“I don’t like living in an elitist world, it bothers me. I don’t want to be part of an elitist sexual preference. It bothers me.  Maybe it’s because I come from a country where I lived under apartheid.  This is a form of apartheid and I don’t want to be a part of that.”

Charlize Theron in an MSN interview comparing the ban on same-sex marriages to apartheid.  She has also gone completely Brangelina and vowed not to marry long-time partner Stuart Townsend until gay marriage is legal in every state.

  • I support that. And believe that she’s 100% correct. Discrimination is discrimination regardless of who it’s aimed at.

    Equal rights. :)

  • what a pile of shit! If she wanted to marry townsend, she would have by now. Her not marrying him isn’t going to make america change its mind on the subject and there’s no way all states will agree to it, especially down south. anyway she’s south african and he’s irish so it’s not even her business!

I’m all for equal rights but spilling bull for my fans? Sad

    • “Her not marrying him isn’t going to make america change its mind ”

Um, did she say it would? No, I don’t think she did. Stop inferring so much.

    • WOW Laura youre quite the fucking idiot.

      1. “Down South”? There are STRONG and VIBRANT gay communities in New Orleans, Mobile, Pensacola, Atlanta, Houston, Gadsten, MIAMI, Dallas, Gulf Shores, Baton Rouge, and many many more.

      2. She has ALWAYS said she would not marry the guy till the gays can. It isnt new just because you just read it here for the first time.

      3. BY ALL MEANS GAY RIGHTS IS A UNIVERSAL ISSUE. It is a HUMAN issue and just because little ass holes like you turn your nose up at the idea that all humans are equal doesnt mean ALL HUMANS cant get involved in a conversation about equal rights.

      4. Your idiocy scares people into taking birth control pills.

      • Hey retard,

hope your job at burger king is secure in this harsh economic climate.
Nothing in my message implied that all humans aren’t equal. By all means, I think universal gay marriage would be a terrific thing. Nothing in my message implied that I was homophobic or prejudiced.
I IMPLIED that old traditional parts of America would be against the idea of gay marriage because of their views on it. Sure Houston and Dallas might be for it, but what about the rest of the state?
And wow, sorry if I don’t spend my time researching which celebrities do and don’t claim to hold off on marriage until gay marriage is legal in every state. I’m more interested in what people with power do about the issue.
Also, the birth control comment? Quite a hypocritical statement from someone who seems to be concerned with human rights issues. I’m not an idiot, I’m in one of the best universities in the world. Sorry my comment offended you so much. I guess freedom of speech isn’t a big human rights issue for you

  • OH NOES!!! Charlize isn’t getting married until we can ALL get married?!?!? Well, that oughta learn ’em!

    Self-important douchery.

    • Self important douchery or personal conviction?
I mean seriously? Shes not saying HER not getting married will solve anything. She is saying it does not feel right FOR HER unless ALL people can partake.

      Do you understand NOW?

She is saying that marriage has become an institution among an elitist class of society and does not wish to engage in that particular act of love since all can not enjoy.

I blame the lack of funding for public schools for your heated ignorance.

      • Yes Dear, its me, your mom.

Im sorry I harshed you like that but you know I have been hitting the sauce pretty hard lately since its tax season and your father has been stalking Tilla Tequila’s dog.

Now come home when your done playing in the interwebs so I can make you supper and tuck you in. I’ll let you rub my bunyuns for a quarter :)

    • Wow, I have no idea how you saw this as Charlize being snobby. She’s not saying it to mean she’s the most important person on the planet and b/c she decided to do this, the world will now automatically change. If you read her comment, her message is exactly the opposite of that. Even if she doesn’t cause a dramatic change, I’m sure gay people are glad to have one more supporter, especially one who has media power.

  • Why doesn’t anyone give Islamic countries shit about gay marriage? Why is “white Christian America” always to blame? As I recall, it was the blacks in California who mass voted against legalizing gay marriage there yet not a peep of criticism directed at them for it, the mormons were blamed instead. I wasn’t aware that California was 50% mormon.

    • Youre going to see it that way because you have an issue with race in general. “the blacks did it” “why pick on white christians” ” Talk to Islam not white christians”

I dont see anything in her comment about Mormons but since you mentioned it, YES Yes the Mormons funded the entire Prop 8 movement.

What you all should be outraged over is the fact that any Chruch has its finger in the senate and congress collective ass hole making laws and putting their two cents in on issue that control your life BUT THEY DONT PAY ANY TAXES!

How can any one sit around and let these fearful fools stand up and rant about all the moral shit they want us to do WHEN THEY DONT EVEN CHIP IN TO PAY THE GOD DAMN TAXES!

So shove that shit in your bible and smoke it!

    • Don’t credit Brangelina for starting this movement. I think Charlize has a good head on her shoulders and decided this on her own, and she’s not just trying to follow some trend by a disgusting and unfortunately popular couple.

  • Hey Jennifer :)
Islamists give Islamic countries shit — they’re called reformers and they are well-placed to do it.
“White Christian America” is where you and I live — its local, its our home — its easier to criticize what you know rather than some American ‘us versus them’ entertainment television version of Islam.

There has been much heated debate about whether or not, statistically-speaking, saying blacks were responsible for the passing of prop8 is accurate — y’know, inflammatory math for Fox-type thing.

What is known is that mormons funded mucho advertising against prop8. California may not be 50% mormon but “white Christian America” has a long tradition of making people feeling like crap for being gay. Non? Straw that broke the camels back? Personally, I think the Mormons should back the ‘eff off with the whining. Just because you *can* mix church and state does not mean you *should*. I don’t blame any specific ethnicity for the bill being passed — I blame organized religion for enabling the bill to be written in the first place.

  • I actually have a friend who vowed to not marry his longtime girlfriend until gay marriage was legal throughout the states. He took such a pledge years before Brangelina were even together, and I’ve always admired him for it.

  • I think someone else has probably said it, but she said that she wouldn’t marry him until gay people could marry years ago. I respect that notion then as I do now.

  • She should stick to acting. With most celebrities, the more they speak out about social issues the more idiotic they appear. Comparing the gay marriage ban to apartheid clearly displays this in Theron’s case. I’ve seen her interviewed on Letterman and she just doesn’t seem all that clever to me. The media and these so-called movie stars are spending way too much time focusing on this whole gay marriage agenda when there’s a whole helluva lot of more importance things that impact the world around us. It’s not really that they care. It’s all so phony of them — they only shoot their mouths off about this because the entertainment industry has very large gay employment demographic. So to stay on their good side with this group and so that they always get best wardrobe and make-up, these primmadonnas pretend to think they are such great pro-gay activists. I’d like to see Theron, Ellen, Brangelina, and the rest of their ilk use their star power to maybe start vocalizing on some real issues, like universal health care, better education of the under-privileged, reducing gang activity, etc. and not just an issue that probably only affects less than 5% of the population.

    • Nah, I think she’s being sincere And maybe the gay issue is closer to Hollywood stars’ hearts because they see it personally from people they know. There’s a much higher chance that Charlize has a gay friend than one without healthcare and in a gang -it’s Hollywood afterall.

    • I agree, it’s very self-serving. You can’t be republican or against gay marriage in Hollywood and have a career. Hollywood preaches tolerance but rarely practices it.

    • They try to stay on the good side with gay people so they “always get best wardrobe and make-up”…wow you dont play into stereotypes do you??

    • gay rights is a real issue. You may not believe in it, but many other people do.

And you’re bringing up Ellen? OF COURSE this is a real issue to her. Man, it’s so weird that she wants the same rights FOR HERSELF.

    • exactly she’s just bulling to get more gay fans. The ignorance here is intolerable!!! JUst because I don’t agree with what she says makes me homophobic?!?! Jesus Christ! It’s not like it’s Obama saying it, it’s some pretty girl that’s been in a few mediocre movies. Comparing gay marriage to apartheid is unnecessary too as she was never a victim of the apartheid. She’s also rejecting her South African heritage by saying it which is bad too. It’s just ridiculous self-selling.

  • “Maybe it’s because I come from a country where I lived under apartheid.”

    Um, bitch say what?

You didn’t live under apartheid. You lived in a place that implemented it, but not on your person. You weren’t treated like crap, banned from setting foot on the good beaches and verbally assaulted in front of people. You were white, blond and blue-eyed. Quintessentially what they loved down there.

My family and I moved to Nigeria form South Africa when I was 10 and till this day, my mom stills says it’s the best decision she’s made.

    • Well, segregation affects everyone. She saw it first hand and clearly did not think it was right. Likewise, she doesn’t think it is right that gay people here do not have the same rights to marry.

I am not sure what you are so inflamed about. She didn’t say she agreed with apartheid. She did not go on to be like “woe is me; living there was so hard for a white girl!!” She simply stated that she lived under apartheid, and did not agree with such things. You shouldn’t hate someone because they were born as a race that OTHERS decided was “better,” just like you shouldn’t hate someone because they were born as a race that OTHERS may think is worse.

  • I think Senor Loco and Jennifer should hook up!! They can then keep their racist, ignorant, hateful views happily to themselves! I bet it would be true love.

    • You’re an idiot. Would you give two shits if a politician said it? No. But I suppose the national enquirer is easier to read than, oh, I dont know, a broadsheet

    • WTF are you even blathering on about? So anyone who doesn’t kiss political correctness ass is automatically a racist/hateful/ ignorant person? Sounds like those qualities are in YOUR bathroom mirror pal. Get a grip.

  • Laura totally called Charlize Theron out!
Charlize did NOTHING to change nor stop apartheid in her country. She got dumped by an aetheist and her mother’s stanz on marriage ended in the death of her father.
Theron is the last person to be giving advice on marriage in our country, we have elected offcials for that.

    • THANK YOU!!!!!

How very hypocritical indeed. It’s all good to have personal convictions, but she’s totally doing it for the glory. Why else? What’s wrong with keeping it to yourself?

  • how is any injustice going to change if we “keep it to ourselves”?? i’m not sure what glory you’re referring to either.

    • Oh shut the fuck up. When was the last time you went on hunger strike for gay rights?? Thought so. As soon as Charlize gets married I’m gonna laugh my ass off in honour of all the retards here that think she actually gives too shits about anything other than her reputation
