John Edwards Admits to Extramarital Affair

It’s opening night of the Olympics, and it also happens to be a lovely, summer Friday night that the country can’t wait to get out and enjoy.

What a politician to do?

Why, admit to cheating on his wife, of course.

Former U.S. senator and Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted to an extramarital affair in an interview with ABC News, the network reported Friday. He denied being the father of the woman’s child, as had been alleged in tabloid reports.

Speaking to the network for a story to be aired Friday night, Edwards acknowledged the affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter, which began after she was hired to make documentary videos for his campaign, ABC said.

He said that he has not taken a paternity test but that the timing of the affair rules out the possibility that he could be her baby girl’s father.

A former campaign aide has publicly said he fathered the child.

Edwards also said that, although he was banging Rielle — while, I should mention, his wife was battling cancer — he never loved her.

See, that makes it all okay. It’s the conversation I have with all my boyfriends. I’m like, “See, I totally understand if you need to get some outside pussy, just don’t fall in love, okay?” Right. Why don’t we just have Tucker Max run for President?

  • Disgusting sack of sh*t.

I’m sure his dying wife is just thrilled for this to come out. They are supposed to make a ‘statement’ in a bit. I’m sure she’ll be standing by her man. Poor woman.

  • This is sure to be shinning beacon of comfort and light for his wife to hold onto during her final days. He makes me ill.

  • well i’m not defending his actions, but he does claim that his wife and family knew about it since 2006, so i’m guessing they decided to forgive him. if the family got over it i think we can too.

somewhat interesting: my high school principal was arrested because he stole money from the school to pay for hookers (about $30,000) when his wife had cancer. i think john edwards is telling the truth when he says he didn’t love her because to me it seems like these affairs are outlets for men dealing with a wife battling cancer? i don’t know but whatever. it was pretty shocking.

notice how this story got out on a friday, when saturday papers are the least read and the olympics are happening to distract from it? hehe.

  • Can’t anyone keep their d**k in their pants for 10 minutes, for goshsakes!!! especially when they’re in the public eye, it’s like, HELLO, do you think this isn’t going to come out??!! Unbelievable. I actually would have rooted for him as VP but not now. Bet his kids are thrilled too.

  • This absolutely makes me sick to my stomach. This is a man I actually admired.

Poor guy! He had to have some relief from the awful stress of HIS WIFE BATTLING CANCER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sure she would have totally understood, like, sure – I’ve got chemo to go to, go get yourself a piece of ass on the side. Jerk.

  • And I totally hate this political ‘standing by my man’ crap! You’d better believe I’d let him stand up there all by his lonesome. He got himself into it, he can try to talk himself out of it!

  • I dont give a shit if he has a dick or not – it does not mean its ok to sleep with other women when your wife has cancer and might not be able to be around and suck your cock!

Lovely that he chose to not only fuck another woman and not STAND BY HIS WOMAN while she is sick and dying but he actually chose to be irresponsible enough to father another child with that ho. THIS MAKES ME WANT TO VOMIT.

Back to the whole ‘stand by your man’ bullshit – talk about a bad example for women everywhere. Shes dying of cancer, has no real ‘stake’ in politics for her self that she wants to keep alive, and she has children of her own to teach right and wrong – yet she still chooses to stick with this fucking douche bag.

She even has the means to leave him…. ugh SICK!

  • I completely supported John Edwards both times he was running. I am extremely disappointed and feel really bad for his family. However, this is not the first time a politician/celebrity/person has cheated on their wife or husband. That doesn’t make it remotely acceptable but politicians and celebrities are people who make mistakes like anyone else and deserve forgiveness and privacy. First of all, his wife wasn’t still “fighting” cancer at the time. She was in remission and actually was on a book tour. The cancer relapsed after this affair was over. Not that it makes it better to have an affair and cheating is LOW, but the fact that this family issue that was dealt with privately in 2006 is now being drug out in the open 2 years after the fact sucks. This woman is now very sick again and has chosen to stick by her husband, maybe the media should lay off…the man isn’t even running anymore so what is the benefit of putting anyone through it again. Shame on John for having the affair and shame on the media for re-opening wounds.

  • @Lynn: i understand your points but i have to respectfully disagree. the “legitimate” media HAS laid way off of this story and i think that is disgraceful. not as disgraceful as cheating on your wife, but he was a serious contender for the presidency and this issue was swept under the rug. i hate to say it but if mr edwards was a republican he would have been crucified in the press, e.g. Larry Craig. this inherent bias is not good journalism and it is patently unethical. all politicians should be treated equally. mr. edwards has earned the same censure that mr. craig rightly received.

yes, elizabeth edwards is very sick. yes, she is dying and if her husband did not still control a large number of delegates, this might even be a “private family matter.” but that is not the case, he was slated to speak at the national convention – i don’t know if they’ll let him speak given this admission. he is a public person and HE and HE alone has exposed his dying wife to public humiliation.

okay, i will now ride my hobby horse off into the sunset.

  • Well she’s not really standing by him is she, she’s probably too sick to care. “Hello, I’m dying, I don’t really give a rat’s a*** about what’s going on and who’s doing what to whom”.

There is enormous pressure on the wives of politicians to “stand by them” because America is stuck in the 1950s. Even Hilary Clinton fell for that crap. If my husband cheated on me then I’d know there was something seriously wrong with my marriage and we’d need to address but I sure as hell wouldn’t be letting his polluted cock near me again.

  • His poor wife. That woman has been through hell, between her cancer, the loss of their older son, and now this.

When a man shows me that he lacks love and compassion for his wife by cheating on and emotionally hurting her, I question his ability to have compassion for people who are depending on him to better their lives with important political decisions. He’s not the kind of person America needs for a president. Good riddance to him.

  • i don’t know where you people get all your self righteousness. there are multiple sides to every story. men have physical needs ya know. i can just see being all sick and having my man come in expecting some, and being like “jeez, i’m dying over here. can’t you just go get a hooker or something?”

  • p.s. fox news will be all over this as well as that really respected o’reilly. ya, pinhead! barf.

  • Joan I’m with you on this one. News flash most rich powerful men have sexual encounters with multiple women. I’m not rich yet, but finished grad school with great job so I meet beautiful successful women weekly.

  • HELLOOOOO PEOPLE: Let’s not forget that Cindy McCain is one of the many affairs that John had after he returned from Viet Nam to find his wife permanently altered from a serious car accident. That man came home and caroused around on his wife who was, after several years of rehab, still trying to recover from an accident that she did not want to burden her husband with while he was in Viet Nam. She did everything to help her husband come home alive and well and HE WENT AND HAD MULTIPLE AFFAIRS AND FINALLY LEFT HER FOR HIS MULTI-MILLIONAIRE MISTRESS. Yes, John Edwards has disappointed the freaking hell out of me, as did my own husband 13 years ago – whom I left and did not stand by (only after one year of trying to work it out for a year, mind you), but John McCain was worse — he left his ill wife for that Cindy….
This whole thing only makes me respect and love Elizabeth Edwards more….

  • Mr. NYC, it sounds a little like you’re bragging about something that isn’t happening to you, but whatever. If you want to sleep with a ton of different women, hey, more power to you, but don’t get married and have a few kids first. He made a choice and a vow to get married and stay faithful, and he apparently didn’t feel it was all that important. What a great guy.

  • jojo says:

    “p.s.
why do women do that to other women??????
    I’d love to know why………”

i hate when people assume its just always the other womens/guys fault. John Edwards is totaly 100% at fault for so much of this too, maybe even more! He’s the married one. The mistress, I have no idea if she is married or even in a relationship. But I think anyone that is in a relationship, should have more responsibility in saying “No” to the person that is trying to get with him or that they’re attracted to. Its THEIR responsibility to stay faithfull to their spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, whatever. People will come and go, and be attracted to you, and what not, and thats all fine and good if you can keep things with the person that you’re with okay and it doesn’t effect you. It just shows how much John Edwards “loves” his wife, when he lets a girl that means “nothing” come between he and his wife like that. Love outlasts sex and all of that, if he really loved his wife he would’ve said no. I think John Edwards is full of shit, and it is totaly his fault as much as the girl he banged.

  • Infidelity in a marriage is between a husband and wife. Many work it out in one way or another. The public at large should just mind their own business.

Politicians are not honest, they get where they are by lying cheating and stealing. The electorate chooses the one who will lie cheat and steal with their interests in mind. The problem is that in the USA middle class keeps looking for Jesus to run for office. There is only one Jesus and he aint running for no stinking office. Get over it people.

Men are whores… after so many thousands of years, why is that such a surprise? This childish mentality of expecting a politician to be squeaky clean is ruining the nation. If you can accept that there is not a Santa Clause you can accept this. If the person is a big enough bastard to do his or her job effectively then that what voting for them is all about. I say so what…. next news item please……

  • @cay:
if you have read my posts about john edwards’ affair under the other threads, you wouldn’t be going after me now…

    1. in my initial comments, i lamented about how disappointed i was in John Edwards, who was the candidate whom I wanted for president.
    2. my own husband had an affair that ended our marriage in the most excruciating and painful way, and i give him complete responsibility for having made the choice to be disloyal to our marriage and family and so i have been through this harrowing process on my own and am FULLY aware what a man’s part is in it…
    3. being a woman myself, i simply wondered aloud why women would do that to other women… i know why men do it!!! the “single” party involved with a married person is just as much to blame as the married person and NO i do not agree that having an affair means that the married person did not ever love his/her spouse…
    4. i didn’t give her any more blame than i did him, i just wondered how we women can get involved with married men, knowing that we are mortally wounding another woman’s marriage… that’s all… because i think women belong to a sisterhood that should be respected above everything….
so … i will continue to wonder how women do that to other women…

  • Beet,

Is it just me or is he a ‘FILF’ (Father I’d Like to Fuck) I would love to suck his dick. BTW, I am a gay man, but I think he is one of the sexiest polititians to ever run for the Oval Office. Or should say ‘Oral Office’. I think I am going to create my own cabinet possition.
