Let’s Talk Dresses!

Good Morning!  Did you watch the Oscars?  I did.  I thought Hugh Jackman did a great hosting job, the theater was beautiful and I will never understand one word that Penelope Cruz says.  I liked the new presentation format where former winners paid homage to the nominees.

Oh, and the dresses.  My initial morning after analysis of the Vanity Fair party dresses is as follows:

With the exception of Tilda Swinton who is expected to wear a disaster, the dresses were primarily pretty.  Trends included over-sized floppy bows and the color puce.

Sarah Jessica Parker wore a “barely mint” Dior that was beautiful but predictable.  Halle Berry-also expected.  The diagonal draping is great, but it’s time to try something new.  Claire Danes wrapped herself in a tablecloth and Madonna, with bulging biceps, looks weird in any dress.  Bryce Dallas Howard, Anna Paquin and Jessica Alba looked like they were headed to a wedding shower.  It’s the Oscars bitches!  If ever there was a time for overdressing, this is it.  Jada Pinkett drowned in her dress but Ginnifer Goodwin, undoubtedly wins for ugliest frock ever.  I thought Kate Winslet dressed older than her years and had senior hair.  Sheryl Crow’s dress had proportion issues that made her look pear shaped and Naomi Watts looked sensational for just having a baby but the dress…not flattering.  Gwen Stefani looked like a whisk broom and though I wasn’t in love with Amy Adams dress, I was mesmerized by her necklace.  Buy it for me?  Please?

What say you all?

  • I loved Patricia Clarkson’s entire outfit (shoes and all).

I thought Kate Winslet looked awesome and I loved her hair. Very few women are beautiful enough to pull that off.

I liked Kate Bosworth’s dress but not on her.

  • I know she’s not pictured here, but I must admit it, I LOVED MILEY’S DRESS!!!!!! It was GEORGEOUS! I wanted to hate it soooo badly, but it was actually really beautiful. It looked like a blooming flower. I think her choice rocked. Dammit….

  • I think it was everyone’s main goal to look either as dull, awkward or unflattering as they possibly could that evening. Although, I’m in love with QUITE a few of their shoes.

    • I concur with your assessment, Sam: dull, awkward, unflattering. I couldn’t tell if it was the Academy Awards or a prom.

      • I totally agree! Prom is the most fitting word for most of the dresses during the awards. They all change from the red carpet to the stage, and most of the dresses on the stage were awful!!

  • Is it just me, or does it appear that next no one put any thought/effort/tailoring into their dresses? Very disappointing.

    • Ditto on the hair. I know times are rough for our poor, poor celebs and all, but did everyone fire their stylist?

  • Katie Lee Joel- Did you get that dress out of a Salvation Army dumpster?
Sheryl Crow- Eat something for Christ’s sake.
    Meryl Streep- She looked beautiful.
    Rashida Jones- Very cute dress.
Rachel Weisz- I WANT MY CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT BACK!
Jada Pinkette Smith- Animal House called, they want their toga back.
    SJP- Good choice.
Brice Dallas Howard- Stole the dress from Richie Cunningham’s Mom.
Jessica Alba- Hideous dress, combed her hair with toast.
Jessica Biel- Points for bold color, still an ugly dress.
    Madonna- Who cares?
    Okay, I’m done now.

  • did the ladies try to tone it down for the recession? i think maybe so. anyway, my observations:
claire danes: if that dress had been full length i would have adored it.
    debra messing: loved it.
patricia clarkson: lovely, and age appropriate.
meryl: nice…a bit boring, but for meryl it’s pretty good.
    rachel weiss: dear god, why?!
    sjp: pretty.
sheryl crow: can someone please hold her down and feed her a cheeseburger or something?
madonna: dear god, she needs to cover up her man-arms.
miley: looked like she was runner up in a miss teen texas pagent or something.

  • I found Hugh Jackman really bland. In a few days, I’ll probably even forget he was the host. IMO, both Jon Stewart and Ellen Degeneres did a better job.

  • I’m Spanish but I live in England and speak English with a British accent. Kills me when I hear Penelope Cruz speaking in English, I’m like “make a fucking effort for fuck’s sake everyone’s watching you”. Penelope Cruz’s inability to speak English properly gets on my tits. Big time. Her dress is growing on me though.

  • I guess because I live in a bilingual city where I’m used to francophones speaking english and vice versa, accents don’t bother me. Some francophones speak english without an accent and others have such thick accents and bad grammar, yet they’ve been speaking english forever. It’s just how people are.

Her english doesn’t bother me at all, I just have to pay attention a little more. I just like looking at her, she’s so lovely.

  • Alba wasn’t at the Oscars, she went to the Vanity Fair party only, which a number of nominees/attendees at the Oscars changed and dressed down for. If she’d worn a full gown (as she has when she was actually attending the ceremony), you’d be on her ass for overdressing for a party. I liked her dress fine for the event she was attending. And Halle was anything but boring, man, va va voooom.
