go. Forgive Mel for being close minded and ignorant. You sound like a decent person. Don’t make him so important that he appears to have so much influence upon how you feel. But I understand your need to post what you think about it all.

And To Jen: leave Whit alone…Whit is cool. And how on earth do you know how many posts Whit has done unless you as well have been on here all day too on and off. I’m bored today. So here I am. Why do you care? Can’t everyone play nice?

    Lisa…right on!!

Djinn…you are right too. It takes huge courage to march to your own beat in a place like Hollywood. I at least respect Mel for that much. I think he’s very misguided though about the Holocost. I think his drunken escapade was a bit of truth serum which let out an ugly side.

I don’t really care that much about Mel in terms of what he thinks anyway. I am at home today doing house work and posting now and them is a fun break. That doesn’t mean I don’t care about the Holocost and all the other tragedies. But the Holocost is physically over. America stepped in and sacrificed to make that happen. The best way to never repeat history is to learn from its lessons. In my limited understanding of it all….for me it is to live without fear, live in peace and tollerance. Something Hitler and many Germans couldn’t do apparently or else the Holocost never would have happened.

  • Sal..I may not be part of a minority in your book, but I did once work for a jewish man for two years. He was very condescending and made fun of me (not to mention paid me squat, yet gave me a ton of responsibility). He made it clear how much more worthy he was as a human because of his heritage. I put up with it because I know my worth. Mental abuse counts for something. And its especially distressing when you desperately need the job to pay rent and bills. I found it incredibly ironic that a Jewish man would be so hurtful to an American whose own relatives fought to free ‘his people’. He was a spoiled person, had tones of money, and thought he was above everyone. See, the thing is, regardless of race/religion, we all experience the dark side of someone. Our experiences form our feelings. I don’t hate Jewish people, but for two years I learned very quickly that many Jewish people can be condescending, snotty, and down right rude to anyone who isn’t a pure Jew (he often brought his friends, children, wife, and other relatives to work who treated me no different). I eventually quit when I found something better.

And yes, since I am a woman, I have been mistreated by men. Women in almost every corner of the world are devalued, mistreated, abused, and discarded regardless of race or religion. I’ve had to deal with bosses that made inappropriate sexual advances towards me. When I was 20 years old I was sexually assualted by a scum bag in college who thought a passed out girl was a cheap thrill (I was in the supposed safety of my own room and he broke in). Had a boyfriend who thought beating me up was ok since he was abused. I’ve been paid less than men, yet done more work. The list is endless. Do I hate men or Jewish people for that matter. No. I take people as individuals. I only held grudges until I grew up and realized how much of a waste of time hating anyone actually is.
