I Will Never Understand The Top Grossing Movies

This weekend, Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail pulled down $41.1M to take the top spot.  I cringed just watching the trailer for this flick, but you went in droves.  Last week’s leading film, Friday the 13th, dropped to $7.8M after earning $43.6 in its opening week.  And Paul Blart:  Mall Cop hangs on…

1. “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail,” $41.1 million.

2. “Taken,” $11.4 million.

3. “Coraline,” $11 million.

4. “He’s Just Not That Into You,” $8.5 million.

5. “Slumdog Millionaire,” $8.1 million.

6. “Friday the 13th,” $7.8 million.

7. “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” $7 million.

8. “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” $7 million.

9. “Fired Up,” $6 million.

10. “The International,” $4.5 million.

  • I don’t get it either. Although I found Taken to be quite good and I do want to see Coraline. There is no way I would pay money to see Madea – I’m so sick of that crap! crap – that’s all it is, CRAP!

  • Music is worse. Katy Perry and Britney Spears top the charts (not now but often and recently). For movies, the options are limited, there’s tons of new music out but people buy the garbage.

  • Certain people that only come out to vote when certain candidates are on the ballot probably only go to movie theatre when certain ones are playing.

    • hahah!

But yes, Wendie, I totally agree.. I don’t get it, either. Why are all of these stupid movies in the top spots?!

      • Fantasy and absurdity is atop the charts because folks want to escape reality these days. No better way to do it than to kick some b-o-o to the t-y with Madea. Girlfriend is off the chain. But, I’m glad to hear that Tyler Perry is planning to bring us some more serious fare.

  • Fired up? Oh god……I thought that was only a movie you could get in blockbuster . Maybe it is and they count that too. who knows. Who wants to watch that crap?? God

    • I agree. I saw it yesterday and I loved it. I’ve seen all TP movies and his plays and I love them all. It’s a shame that “some” people won’t get to enjoy them.

  • Well that’s completely understandable with Friday the 13th, because it has to be the worse Jason movie that ever existed. How did confessions do it’s first week? In my opinion that movie was terrible. Cliche and cheesy. If you read the book, you’d be very disappointed.

  • Taken absolutely sucks. My friends wanted to see it, though I did not. I slept through at least 1/4 of it….stupid story. Bad acting. Save your money.

    • Are you kidding me?! ‘Taken’ was outstanding! Liam Neeson was brilliant, and the performances given were by no means “bad acting.” You obviously slept through more than 1/4 of it…more like all of it.

  • People want to entertained in the current economic state. Nobody wants to run to every movie about yet another white girl wanting or trying to find love. Maybe I’m one of those “certain people” that was mentioned in an earlier comment, but thankfully we did go out and vote, who the hell wants to look at wrinkly ass and his crazy running mate every day. Get over yourselves!
You dont get Madea, because you have no understanding of southern black people…and we dont crave your understanding any time in the future. In the mean time…$41 Million…..GO TYLER PERRY…one up for us “certain people!” Racist idiots

    • i think tyler perry was created by the kkk to perpetuate every stereotype about black/ gay? people on earth.

    • Funny, I hardly think you should be calling someone racist, as your comments are also racist!

    • SoOverYou, if you’re worried about Racist idiots, Tyler Perry continues to perpetuate these racist stereotypes. Also, I don’t remember the above comment ever relating Liberals to those who went and saw Tyler Perry. For me, it’s not about “understanding” southern black people.. it’s about not finding this stereotypical, unintelligent humor remotely entertaining.

  • I liked taken, will never see Medea or Slumdog, kids will make me see Friday the 13th and Paul Blart, and I want to see Coraline,

  • for the record… i am a southern white girl and i want to see madea VERY soon. I am also a kindergarten teacher in a southern “black school” and a five-year-old in my class told me today that she went to see madea this weekend. haha
