Kelly wrote this weekend about how Jessica Biel is going to sing in her new film, Easy Virtue. Now we have video of her recording the track, “Mad About the Boy.”

Thoughts?

  1. Lindy says:

Wow she really can sing. I didnt know she could.

  2. Anna says:

    Yeah, that was… good. What?

  3. allyouneedislove says:

    yes, she actually can sing.
she does have a nice lower register but there just seems to be a dimension missing. It’s not unique in any way.

  4. Jinxy says:

She’s not terrible, but average – just like her acting. Could she do a musical, sure, but is there any money to be made from doing a musical? No. She’ll have an average career until she hits her mid 30′s and then no career. Too much talent in her age group for her to have something that lasts, that’s when parts for women traditionally thin out.

    • Chris K says:

Average means what? No better, no worse than the status quo? Which is how it got to be called ‘average’? Cite references for women above 35 having no role options, because it seems to me there are plenty.

  5. Melissa says:

She’s not actually laying it down in that video. It’s just a music vid… I wonder how much technology went into making her vibrato so clean and accentuated.

    • Harriet Meadow says:

How sad that we live in a society where if someone sounds good singing we assume that some sort of “technology” went into it. You do know that some people can actually sing, right? And that we shouldn’t be surprised that someone who got her start in Musical Theater would be one of those people?

      • Melissa says:

I didn’t assume anything, Harriet. I was simply saying that the video that’s being displayed is not of her actually singing and laying down the track. It’s just a music video. And yes, in this day and age, a TON of “artists” have electronic help cleaning up their stuff. Do refrain from using blanket statements. They make you look ignorant.

      • H says:

Melissa, your comment about ‘blanket statements’ would be better applied to your own comments.

      • Melissa says:

Why? I didn’t, nor do I use blanket statements. I loathe them.

  6. Sophie says:

Yeah, she’s a perfectly competent singer, but nothing too special.

By the way, didn’t Easy Virtue already come out (at least in the UK) ages ago? I seem to recall loads of trailers for it, and it basically being one of those period films that portray American women as sluts who have more fun and somehow manage to embody some kind of female empowerment, and Brit women as frigid prudes who would never dream of taking their clothes off for sex. That kind of thing; you know, stereotyping from which nobody really benefits.

    • Emilia says:

I’ve been thinking this too! It was around last autumn, no? I swear there were lots of trailers for it. But also, I almost think I didn’t notice Jessica Biel was in it. And yes, the stereotyping in the trailers was quite irritating. Completely agreed.

      Here we go: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808244/

      7th November 2008.

  7. Kelly says:

I’d be super psyched to be able to sing that well.

  8. Kaitlyn says:

I agree, nothing too spectacular. She doesn’t seem to have a much of a range, though. I love that “was that ok?” at the end… as if she had just sung that whole song like that in one take. Made me chuckle.

  9. Priscilla says:

    voice: B-
    video: F

  10. Rachel says:

Meh, good but nothing special. Missing that “X factor” quality that would make me want to listen to more of her.

  11. buzzardpancake says:

That’s how I feel about every performer from every musical! lol

  12. wurly says:

I like it and I’m surprised…She can actually sing…I would like to talk about he fact how I can not stand her or any of the movies she played in but…when someone does something well, it needs to be said.
Now excuse me, while I am going to kill myself.

  13. holly says:

bland, just like her acting and her personality.

  14. Sarah says:

I have to admit, probably to the chagrin of a lot of readers: I actually love Jessica Biel.

  15. YoMomma says:

I liked it. Would like to see her sing with Timberlake. She really is quite beautiful.

  16. Binx says:

Her voice is boring…but then again so is she.

  17. slipchot says:

It merits no more than an (admittedly biased) ‘meh.’

  18. Abbi says:

10,000 times better than Heidi Montag (pratt?)

  19. sam says:

the ‘accent’ she’s singing in is really annoying

  20. john b says:

Maybe she should try out for American Idol next season. lol. ;)
She fits the criteria….no current record contract, has never sold a million albums, and is under age 28……I’m half joking, but……..

  21. vengefulblonde says:

Not sure know how she’ll do in Guys & Dolls… she doesn’t have the right register for Sarah Brown… her voice is “meh.” Although she does piss me off, she is a lot better than most actresses that desperately try to pull the singing card (Taylor Momsen, Leighton Meester, Scarlett Johansson.)

  22. Dee Cee says:

She needs to squeek Justin’s ‘Cry me a river’ before I give her a little side eye wink of approval.,

  23. Erica says:

As much as it pains me to say this (and believe me, I say this through gritted teeth), she doesn’t suck. She’s actually pretty good.

  24. pebobryson says:

she’s good enough to be in a theme park show!

  25. Stravu9 says:

    She is STRICTLY an amatuer.
She has no range, vapid tone quality.
She sounds like her phrasing was coached by a drag performer.
I have heard she is doing Sarah Brown in “Guys & Dolls” and I am here to tell you there is no way in’ell she can pull off the range of that role!
Kim Bassinger actually could sing, not that it helped her any, but check out “The Marrying Man”.
And you shouldn’t knock the kids in theme park shows. They are working live without “pitch correction” technology so heavily used today.
