Today's Evil Beet Gossip

It’s the Economy, Leo!

Leonardo DiCaprio in April of 2009

I find this particularly ironic since I saw a trailer for this movie when I went to see District 9 today. (Incidentally, I have never seen more people walk out of the theater during the first 20 minutes of a film than during District 9. But I digress…)

The release date of Leonardo DiCaprio’s new thriller, Shutter Island, has been pushed back from October of this year to February of 2010. Leo was getting ready to head out and promote the Scorsese film when the Paramount pulled the plug.

Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey says, “Our 2009 slate was green-lit in a very different economic climate and as a result we must remain flexible and willing to recalibrate and adapt to a changing environment.

“Leonardo DiCaprio is among the most talented actors working today, and Martin Scorsese is not just one of the world’s most significant filmmakers, but also a personal friend. Following a highly successful 2009, we have every confidence that Shutter Island is a great anchor to lead off our 2010 slate and the shift in date is the best decision for the film (and) the studio.”

Paramount has had some huge Summer box office successes this year with Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Horrible Movie, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. But huge Summer blockbusters require equally huge budgets, and the studio has spent a pretty penny promoting them.

  • District 9 was great! I can’t believe you had that many walk outs.

Anyway, Shutter Island looks pretty interesting. The book is by Dennis Lehane and I’m curious to see Marty’s take on a horror type film (I don’t count Cape Fear since that was a remake of an already decent film).

  • I’m sure that Leo has already received his paycheck for gazillions. He can bide his time between now and the big premiere by traipsing around the world with his latest supermodel girlfriend.

  • I’ve only heard great things about District 9, hmm…maybe the beginning was slow? I have yet to see it though.

  • I guess the start of District 9 was a little slow but overall it was such an amazing movie. Those ppl must be idiots

  • Yeah District 9 was great. Walking out for lack of action makes no sense as you can tell something is on the way and they show spaceship and aliens at that point……by the way Sharlto Copely the S. African film maker who plays the lead role in this is awesome as a nerdy bureaucrat who gets sucked in.

The trailer for Shutter Island looked great and I can’t stand DiCaprio as a rule so I can only assume the movie is being bumped for logistical reasons and not for reworking even if that pretty well kills any Oscar chances.

  • Why do you think so many walked out of District 9? It’s an unconventional style of movie, but I kinda liked it. Then again I like SciFi in general.

  • Cool, I saw the trailer when I watched District 9 yesterday. I thought the 1st 20 minutes were better than the rest of the movie. Those people who walked out were probably waiting for another movie to start.
The trailer for Shutter Island didn’t really tell me much about the movie except that there is a lot of scares. I had no idea M.S. was directing Leo in a movie such as this. How can it be bad?

  • i cant believe that that many people walked out, i just saw it today and it was the best movie I’ve ever seen. i loved it, there was nothing wrong with the beginning i guess they just thought that that’s what the movie would be like for the entire duration which it wasn’t

  • Everyone I’ve talked to that’s seen District 9 loved it, then again I hang out with a bunch of nerds who love scifi. Nonetheless it was unconventional and original and a lot of people can’t handle that. I personally thought it was the best movie I’ve seen this summer and so did my boyfriend, we both had big smiles leaving the theater.
Anyways, Leo is hot and always will be, ever since Aviator he can do no wrong.

  • Wait, people walked out of District 9 yet they didn’t walk out of Transformers: Revenge of Michael Bay? Can someone explain this to me?

  • —so, I got it in the wrong place. Throw me in jail. —–It’s near morning & I’m zapped.
