Eminem Talks Drug Addiction, Recovery, Relapse

eminempic21

Hello my friends. Posting is going to be slow from me this afternoon. Do you want to know why? My fabulous friend Laremy brought an old-school Nintendo into the Film.com offices today. I am playing Duck Hunt and old-school Mario Brothers for the first time in, oh, 15 or 16 years? And can I just tell you guys that I am still pretty damn good? I made it through about seven levels on my first try before my little Mario died. I don’t remember a damn thing I learned in elementary school, but I still remember where the secret tunnels are on Mario. How disturbing is that?

Less disturbing is the fact that Eminem has finally sobered up and is talking publicly about his battle with addiction and his recovery, to promote his new album, Relapse. “It’s no secret I had a drug problem,” he says in a new interview. “If I was to give you a number of Vicodin I would actually take in a day? Anywhere between 10 to 20. Valium, Ambien, the numbers got so high I don’t even know what I was taking.”

Em talks about his ongoing feud with his mother, who was also a drug addict. “It never once hit me that drug addiction runs in my family,” he says. “Now that I understand that I’m an addict, I definitely have compassion for my mother. I get it.”

And as for recording this latest album while sober? “I wanted to make an overall statement — I’m back. It was a slow process. You gotta remember I hadn’t recorded a song sober in seven years. So it took me awhile to even feel like I could record a song sober … I don’t know the last time I shot a video sober, without drinking or taking anything. It’s been years. I almost feel like a little kid again with rap. I wanna play around with different flows. If I don’t feel like it’s what I’m fully capable of, if there’s one weak line, I wanna change it. Rap was my drug. It used to get me high and then it stopped getting me high. Then I had to resort to other things to make me feel that. Now rap’s getting me high again.”

Awww, this actually brings a little smile to my face. It’s so nice to see celebs addressing these problems, staying sober, and succeeding. And judging by the singles that have leaked, Relapse is looking to be quite the hit. Congrats on this, Marshall.

OK. Back to my little Mario and the ducks.

  • Bad boy image and ridicilous blah aside, he seems like a pretty decent and smart guy.

    • I love that game! I can’t believe whoever it is has a Nintendo!!! My Super Nintendo broke a couple years back :(
Old school Mario is the shit tho…
And duck hunt! I hate when you miss and that freaking dog comes up and giggles. I feel to shoot him in the face.

  • I’ve heard an advance copy of the new album, and as an avid Eminem fan, I do have to say that it rather sucks balls. Everyone of his cds, save for the very, very first, almost unknown album, and the last album he put out, every song was either a hit or very listenable. I found that you could listen all the way through, and still be pleased. That’s a rare feat to accomplish these days. Maybe I’m just getting older or something, but I’m not diggin the new stuff…at all. Such a disappointment.

    • I completely agree Stevie B! Although I haven’t heard the complete album yet(hoping full album isn’t a complete fail), the singles so far left this fan displeased. Judging from what I read, apparently I was impressed by the quality of talent produced by the former 20-pills-a-day Eminem. Go figure!

  • i heard we made you and it brought back my dormant disgust for him. don’t like him, never will.

  • I like him, he seems like a cool guy to be around and his music isn’t that bad. Hes been through a lot of drama in his life w/his mom and his ex wife. I really like his music videos, some of them are funny and others go into more serious stuff, like that song he did with Dido “Stan”. I think he made a good comeback =) and I can’t wait to hear his new music.

  • Good for him. It’s always nice to hear about someone getting their shit back together.

  • When I read the title, I thought it meant he had relapsed into drug addiction.
    Man I was freakin’ out.

  • hey marshal missd u dog seems like uv been gone for way to long hows haily ?n goin through so much of the same shit uv been through it really changes who u r n wen u wer using pills did u feel stuck in time like u wanted to stop but every time u tryd to just didnt seem to work out the way u wanted it to n wernt u scarred of longterm effects like hurting for the rest of your life ? no one wants to c anyone go through pain.luv the albumn gives me goosebumps everytime i here it moms the same way u n i rnt so different n how u do it shits hard bro did u wing it cause noone can go cold turkey ? your friend zach

  • I think those of you who don’t like his music these days ought to keep your BIG MOUTH shut. Why don’t you RUBBISH go and write few rap songs yourself and see if anyone would listen to it. Stupid assholes…If you don’t love EM, then you should NOT be here at all to give remarks!

  • Its good to see him making music again, although its not as good as his earlier stuff. I hear he went to rehab at Narconon Vistabay, it seems to be quite popular with celebrities so must be a really good place.

  • I wish him all the luck in battleing this addiction, I Know it is a tough fight, I am battleing the samething but with a different drug, the last past 2 songs he has put out beautiful and not afraid are omg!!!!! great, he is is just getting better and better I respect eminem for trying

don't let the drug kill you marshall,
