Today's Evil Beet Gossip

No Laughing Matter

Two talk show hosts have accused Magic Johnson of faking AIDS.  The exchange happened on-air Wednesday which prompted Magic to respond to the Associated Press.  He has called for the station to educate their listeners about HIV and AIDS but does not want the employees terminated.

Chris Baker and Langdon Perry of KLTK Minneapolis were discussing illnesses that can be controlled over a long period of time with medication.  The partial transcript goes like this:

Baker:  “Like Magic Johnson?”

Perry:  “Like Magic with his faked AIDS.  Magic faked AIDS.”

Baker:  “You think Magic faked AIDS for sympathy?”

Perry:  “I’m convinced that Magic faked AIDS.”

Baker:  “Me too.”

First of all, Magic was diagnosed in 1991 with HIV.  He has not been diagnosed with AIDS.  But most importantly, I can find humor in almost any situation.  People with catastrophic and/or terminal illnesses?  Just…not funny.

  • Eh, that’s horrible.

And I just realized this, I forgot we had a new weekend blogger. I just realized that the past few blogs were by you, wendie. You’re starting to sound like Beet, which is cool ’cause I love her.
    :)

  • While those radio jocks were insensitive, they did say something that has been said and whispered by numerous others: that Magic has something similar to HIV, but he does not actually have HIV. Most likely he has Hep-C, which has many of the same symtoms and can impact one’s lifespan.

  • i think it’s effed up that magic johnson is no longer HIV positive because he has money. Money cured his HIV.

  • Man, my mom died of aids when I was 14 and I remember thinking “If Magic Johnson can live this long why couldn’t she?”

And then I realized we were broke as fuck and he is not.

    Ce’la vie or whatevetr.

  • I don’t get it, Mercy. What’s the point? Most likely he has another disease which has many of the same symptoms and can also kill him? And what authorizes you or anyone else, besides Magic’s doc, who is bound by confidentiality, to speculate about what his correct diagnosis would be? And to what end? Shades of the omniscient Dr. Drew here.

Sorry, but I just had an episode with my sister in law telling my nine year old that the diagnosis her Harvard educated pediatrician gave her couldn’t possibly be correct. My SIL once contemplated becoming a dental assistant, but as far as I know, that is the extent of her medical credentials.

  • reason for faking aids as a black man;

    1. you obviously couldn’t fake ‘white executive’.
    2. you need more dates and couldn’t get them through ‘closetgay.com’
    3. you were washed up as a basketball player and got tired of having anal sex in the shower after the game with the opposing team.
    4. you thought that no black man would ever be able to run for president of the united states, so why bother faking being straight like obama.
    5. you were jealous of michael jordan and needed headlines.
    6. nike decided you didn’t relate to black men enough to design a shoe after you.
    7. you had fucked every available white/other race chick that hangs out with black basketball players that you knew….obviously before eva longoria came along.
    8. you wanted some of those groovy meds hiv positive guys get.
    9. you’re just a dumbass basketball player no matter how much money you make.
    10. you have a small dick like a white guy and got tired of apologizing for it.

  • re; donkey punch

hee hee….let’s all spend our time protecting those who have made millions and millions of dollars on the backs of those who lost everything….wonder how many of those dollars magic gives back to aids research and helping those who have full blown aids?

by the way, i’d have you blow me but i just can’t get it up for you anymore.

  • First of all, why would anyone fake being HIV positive, especially during the late 80’s to early 90’s when people still associated HIV with homosexuality and intravenous drug use? Second of all, a simple search on Google of Magic Johnson will prove to you that he is in fact involved in HIV activism. Speaking for the UN and setting up a foundation is more than most people have contributed to, well, anything. Third of all, what does Johnson’s bank account have anything to do with the underlying issue here? Claiming someone is faking a terminal illness in unacceptable and just plain cruel. I would be just as disgusted if Johnson had been a member of the working class. Bigotry is still bigotry even if it is expressed towards the dominant ground.

  • You are racist and homophobic. Don’t pretend your hate-filled comments are motivated by some love of your fellow man.

  • jeez donkey, what’s up with you lately? are you just pissed that someone on here has taken over your spot as the funniest poster? you used to have a sense of humor. it is obvious (to some of us) that certain beet regulars use clearly offensive viewpoints to get a laugh. and to bait people. and you are taking the bait.
i’m totally saying this as a concerned fellow beet reader. you seem to be in need of a massage and or b.j.

  • Nope Joan. People like censorthis always post the same shit. He is a homophobic and a racist conservative.

If you consider that funny, well you belong to live in the USA.

  • Geez…education about HIV and AIDS, although seemingly ubiquitous, seems to be lacking in beet readers. It is unknown exactly how long one can live with HIV; eventually, yes, it will turn into AIDS, and then the life span is very short, but HIV can be combated with many new and innovative drugs, if you have the money and/or good insurance.

A friend of mine lived 18 years with HIV; she was diagnosed in 1988. Her husband was diagnosed the same year and developed AIDS after 7 years and died two years later in 1998. She got it from him, so he probably had it longer, but there is a lot we just don’t know

Magic is definitely on the tailend of the curve, but we should be congratulating, not accusing, him. He is lucky, and has used his time, fame and money wisely to improve education. But, obvious, there is still more education to be done.

  • i just thought that he was always making comments as a conservative homophobic racist to make fun of conservative homophobic racists. i’m not even being sarcastic.
but maybe i am wrong, i’m willing to admit that. but i will continue to try to see his posts in that light because i’d feel better if he was joking than if he actually is that much of an ignorant, close-minded ass, like keightlynn, who’s posts just make me sad.

  • @ joan

relax, joan. i’m never, ever, serious on this board. unlike all of the ‘serious minded’ celebrity blog posters on this site, i find myself bored while discussing what color shoes j.lo has on today. if you look hard enough you may actually find some truth in my posts, which is the point. if you don’t get it, then sorry. if you do, then good for you. i could care less either way. i won’t pander you, that’s for sure. i’m far from a racist and considered voting for obama long before most people even knew he was on the map. i still think hillary is a murderous lesbian bitch and that donkey punch is a crybaby closet gayboy, but pretty much everything else i say is fluff. and at least keightlynn has the balls to tell everyone how she feels as well. you were young once, right? right?

  • censorthis, the only people who find your racist and homophobic “jokes” funny are other rednecks from the south.

  • Yes, now let’s all be politically correct and mimic all the good Democrats out there. Heaven forbid that funny racist and homophobic comments disappear from Evil Beet Gossip!
