Today's Evil Beet Gossip

You Know, I Never Thought I’d Say This

But it’s really not that important to vote.

I’m sorry, but I find Declare Yourself’s new campaign, wherein assorted celebrities pose with ballgags and muzzles and fishhooks through their mouths, to be more disturbing than galvanizing. Jessica Alba’s shots are easily the most annoying. This is the most recent one released. Like, does she realize that you can’t win an Oscar for a PSA?

You guys should totally vote and stuff, because it’s important. And I hear a lot of people say, “Why would I vote? I don’t live in a swing state,” and, frankly, that’s a fair point. If you don’t live in a swing state, your singular vote’s unlikely to have much impact on the actual Presidential election. But keep in mind that there are lots and lots of other matters on the ballot. There’s probably at least one that’s not clearly going one way or another. It may be one that you feel is important. Personally, I also feel it’s important to vote out of respect for the people who fought and sacrificed so that we could have the right to vote — this hits home particularly hard for me as a woman.

But, like, if something comes up and you don’t make it to the polls, I really don’t feel it’s the equivalent of being bound and gagged. There are lots of other ways to make a difference in the world and to make your voice heard. I just find these tactics to be fear-based and obnoxious.

  • I agree (and Jessica just looks like a sexy Hannibal Lechter).

Now, if the ad was targeting voter caging or other kinds of disenfranchisement, I would stand behind it. Because, the truth is other people can silence you by taking away your vote. You might silence yourself, but why would you cry about it?

  • Wow, this is the most I’ve ever seen this “actress” emote… which leads me to believe that those tears are Photoshopped.

  • Celebs really need to shut the fuck up. They are doing more damage than good. I have to agree, graphic ads like this are really pathetic.

I am capable of voting without the “influence” of celebs. No matter how hard they try to influence people to vote, there are some folks out there that just don’t have the intelligence level to understand the message they are putting out. So why bother? perhaps if they put some T&A on those ads instead, it might do the job….

  • hey, be easy on them! cant you see the tears running down their faces? lol
honestly its all just publicity to me… blah blah Jessica Alba speaks out about politics. whateverrrrrrr…

  • definitely lame, these ads, and horribly boring.

thing is though, loads of people buy into this sort of shit because many americans evidently do not have the ability look at mass media critically. it’s unfortunate but true. and i think it is a civil duty to vote if only to prove, at the end, that the polls were rigged (*cough!* by the republicans *cough!*) … (or, “how al gore was FUCKED in 2000”). like, you know they’ll rig ’em, right?

  • Gross and stupid, my reaction is not “I gotta go vote!” but rather, “Jessica Alba has a tad too much time on her hands and is quite possibly working through some sort of strange S&M-themed post-partum depression.”

  • I agree this ad goes a little bit TOO far, but most Americans don’t understand what a privilege it is, and unless you’ve lived and worked (or spent time in and had meaningful experiences) in a country where people don’t enjoy the privilege of voting as we do in the U.S., with everything it means…then I don’t think you can really understand the meaning of it…and I don’t think that’s anyone’s fault for not totally understanding that because for so many people we’ve never had to fight for our right to vote…just food for thought I guess

  • Speaking of “food for thought”, Maybe this isn’t an ad for voting at all, maybe this is just a candid shot of Alba’s post-pregnancy diet.

“I’m so fat,” she’s crying. “If I don’t lose all that flab withing three weeks of giving birth, I’ll just DIE!”

  • Just that little touch of crazy-offensive porn promotion to make us remember what we are suppose voting for and against. Not so wise Hollywood.

  • The only part about not voting is that if you do not vote, you are not allowed to bitch and complain about anything. Gas prices, pot holes in the street, anything!!!!

  • sorry. i just can’t take jessica alba and her ilk seriously when it comes to politics.

i mean, which of her strongly held beliefs are we supposed to see as most important? that she really, really, really, wants us to vote, pwetty pwease, or that she wants a foundation to match her complexion perfectly? once you’re a shill, stfu about politics. seriously.

  • I just don’t want to vote. Why would i vote for a guy who I don’t think deserves to be president. Obama is underqualified and mccain has sarah palin.

  • What I don’t like about them is that they aren’t trying to get people to vote, they’re trying to get the to vote for Democrats, because there are still those who haven’t bothered to re-read how the electoral college works, and they’re still ignorant and think an election was “stolen.” As a Libertarian, hell, I hope the ignorant don’t vote!

There will be a free Jay-Z concert this weekend in Detroit, to get people to vote. It’s clear they expect people to register as and vote for Democrats. Nothing like a little discrimination and racism perpetuated by Democrats, all waved under the “get out and vote” mantra.

  • Its sad that the only way to connect with video game tv obsessed youth is over the top violence. The admen probs figured that since SAW had UNBELIEVABLY gone on to make FIVE movies, that the whole torture porn thing is really popular

  • i agree with beet. and ads like this kind of annoy me in that they get people who would ordinarily have sided with whatever cause to get fed up and walk away. i’m still gonna vote, obviously, but i don’t know that anybody’s mind will be changed by a picture of jessica alba with duct tape all over her. if anything, it’ll make a couple of eighteen-year-old boys stay home and watch movies.

  • So, Jay-Z (a black man) can’t give a free concert to support a candidate (a black man) without someone calling discrimination and racism? And I suppose the NASCAR voter drives at racing venues (backed by the RNC) aren’t trying to register a certain “type” of voter.

Grow up. Then read about voter caging and realize that the republicans are actually trying to take away the vote of “certain kinds of people.”

  • Certainly an attention grabber (for all of three seconds) but I doubt it will succeed in encouraging anyone to vote. It says more about today’s celebrity culture than the actual message it tries to convey. Why worry about politics, history, and the outside world when you’ve got your nice cosy little cocoon of triviality? Unfortunately there is no surefire way to endorse voting; show a shocking picture of what life is like for those in countries without the privilege and you’ll scare people away, offer them a history lesson and they’ll deem it too long and boring (we’re the ADD generation, after all), shove a celebrity on the cover and the only thing they’ll remember or even notice is the celebrity in question. What to do???

  • Granted, I’m not a video-obsessed college-age boy, but I just don’t get what this picture has to do with voting or how it would get anyone to vote. The message is incoherent and the photo is absurd and yes, disturbing. I don’t know, maybe it will work for a few people, but there has to be a better way. And yes, you should still vote if you don’t live in a swing state. A little participation won’t hurt anyone.

  • SHE LOOKS LIKE A PIG. COULDN’T THEY PHOTOSHOPPED THAT BACK FATNESS AND MAKE HER NECK LONGER. SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE GOT NO NECK. VERY UNFLATTERING I IMAGINE WHAT SHE SAID AFTER SEEING THAT?
    “EWWW” JUST EWW SERIOUSLY.

  • I’ll just throw out that I hate the whole campaign myself – I seriously feel like the people that are going to vote, will vote and I don’t think you’re scaring anyone else into doing it by putting pictures of Jessica Alba in various states of bondage.

Unless, of course, upcoming actresses are like, “Omg, if we don’t vote, we’re gonna end up like her!!”

  • Thanks, jk. That “racism” thing jumped out at me, too. Yikes.

Voter caging and disenfranchising is almost always aimed at people of color. That’s ACTUALLY racism. And it’s almost always done by the GOP. There was just a story out of Michigan recently about the Michigan GOP coming to polling places with lists of foreclosed homes so they could challenge voters who had lost their homes. Classy.

  • I like the pic definitely a surprise to me..
Jessica Alba at her best! I am still not voting though!
