But the New York Post says Britney has no one to blame but herself. I’m just going to put their whole article here:
Britney Spears has no one to blame but herself for her disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night. The lip-synching pop tart showed up for her big comeback late, unprepared and with a drink in her hand.
On Saturday, the day before the VMAs, Spears was scheduled to arrive at rehearsal at around 1 p.m. Our spy said, “She didn’t even get to Las Vegas until 4:30 p.m. It was ridiculous . . . The production people at MTV were freaking out . . . Nobody can tell Britney what to do anymore. No one can control her. She is a mess.”
To make matters worse, when she arrived in Vegas, Spears didn’t go straight to rehearsals.
“She went to her hotel room and ordered a bunch of food and some frozen margaritas,” the spy said. “She came down, like, an hour later with a frozen margarita in her hand.”
When Spears preformed on Sunday, she stumbled a couple times and couldn’t remember the words she was lip-syncing. She covered her mouth at one point but by the end of the song had simply given up any pretense of singing.
“The dance number was spectacular – without her,” said our spy at rehearsal. “When the stand-in was rehearsing with the dancers, in the hours they were all waiting for her, it was amazing. Then Britney showed up and refused to do anything. The dancers were supposed to lift and twirl her in the air a few times, and that just wasn’t going to happen. The more complicated dance moves had to be erased because she couldn’t do them.”
Meanwhile, Spears was agitated because she didn’t like the outfit MTV had selected for her.
“MTV wanted her to wear a corset outfit. It would have looked great and covered a lot of things up, but she hated it and didn’t think it was sexy enough.”
Instead, Spears changed into a spangly bra-and-underwear outfit she’d brought with her that emphasized her weight gain over the last year.
MTV execs weren’t the only ones worried about Spears’ impending debacle. Another spy said, “The dancers were texting pals, asking them to pray for them. They were worried.”
After Spears performed at the VMAs, she allegedly broke down in tears but then partied until 3 a.m. She changed outfits several times and again was photographed by paparazzi wearing no underwear.

Am I the only one who doesn’t think she looks that fat? Maybe it’s the mom in me, but I’ve only had one kid and I will never look like that…Personal trainers and all. This is the only thing I feel like defending about the whole VMA disaster. Yes, the outfit is horrendous, but all in all, I think her body looks ok. Sure, it’s not typical Britney from VMA’s past, but I just cannot see how everyone says she looks so fattastic. Please don’t ridicule me for thinking this!

kimishoe! You are correct. Britney is NOT fat. She could have chosen a more flattering outfit, but that’s an everyday thing in Britneyland. Because she has approx. $700,000 to work with every month, perhaps people think she should have worked out at the gym or hired a personal trainer intstead of hitting the local hotspots. And maybe practiced her dance moves so she wouldn’t look like she belonged in the back row of a High School dance sqad. And running around with the kids could knock off some extra calories. But she is NOT fat. That’s the least of her worries.

We are all watching her slowly come apart and hating the whole continuing shallow stupidity of this ‘I am crazy’ personality disorder. She can’t be bothered with ‘details’ of well prepared performance after bragging… like living up to expectations, dressing properly. She shoots herself in the foot to fail and whines.. etc.

I agree too. I don’t think she looked fat, flabby, and out of shape at all. Oh wait, maybe compared to the shapeless, anorexic, plastic wannabes.
The problem is, no she isn’t fat by normal human standards-her body is great, but she is looking for a comeback and is going to be held to a higher standard. She should have come out with a rockin’ bod, great hair and make-up and actually knew the routine and song. Even her detractors would have cheered for her if she’d nailed it. But she was ordering up Wendy’s in the middle of the night before the performance!

She’s lucky she rode in on the boy band train and some people thought she could sing. Then they got caught up in the whole “She’s a naughty school girl” look.
Now what does she have? A great voice? Yeah right. She’s a great dancer? Fuck no. She’s a wonderful actor? I’d rather gouge my eyes out then watch Crossroads.
She was never anything, but nobody seemed to notice that. So please, stop talking about her like she fell from this great height of stardom. She fell from the great big bloated balloon of nothing that Hollywood and the industry love to place their cash cows on.
Why else would she be sucking on morphine pops and downing grade D burgers like her life depended on them? She knows the jig is up. She doesn’t have staying power.
Now she needs to go off with her pile o’ cash and take care of her kids. Good luck!

Just because your kid might be, too, doesn’t excuse her – especially since she was always trading on her looks.
By normal standards, she doesn’t look that bad. I’m sure it’s hard to get your body back after having two babies. But that is the show-biz world that she is choosing to work in. The truth is, people don’t want to see someone up on a stage who looks “good for having two kids.” They want to see someone who looks fantastic. So I guess if you are a greedy celebrity and you expect to make millions and millions of dollars, then you should expect to be held to a really high standard.

a great dancer? did you just say she ISN’T? do you live under a fucking rock? she’s one of the ONLY musical acts that dance simultaneously while singing. her concerts are great performances because of her dancing. she’s one of the best dancers out there, fantastic, renowned. have you seen it? apparently not. she’s better than even her own back up dancers. typically singers only sing and they have back up dancers to do the dancing, spears does both, exceptionally well [back then anyway]. her voice isn’t your typical mariah carey or whitney houston but it’s in it’s own right a beautiful voice. there are different types of voices, hers just isn’t the big, loud raging one of houston’s or carey’s. she DID have something – she was a phenomenal PERFORMER. you can argue about her voice, acting, whatever, but what made her so great was that she was a pro at being a successful and entertaining PERFORMER. hence world wide sold out concerts? speaking in terms of performance, mariah carey couldn’t touch her.
