Protests Galore!

Here’s Whoopi Goldberg attending a Prop 8 protest in NYC, on Columbus Ave outside the Mormon church.

Numerous protests this week have focused on the Mormon church’s involvement in (and funding of) the passage of Prop 8 in California.

Wow: the gays vs. the Mormons.

Can someone please write a musical about this?

  • she means for her girlfriends. just come out already, whoopie.

why must you always look like a homeless, peddling for spare change?

  • Do gay mormons get to have lots of same-sex spouses? I think they should!
I think I would rather have a musical about that.

  • Kinda funny considering the Mormons were persecuted for their marriage practices way back when. A man can have 10 spouses so long as one of them isn’t a dude.

  • Brocs, Obama isn’t aniti-gay. No politician running for high office would ever say they were pro-gay marriage. It’s just too polarizing an issue. It’s easier to say you’ll keep things as they are because you want to get elected. Find me a non-green party, non-gay politician that is openly pro-gay marriage. Obama also said he was against prop 8. You know why? Because it is discriminatory, plain and simple.

  • I’d go see that musical. :)
Im neither American nor gay, but Prop h8te is a load of shit. Loving someone should’nt be illegal

  • “Can someone please write a musical about this?”

They already did, almost twenty years ago. A play, anyway, not a musical, and a damned long one at that. And then they made an HBO miniseries out of it.

  • Dude, that’d be awesome! I’d watch that shit.

Man, I support Woopi’s message and all, but I need to comment on the fact that she looks like such a hobo, not that it’s any surprise to any of us I suppose…..

  • WHAT? WHoopi protested outside my Temple becasue members of my Church, in California supported a constitutional ammendment to the california ammendment in CALIFORNIA!! For that she protested MY CHURCH in NY??? Did she stand in front of a Mosque and protest after 9/11?? How dare she, how dare they!

  • I will be in San Fran at the beginning of December. Maybe Beet can meet me for a rendezvous and I can play motorboat with ample chest?

  • Broncs comment just a supporter for gay rights. If the Mormons need money. I’ll glady give up a months salary.

  • OK, so Obama is a liar. That’s better?

Obama has PROMISED his supporters that he is anti-gay marriage. Period. But because he’s the Prince of Goodness we assume he can’t possible MEAN that and is just fucking lying to us?

    Common…

  • Broncs, did Obama lie to you? Were you ever one of his supporters?

Is that the only argument you can make? I guess so, since it’s the one you’ve drooled over and over again all over this blog.

It’s about as effective as Curly lying on his side, running around in circles.

    “Common” is right.

  • Here are the stats people, and then form your own opinion.

According to Wikipedia there are 36, 553, 215 million people in California.

Of those millions, the #1 Christian religion in California, as of 2000 are ROMAN CATHOLICS at 10, 079, 310. And the #2 is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 529, 575. Do the math people!!

I’m not sure why everyone is after members of their faith and protesting at only their churches and temples because from what I recall, Catholics don’t support Prop 8 either.

Besides that…..many other faiths including members of the Jewish faith and the Muslim faith didn’t agree to it either. If you’re going to hate and protest on one–then hate and protest at every other church, synagogue and mosque.

  • @ sara zane

The Mormon Church is being heavily protested against because their fund raising was key in the passage of Prop 8. While many other religious groups supported the measure as well, none did so as vocally or with such large financial donations as the powerful LDS Church.

Secondly, protesting at every religious house of worship in California would be unfeasible. California is a large state, and their are many different religious denominations and places of worship for each. If one wants to protest, but does not have an everlasting supply of time to do so, it would be most practical to focus on the most influential entity. While there are far more Catholic voters in California, the Mormon Church makes up for that in its monetary influence and in its power, especially considering that it is based on Utah, not very far California.

  • what Bia said.

We’re talking millions and millions and millions of dollars. That’s precisely why people are angry about the Mormon church. And because some people don’t think that a church should be so heavily funding a government issue (which takes us all back to the separation of church and state, etc)

and dude, lareina- it’s not like she has a sign that says “Mormons are cunts” her sign is just about equal rights.

  • gosh, i bet hairy primates all over the world are clapping their cymbals together and grinning bigtime after seeing whoopie supporting their equal rights. those would be the friends she’s speaking of, right?
