Today's Evil Beet Gossip

Remind Me

Because I forget.  What is it I’m supposed to do tomorrow?  I’m fucking sick of the election and ready for November 5th.  “Vote for Change” has become the equivalent of “whassup” and “that’s hot.”  Entertaining for like two seconds and then annoying for all eternity.

So here’s the question: Everything I read says Obama is going to win by a landslide.  Does anyone out there think McCain still has a shot?

Jay-Z, Sean Combs (I refuse to play along with his name changes), Russell Simmons, Jesse Jackson Jr. and Mary J. Blige got together for a Last Chance for Change rally in Miami.  I think that’s the equivalent of a last chance workout on The Biggest Loser  where everyone frenetically starts doing jump tricep bench dips in hopes that it’ll make a difference at the final weigh-in.

  • It’s important to care about who our president is going to be. You realize the next president will have the opportunity to appoint a Supreme Court Justice during his term? If McCain wins… the Court will lean in favor of conservative decisions, which, in my opinion, will take this nation back a few decades (i.e. the turning over of Roe v. Wade).

It’s sad to me that people will spend more time on tabloid sites obsessing over celebrities because it provides an escape from their own mundane lives, yet will not take more than five minutes to watch or read the news and learn more about the two potential new leaders of this country. Will those same people be complaining because they got laid off or foreclosed a year from now, even though they didn’t educate themselves and vote?

It’s great that celebrities realize this and use their fame to direct their fans’ interest towards a worthy cause.

It’s not so great that this article on your tabloid site almost promotes apathy. A political slogan stands for something of utmost importance, unlike other fad catchphrases. And if it doesn’t to you, I still think it’s a little messed up to put down those people out there who actually get off their asses to do things to push their nation towards positive change. If only you could ever be so accomplished.

  • Let’s hope it’s a landslide. Because otherwise, the decision may be caught up in court battles, for weeks or even months.

  • P.S. Also, awesome job early voting. Doing that makes up for your hatred of Obama’s slogan.

    Obama better win.

  • I can only HOPE that McCain wins. However, I know that Obama and his “change” will soon take office. Has anyone considered that his “change” isn’t the sort of change you want for our country?

  • @hmm

I agree. Any welcoming feeling I had towards wendie are now squashed. Apathy is the last thing we need. This is our future we’re talking about and everyone needs to have their voice heard, regardless of who the hell you’re voting for.

  • Rachel,
what is your definition of “change”?
Mine is bringing in a new, fresh faced leader that has ALL of us in his best interests. Not a repeat of Bush.
Change to me is getting our troops out of Iraq and into territory that actually has terrorists that want to kill us.
Change is not repeating the same mistakes that Bush has in the last 8 years.
Change is giving an outsider an opportunity to prove to all Americans that he is the best man for the job.
Change is NOT taking away my rights as a woman.
Change is getting rid of the corruption, not bringing in more of the same. ie, Palin.

  • there’s jay z again, answering the question about just how many times he’s actually had sex with beyonce. what a fucking beard.

  • I think it’s pretty irresponsible of the media to report that Obama has such a lead, because it just isn’t true. This is a close race.

What if the reports cause dems to neglect to vote because they’re convinced their man will win anyway? Or what if reports cause repubs to neglect to vote because they’re convinced their man will lose?

  • @Rachel:
Now that you mention it, I haven’t considered what Obama’s “change” will mean. How could I go this long without considering whether it will be right for this country? Let me think about it for a few seconds.

OMG, you’re right!!!! Thanks, Rachel!!! I’m voting for McCain.
(ew, writing that last part creeped me out)

And in the immortal words of Homer Simpson: in case you couldn’t tell, I was being SARCASTIC.

  • @hmmm
have you been reading this site long? because evil beet has constantly been supporting obama and urging people to vote. just because they portray it with sarcasm and distain dosent mean that they’re promoting apathy

and you’re either blind or stupid to not notice that most people only care about politics around a presidential election. it is a fad. just like everything else. it’ll pass until another 4 years from now.

  • Hmmm – are you new here? Because I think we’ve been round and round with open discussions and debates (whether fact based or based in fantasy) about this election. There are good arguments from both sides. If anything, I’d rather come here and talk ‘election’ than listen to the MSM doing exactly as jennatar said – projecting for Obama. I seem to remember another election where the MSM f*cked it up because they started calling states too early. Now they are calling the entire campaign. Frankly, it does have the result of keeping voters at home. On here, you can actually listen to REAL people and see their reasons for voting for either candidate. It’s a study in culture.

I’m going to hold out hope for McCain. It’s not over until it is over. You never know!

  • After the last two presidential elections I think anything’s possible.

I have a question. With all the talk about getting people to vote no matter who they vote for, I wonder, shouldn’t we be encouraging people to educate themselves and vote? I think if you’re a person who doesn’t take the time to learn about the candidates and issues, maybe it’s better if you leave voting to people who do.

I’m sure you’ll tell me if I’m effing wrong.

  • i dvr’d the obama “informercial” the other night- then yesterday sat down with my parents to watch it (my mom is still undecided) and while the info said barack obama etc. it was an episode of seinfeld!!! i was so pissed! but i do love seinfeld. . .

  • The (CLEARLY biased) media, indicates Obama is in the lead by a landslide. Of course that’s what they will broadcast, no matter if its a landslide lead or not. In reality, its a very close race!

  • Well, I don’t consider cutting military defense by millions a good “change” for one.

And, evilzoe, you’re right . . . taking rights away from women is on McCain’s agenda . . . wait, isn’t his running mate a WOMAN?

Jeez, people get so testy here. I think Obama is a candidate that has only used the word “change” to get where he is.

Thank you, Liberals, for electing such an awesome new president . . . note the sarcasm.

  • Hey Rachel, you idiot, just because McCain picked a woman running mate doesn’t mean he has women’s rights at heart. You’re the women that he’s pandering to simply by nominating a woman VP (albeit an unqualified and ignorant woman).

Oh, and you’re right, let’s keep spending BILLIONS of dollars a WEEK to fight a war in Iraq that has NOTHING to do with 9/11 or terrorists. Yeah, great idea. And then complain about taxes. Go ahead. You know you want to.

Support whoever you want to, but at least make some goddamn sense when you do it.

  • it’s more of a disrespect for her to be nominated BECAUSE she’s a woman, and we all know she’s nothing more than a political pawn to garner the evangelical and women voters. the point is not to have a woman in office, but to have a woman he has broken the glass ceiling with merits, honors, and hardwork.

  • I hope with all my heart Obama wins… But i have a feeling they’re gonna change the rules at the last minute or do some crazy shit just so that grandpa and his bitch win.. And that’s gonna be pretty sad..

  • Wow, I’m so glad everyone is civilized here.

President Jimmy Carter cut our military contracts while he was in office and we suffered dearly. It’s not the best decision to cut back on our contracts to keep up with the technology. Do you really think it’s wise to do that?

    Lizzy, you sound classy.

By the way, I’m not complaining about taxes one bit. I pay them like I should and will continue to do so. Unfortunately, with Obama I know he’ll get tax fever and soon even more of my check will go to him.

If you want to complain about taxes, it’s not to the republican party. Generally, democrats are the ones that love taxing. They’ve decided to “spread the wealth” on account of others. Thanks, Lizzy, for sounding so smart.

  • Oh please, everyone is snarky here.

And no, under Obama, the middle class will save money on taxes. McCain will actually raise mine. Sure, traditionally Democrats have raised taxes, but since Obama is about CHANGE, maybe things will be different. Yeah, Obama says he will “spread the wealth around,” but I’d rather that instead of just giving all the wealth and tax cuts to huge corporations who send jobs overseas or invest in an extremely expensive war which should never have spread to Iraq in the first place. But I’m glad that you “know” that Obama will raise taxes. Must be nice to predict the future.

And Sarah Palin is a disgrace not only to republican women but to all women in politics. Thanks Rachel, for looking out for women’s rights with Sarah Palin (who wants to take away our right to choose, as well as making women pay for their own rape kits)… note the sarcasm.

  • Though, I do not believe in the choice of our new president, I am thrilled to be an American, will accept our decision, and will respect our new leader. The outcome, obviously, was not a shock and I just pray that Obama will be the kind of leader everyone has claimed he will be.
