Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Hey Team. Help Me Do My Job. (And Help ABC Do Theirs Too.)

samwho2_d

Hi guys!

You know I don’t front with y’all (I put the apostrophe in the right place so BOW THE FUCK DOWN all y’all who always call me out on that) so I’m gonna be straight-up: I’m kind of fucked.

Let me start from the beginning.

I’m running a business here. Businesses need revenue, and in my case I generate revenue when RealNetworks sells ad sponsorships for this adorable website we all love so much. Sometimes I am a little bit involved in the pitching process of these sponsorships and usually I stay as far away from it as humanly possible. This is easy because the ad sales team sits on the other side of my floor, and it’s been proven that coworkers who sit more than 100 feet away from each other may as well be located in different states for how often they’ll communicate. This is not to say I don’t love the ad sales team, because I do. I went golfing a couple weeks ago with Staci from ad sales.

I had a point here.

Oh yes. They sold a network-wide sponsorship for ABC’s TV on DVD and they’d like editorial pieces to be written by, ya know, me, about the following shows: Scrubs, Samantha Who, Desperate Housewives, and Brothers & Sisters. They would like them on the site by Tuesday evening. Here’s the issue: I watch none of these shows, and there’s really no elegant way to integrate these editorials into this blog without it being SUPER OBVIOUS that it’s sponsored, so I’m not going to try, because I think you guys are smarter than that. (And, to be honest, when you guys call me out on a piece being sponsored, you’re wrong 99.9% of the time. I rave about products when I love them, not when someone pays me. When it’s sponsored, I tell you.)

I’m getting closer to the point: I think this whole thing would work a lot better if you guys would please help out and let me use your opinions instead of mine for once. I know there are people in this audience who watch all those shows religiously. For each of these shows, I’d like to put together a Top 5 Reasons to Watch. I actually think you guys will be really, really funny about this — I’m giving you total permission to be as snarky or serious as you like. Please let me know in the comments (or via email — evilbeet@gmail.com) which show you’re referencing and what you think is a good reason (or five!) to watch the most recent seasons. The best/funniest/truest will be posted on the site by Tuesday evening. Have fun with this and PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

  • That’s a great way to solve your problem beet cuz you know your AW fans want as much input as possible. I have never seen any of these shows so I can’t help. You golf????

    • Nobody has seen these shows and is why ABC is bottom of the ratings. Poor Disney is going broke.

      • I have not seen a single episode of any of these shows except Scrubs and I actually felt stupider for having watched that one.

      • I Love hearing people like Donkey Punch talk like they actually watch anything other than SCTV reruns. The only good TV character to come out of Canada was Dudley Doright.

  • Samantha Who:

The top 5 reasons to buy and watch Season 2:

    5. It’s my last chance, they cancelled the show! Although why I’d watch it when they’re saying it isn’t good enough to continue… I will assume the reason is monetary. But I need a matching set, I’m compulsive in that way. I own Season 1.
    4. That dude that plays her mentally abused boyfriend is a hottie! Every show he’s on gets yanked fast.. (think: ‘What About Brian’). A moment of pity for him, please! Nobody appreciates him. He needs me to watch him!
    3. Sookie! I soooo miss Sookie from ‘Gilmore Girls’, and as Samantha’s plus-sized friend she is a sweet comic relief. TV needs more plus-sized women with charm!
    2. Jean Smart! She won an Emmy Award, for pete’s sakes. How can they cancel a show with award winning actresses?
    1. Christina Applegate totally ROCKS! She’s funny and made an awesome comeback after dealing with cancer. It’s just cruel to make her lose both her breasts AND her show in the same year. Tsk tsk!

  • Brothers&Sisters

    1. That family is so dysfunctional in so many ways, it makes you feel kinda okay with your family. In fact, it makes you think your family might actually be normal.

    2. Kitty’s (Calista Flockgeart) character is so….so Ally McBeal in her stuttering, stammering passionate way. I miss Ally McBeal. Therefore, Kitty is a good replacement.

    3. It promotes gay marriage!

    4. It’s real, it’s honest, it isn’t glammed-up, unrealistic bullshit

  • Brothers&Sisters

    1. That family is so dysfunctional, it makes you feel kinda okay about your own family. In fact, it makes you feel your family might actually be normal.

    2. Kitty’s (Calista Flockheart) character is so Ally McBeal in that stammering, stuttering passionate way. I miss Ally McBeal. Therefore, Kitty is a good replacement.

    3. It promotes gay marriage!

    4. It’s real, it’s honest, it isn’t that glammed-up crap that we’re fed constantly.

  • Top 5 reasons to watch scrubs
    1) There’s nothing else like it
    2) Despite some people saying it got worse in the later seasons, there is no denying that it is still an original, fresh piece of work
    3) It’s funny, both obviously and subtley
    4) Despite the fact that it’s a comedy show, it’s now all shallow and up in the air. Real issues are dealt with, it makes you think. I feel that’s probably why some people say it’s gotten worse, but I think it makes the show even better
    5)Zach Braff

  • Beet, you can watch all those shows online and for free on ninjavideo.net. its really good quality too…

  • Ok, I’ll do desperate housewives since noone else has yet. (And for the record, I watch all those shows. They’re great.)

    1. Since there’s so many different women, it has a lot of different storylines and its so intresting and captivating. I like that its not just about one person(s). There’s all the women, then their kids and their husband or boyfriends. I love that there’s so much going on, so even if you don’t like one of the storylines, there’s at least 2 or 3 other ones.

    2. There’s always at least 2 or 3 really attractive guy on the show at one point or another.

    3. Eva Longoria. Even as a straight women, I find her hot. And she plays Gabby perfectly. Also, I love how awkward Susan (Teri Hatcher’s character) is.

    4. Recently, the storylines have gotten really intense and its not just about stupid jealousy stuff. People getting killed, teenage boys sleeping with grown women…

    5. The gay next door neighbors. They just so delicous. I love them, and Lee looks JUST like a gay guy I work with.

  • Top 5 reasons to watch Samantha Who:

    1) Christina Applegate is hilarious. She loses her memory and when she has flashbacks she is shocked at what a total bitch she is…

    2) Jennifer Espisito (Bradley Cooper’s ex) Plays one of her best friends Andrea who missed the old nasty bitchy Sam…and also acts like the old Sam…sort of like the devil on her shoulder.

    3) Melissa McCarthy plays Dena, Samantha’s childhood friend who didn’t talk to her much when she was this bitch, but now she does. and she is a nice and nutty as Andrea is bitchy. Between having both best friends, there are some really funny moments.

    4) It’s laugh out loud funny when Dena comes into the scene with anything from her weird obsession with her dogs to basically anything.

    5) It’s a sleeper show. It’s good. and as the episodes go on, it’ gets funnier and it’s a nice mindless show that also has some cheesy lessons in it.

  • Top Five Reasons to Watch Scrubs:

    1. It is a great show compared to any of the other medical shows out there, it really has a realistic feel that gets you attached to the characters. They don’t exaggerate what goes on like the other shows, rather, they are simple and honest with what could really happen in the hospital and in real life.

    2. The characters are well balanced. You have J.D. and Turk as the regular dose of comedic relief with the side characters that can steal the spot light like Ted the lawyer and the Janitor. Amongst that you also have the serious doctor, Dr. Cox, who can be funny at times with his angry on-again-off-again-wife. The main characters love interest, Elliot, who is a fun blond that shows that any woman can get a great job and be fun at the same time. Also, Turk’s future wife in the later seasons, who is head nurse and shows that women can be powerful over anyone, especially men no matter what position they are.

    3. The comedy thrown through out the show gives you a sigh of relief that helps you escape the real world. It brings a smile to your face and makes you see the truth of life in a fun aspect. While it brings a serious tone that shows true issues that can really happen no matter how fun something gets. It gives you that tinge of reality while the escape you need.

    4. The music. I have watched many, many shows and I must say, this show has the best music choices for the scenes that require music. I know there are a lot of avid music listeners out there and you’ll definitely love the music they put into the show. You can be watching a scene and a song you would have never thought to use for said scene will start playing and you can’t help but enjoy how it actually meshes so well with the show. Believe me, you’re going to love it.

    and lastly…

    5. You get to grow with the characters. Compared to any other medical show or such, the characters don’t really change, they producers, directors, etc, they try to keep the characters the same. But in Scrubs, you get to see them grow as young adults fresh out of medical school, trying to identity themselves, what love is, what death is. You get to see their personalities change just like everyone should in real life. See them get married, have children, become a different person while keeping the same fun persona since episode one.

  • hehe i adore this site sooo…

Top 5 reasons to watch.. Brothers and Sisters

    5. This show has an allstar cast.. Sally Fields Calysta Flockheart and more! Some great talent that shows off the writer skills emenesly.

    4. The poltics of this show is on edge and very up to date thru the eyes of a family with diffrent opnions and views and the bonds that keep it stable.

    3. The hemosexual world is well voiced in this show. And marriage is promoted.(sorry tad copycat)

    2. Back to the writers there has been quotes from this show I have refrenced back to.. Something as small as glass jumps.. when it breaks glass is dangerous cause its not confined to the area of the accident it jumps. Maybe one of these things you have to watch to get my point. But its nice to have relatable things to draw from a tv show. Even if this seems so small..

    1. Its about a family that like everyone else has its problems BIG HUGE and small and yet they keep going. From a brother who came from the war to a brother who is gay to a sister whose marriage has fallen apart and more. If you find in life your a lonely person.. This show helps fill that void and gives u a semibreak from such feelings.

(btw would have been better if Lost was on the list that show I adore!!!) Adore you Beet keep up the great work!

  • A couple of reasons for watching Scrubs:

    1. Just like Rob Lowe said in Wayne’s World, “it shows that there can be true love between two heterosexual men in a completely platonic relationship”!

    2. After all of these years Dr. Cox still calls JD by girl names and I don’t think he’s repeated one.

    3. I REALLY want to find out what Janitor’s name is.

    4. Hoping Ted will FINALLY get a girl.

I know it’s four but it’s early. That’s all I’ve got for now!

  • Did you even try explaining to ABC that you, personally, aren’t in the business of writing about anything other than Jon Gosselin, Lindsay Lohan or yourself? The nerve of them!

  • Top Five Reasons to Watch Brothers & Sisters

    1. Alcohol-fueled mayhem. Family dinners, get togethers and celebrations wouldn’t be complete with out it.

    2. DYB moments. (Damn You Berlanti. *Shakes fist*) It never fails, his shows always kill me.

    3. Eye Candy; Rob Lowe. Dave Annable. Rob Lowe. Matthew Rhys. Enough said.

    4. Scotty & Kevin. I used to detest Scotty, but now his relationship with Kevin is one of the greatest things about the show.

    5. Sibling shenanigans. Given the title of the show, this is prtty much expected. But, seriously, you have no idea how awesome this is until you see it for yourself. So watch.

  • Scrubs is the bomb, for real! I love J.D. and Brown Bear and Carla but they need to stop having so many children. Oh yeah, check out Rowdie, the stuffed dead dog. He gets around more than you think.

  • Well… the only show out of that list I get to catch occasionally anymore is Scrubs, and I will give you one really good reason to watch it since I am actually qualified for this opinion, for once in my life. I am a medical student rotating in the hospital and Season 1 is exactly what it is like to be a new resident at a hospital, the attendings do really treat you like a stinky pile of garbage ( a really stupid one). The rest of the seasons tend to wander a little bit but still, a lot of those medical shenanigans really happen and its like real life but with better looking people and better dialogue.

  • can we also have a top 5 reasons to do your own job? unless you plan on giving us a cut for writing these reasons for you…

  • Top 5 Reasons To Watch Samantha Who?

    1. It’s sweet
    2. It’s sugarfree
    3. It’s Emmy-Award winning
    4. Barry Watson is in it.That’s right, the cute guy from “Seventh Heaven”.Do you REALLY need more convincing?
    5. It’s perfect for you if you opt for a show that leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling at the end.

  • “Samantha Who” has been credited with clever and imaginative writing and well as exceptionally good acting. However, the best reason (for me) to watch it is just for the opportunity to watch Christina Applegate. She doesn’t have to do anything, or, say anything. All that she has to do is just stand there and let the average red-blooded American male fantasize about what he would like to do with her (either pre, or, post, breast cancer and after her reconstructive surgery.) She is still a FOX! My particular fantasy involves my taking her away to a deserted, tropical island and immediately burning all of her clothes…
