Ben Stiller and Spider Monkeys Accomplish What John Connor Couldn’t

When I went to see the new Star Trek movie I had to sit through a preview for another Night at the Museum movie while wondering why in the hell anyone would make another Night at the Museum movie. It’s like the time I saw a DVD of Taxi 4 sitting on the shelf in Blockbuster– enough people loved Taxis 1 through 3 to warrant making a fourth one.

Likewise, enough people enjoyed Night at the Museum to warrant making a sequel. The latest incarnation, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, has the same number of Ben Stillers and twice as many monkeys, which should make it twice as humorous and enjoyable as the last Museum movie, which is still not at all enjoyable or funny because nothing doubled is still nothing.

Most of America, it seems, does not agree with me. This weekend, monkeys slapping Ben Stiller in the face beat out Christian Bale screaming at staffers as Night at the Museum took in $53.5 million in box office sales compared to Terminator: Salvation‘s $43 million.

Say what you want about how Museum appeals to a wider audience, is showing in IMAX theaters, and is the only comedy released in recent weeks, which means it’s not splitting ticket sales with another blockbuster in its genre the way Terminator may be with Star Trek. Your logical arguments mean nothing to me. All I know is that people would rather see Ben Stiller getting slapped in stereo by spider monkeys than watch the latest installment of a classic Scifi series.

Then again, maybe if the last Terminator movie hadn’t been worse than the first Museum movie, there would have been a different result.

  • Ummm either one of the Night at the Museums is still funnier than you…

Plus, Terminator and StarTrek are lame…no matter what hot guys you put in those movies

  • I saw Night at the Museum last night and really liked it. It was pretty funny. The scene with Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill had me really lol! It’s a good family movie.

  • I think the Museum Movies are adorable. Yeah, they have all the typical stupid things that are basically just to make kids laugh, but I thought the second one was really funny. I think people go to the movies depending on what they’re in the mood for. Last week I was in the mood for Star Trek so I saw it and loved it, and I wanted to see something funny this weekend so i saw Night at the museum. It’s all a matter of taste I guess.

  • I’m kinda suprised, but not. T3 sucked & Bale is a strange choice; so I understand why people stayed away; But Still!
I wouldn’t go to Ben Stiller’s latest installment even if it was free and they thrown in a Hot Dog w/ relish.

As I sci-fi chick & Terminator fan, I will definitely have to check this out before it leaves the theater.
Anyone know if this is showing at the Imax?

  • I loved Battle at the Smithsonian! It was really cute. I loved the first one and the second was great, and not even because of the monkeys.

  • Correction: He was being slapped by Capuchin monkeys, not spider monkeys.

The movie was funny and I enjoyed it, but I think it definitely needed more Jonah Hill.

  • I was kind of jazzed about T4 from the trailers, but after reading some reviews and WoM, I’ll save my money for Up.

  • Okay, Terminator 3 suck ass…BUT TERM4 SAL (what is printed on the tickets) was REALLY intense. It wasn’t good the way TDK or Iron Man was good, but it was very enjoyable and 100x better than the last one, despite the lack of Ahnold.
Christian Bale was still so cool. So angry, but so cool.

  • I wouldnt watch either one of those movies, everyone is saying terminator 3 sucks! star trek was great, but theres not a lot of good movies out there currently, hopefully transformers is good.

  • I watched Terminator Salvation and thought it was GREAT! I think Night at the Musuem won because of all the parents trying to find something for them and their kids to do during the long weekend.

  • I took 4 kids (not all my own) to see Night at the Museum 2 and only 1, the youngest, thought it was a good movie. I just sat there the whole time thinking, “I paid $50 for this?”
