Alexa Ray Joel Wants To Help You With Your Heartbreak-Related Depression

Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley’s daughter Alexa Ray Joel tried to kill herself last month after a break up and now she wants to make sure that you don’t do the same. Alexa, a singer, took to her Facebook blog (Ugh! Just get a Tumblr! Facebook blog?! How tacky!) to tell her fans that not only is she fine, but that she’s come out on the other side of her depression wanting to help other girls who might be feeling the way she did when she swallowed a few too many pills. She’s even got a special name for it: Heartbreak-Related Depression.

From Alexa’s blog:

I have many exciting new developments for the New Year…most importantly, to help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression. Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition that often gets ‘swept under the carpet.’ I hope to bring this topic more to light.

I’m even going back to school for Psychology in hopes to learn more about this and many other afflictions that many of us have had to face. After all, there’s nothing more fascinating than the human mind and its respective conditions

Where do I begin? Heartbreak-Related Depression? Damn. What about the people who are already depressed because of their socioeconomic status and then they get heartbroken? I’m thinking that there’s something kind of frivolous about dedicating time to studying this. Sounds to me like she wants to go to vet school so she can play with puppies or something. Secondly, there are a lot of things more fascinating than the human mind, let’s not be so self-involved. Outer space! Dinosaurs! Religion! Somebody go sign this girl up to work a few shifts at the homeless shelter or something so she can touch the ground.

Hey! I’m glad she’s feeling better, but let’s not over indulge a 24 year old experiencing the same thing we all do. She can spend 10 years in school learning about it, but at the end of the day she’s going to find out that the only way to cure a broken heart is ice cream, tears and random dick. Just sayin’!

  • Holy freakin ignorant post from someone who obviously has no idea what they are talking about.

Heartbreak-related depression is a very real thing. “Ice cream, tears and a random dick” will not do the trick. Do you advise other depressed people to just cheer up?

Do a little research before posting something that makes you look like such an imbecile.

    • I really have no idea what it is with commentors on this website… Between the grammar and spelling police and people who freak out about how things just aren’t taken seriously enough on a CELEBRITY GOSSIP website – sheesh.

I’ve always found “ice cream, tears and random dick” surprisingly effective for a lot of ailments. :)

    • you know what? I have suffered from depression, I’m currently nursing a depressed-broken heart and I agree with Molls ten fold. you just gotta get through it and to me, tears and ice cream (and thanks Christ for the random dick) are much healthier ways to go about getting though a rough spot than trying to kill yourself. This wasn’t about Molls being ignorant, this post is about keeping celebrities responsible for their actions when no one else will. I feel for this chick, we’re both going though a tough time as is most of the world, but just because her over-privileged life has a hiccup, doesn’t mean she should take herself out of it. people need to be grounded. I appreciate Molls’ brass balls approach to life. she has a tough skin and a hell of a sense of humor. maybe you should try to keep up.

    • you sound like a dumbass. it’s not a “real thing” at all. the only type of depression that is a real, clinical diagnosis is called major depressive disorder. i am so sick of our society taking prozac and other pills or saying they are ‘clinically depressed’ because they are sad over shit like their boyfriends dumping them, their dog dying, etc. it would be anything BUT normal if they weren’t sad, it’s a very good thing that they are. medicine is not a cure all. and people need to suck it up and not attempt suicide over heartbreak.

if she had a long history of major depression, it would be more understandable that a break up would set her off. but yeah.. “heartbreak related depression” = fail.

and i’ve been there, done that regarding psych pills, have been in hospitals, etc and have struggled with serious depression myself. it wasn’t just me being sad because my boyfriend broke up with me. clinical depression goes much deeper than that.

      • “heartbreak related depression” = fail?

just because someone’s depression may be related to heartbreak, does not mean it’s any less valid than any other form of depression.

      • I think the point she was making is that situational sadness is not depression.
It’s being sad about something sad that just happened. Depression is something else altogether.

      • i totally agree. depression is a state of mind… but not just for a couple of days because someone broke up with you or your dog died. some people have it for months, years before they get help.

if it had been a year since her boyfriend dumped her and she was still depressed about it; i would agree.

      • i realize that, but i do also acknowledge that real depression can be related to a situation such as heartbreak. however, her recovery was a little quick and that is rather suspicious. i guess i am saying just because alexa’s situation may be trivializing heartbreak related depression, let’s not scoff because it can be a very real thing. especially when your husband of 30 years and father of your kids up and leaves you out of the blue. something like that can truly trigger a depression.

    • Stephanie, my boyfriend of two years broke up with me on the phone like, two months ago. I totally understand how much heartbreak hurts. HOWEVER, I don’t think it’s something that can be clinically diagnosed or treated.

      • Right on Molls! I love it when a woman doesn’t go for that crybaby bullshit most guys talk about. I’d say Alexa has other issues that she hasn’t resolved yet. Like looking like her father.

    • Get the fuck over yourself, you moron. What are you, fifteen? Grow up some over the next ten years and then your opinion might be taken seriously.

  • So, a random dick will do the trick, you’re funny and stupid all rolled into one Molls. Thanks for the chuckle.

  • Somehow I have a hard time believing someone who tried to kill themselves 30 days ago has already “come out of the other side” of their depression.

    • She thinks taking a handful of homeopathic pills is a suicide attempt, so I’m not surprised she thinks she on “the other side” of her “depression.”

  • so she thinks the human mind is the most interesting thing…and i agree with her. and honeslty, whats wrong with this statement? some ppl just have to make fun of anything.

  • I’d totally fuck this chick to get near her mother but then break up with her when I couldn’t get in Brinkleys pants.

  • Well I guess that was she has is “her kind” of depression

Just like the pills she took, like fucking vitamins/herbals supplements, were “her kind” of suicide attempt

this whole thing is pathetic. real depression isn’t a joke… and it’s definitely not caused by something like a break up. Alexa isn’t helping shit. What an idiot. She’s pathetic and should work with doctors to figure out why she felt the urge to act out so dramatically, like a little child, when her boyfriend dumped her. I would take her more seriously if she didn’t try to OD off of fucking vitamins. UGH.

  • Why the ridiculously rude post Molls? I am excited and proud of Alexa for facing what’s going on in her life and trying to do something about it while also helping others. Why do you need to turn it into something so rude and negative. I know you were trying to be funny, but that ice cream and dick joke was just untasteful, crude even. There are times for sex jokes; this wasn’t one of them.

  • I dunno, it’s something to look in to, but why not start an organization or outreach group for women going through this before making big statements. I really could have benefited from something like that instead of turning into drugs, alcohol, and abusive dick.

  • No one goes off the deep end over a man unless they have ZERO self esteem or a borderline personality. This sounds like a cover up, she’s avoiding the real issue probably out of shame or fear of public embarassment by gossip bloggers.

  • loves this post. you crack me up, and i’m afraid you are also spot on here

i wish her the best and all, but really? i mean, really.
    whatev

    anyways, stay awesome.

  • Found the random dick on new years eve….twice! and it does help molls, you’re right. but before you take out a prescription for random dick you really do need to get yourself in check. my ex and i broke up in september and i was not ok for a while. perhaps its true that heartbreak-related depression may not require clinical treatment (as in medication) but i think that sometimes it can be serious enough that counselling should become a possibility.

I think it’s incredibly unfair for people to overlook the effects of a breakup. I was lucky enough to get through it with my head in check and both feet on the ground but I’ve known girls who weren’t so lucky. Two years ago a girl on our campus comitted suicide that was related to a breakup. Some people just need to talk to someone.

And I’m not going to shit on the girl for wanting to go back to school and get an EDUCATION. Shouldn’t we be happy about this? Don’t we all agree that most celebrities should go to school? Don’t piss on her for wanting to better her life and don’t label her goals as frivolous. At least she’s trying to take a bad thing in her life and flip it around.

Oh and Elizabeth? This is the only time I will ever say something uncouth…but you are a fucking idiot. Many different types of depression exist. Depression is a SYMPTOM of almost all mental disorders, including Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality disorder. As someone who has friends suffering from both I find our remarks ignorant and uneducated. Do some fact checking before you decide to give us your made up version of the encyclopedia of mental health.

  • Her boyfriend dumped her before and she stupidly took him back, WOMEN STOP BEING DOOR MATS! When a man tells you what he is, listen for God’s sake! This girl does not have a good role model in her mother either, Christie has been married four times and has kids by all these men, Alexa can’t look up to her mother she is not a good example and has problems of her own! Toughen up Alexa Life is tough even when you have a lot of money, wait until your loved ones pass on, or you find out you have cancer, or some other horrible thing that life hands you, NO MAN IS WORTH YOUR LIFE EVER!! Buck up, put on your BIG GIRL panties and deal with it!!

  • Maybe Billy Joel would make music again if his daughter killed herself. Win, win for everyone. Every time I see Alexa Ray alive, I want to play t-ball with her skinny vapid head.

  • She could have underlying clinical depression and it was triggered by a bad breakup. Breakups can be extremely traumatic, especially if you already have problems staying afloat. Antidepressants have saved lives thanks to some much needed serotonin pumping through certain sensitive individuals’ brains. Maybe Alexa is just putting the wrong label on what she is trying to say- aka heartbreak triggered underlying depression.
