I am so excited about the Tim Burton remake of Tim Burton‘s Frankenweenie! I’m so excited, I can’t stop using exclamation points! The feature-length flick is currently in production, and Entertainment Weekly has this exclusive sneak peek. In the stills, you can clearly see the two main characters—Victor, the boy, and his dog Sparky—and I’m just so dazzled. I love this aesthetic; nobody nails it like Burton. It’s a little twee, but it’s still adequately bizarre. Perfect.

While the original Frankenweenie hardly needs to be remade—it’s timeless, it stands on its own, et cetera—I love that Burton has retained the black-and-white, vintage horror feel of the original. And I think most people are totally down with a stop-motion animated remake, anyway. I don’t know, I’m just really relieved: this seems like an earnest project, rather than a shameless cash-grab. (Planet of the Apes? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Some classics should never be reworked. Stop tinkering with them, Burton.)

For my own part, I totally grew up on Frankenweenie. I have no idea how it happened, but I went through a weird childhood phase where I only rented 1980s TV movies starring Shelley Duvall (Frankenweenie, Frog, Faerie Tale Theatre). Frankenweenie was a super formative movie for me, not only because it essentially ruined my sense of humor, but also because it’s about death and loss and grief, which are tricky subjects for kids. (Grown-ups, too.)

Tim Burton’s on this whole fairy tale kick as of late and while both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland were kind of “eh” in my opinion, I am all about what’s rumored to be his next project: Maleficent. And guess who’s might be playing the lead? The only person who could, of course: Angelina Jolie.

Maleficent! Remember that bitch? The evil fairy godmother from Sleeping Beauty? Burton wants to re-tell the classic story from her point of view. Now you know that that’s going to be off the chain. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen a big-budget movie staring a kick-ass female and look at the Disney version of the same character from years ago:

OK, yeah. I’ll be seeing this if it gets made. Don’t go too crazy, Burton. Don’t mess this one up.

For the second week in a row, Alice in Wonderland was the box-office leader, pulling in $62 million. I haven’t seen it yet, but I think I want to. I’m just worried that after the first 15 minutes I’ll get bored with how beautiful it is and be like, “Oh, yeah, it’s the Alice in Wonderland story, who cares?” Let me know if you’ve seen it and what you thought. Worth seeing in theaters or wait for DVD?

Matt Damon’s Green Zone was the second-biggest draw, with $14.5 million domestically. As a giant Matt Damon fan, I saw this on Friday, and it was decent. As far as Matt Damon action movies go, it was kind of so-so. Like, the premise of the entire movie is “George Bush is intentionally lying about the presence of WMDs in Iraq.” Which, true or not, is kind of an overplayed concept. I was waiting for the exciting and creative twist, but it didn’t come. However: Matt Damon looked really, really good the whole time. Matt Damon should wear Army fatigues everywhere he goes. I may get easily bored of Johnny Depp looking like Carrot Top in a giant hat, but I will never tire of Matt Damon dressed in Army fatigues. If Matt Damon ever does a movie where he plays a fireman I will probably kill his wife in a jealous blackout go see it.

Mary-Kate’s lipstick is creeping me out a little bit. Like I’d be scared to go to her for a haircut, you know what I mean?

The Olsen duo made an appearance at the Tim Burton tribute at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

Also there, making one of what I’m sure will be a million future red carpet appearances to come, was Gabourey Sidibe, the star of the uber-buzzing Precious.

Plus: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, Veronica Webb, the lovely Ashley Greene, and Brooke Shields.

The movie isn’t scheduled for release until March of 2010, but the first stills released of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland look absolutely amazing.  I’m convinced that Burton must be slightly insane in that way that geniuses usually are.

Johnny Depp plays The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter is Queen of Hearts and the Snow Queen role is played by Anne Hathaway.  No picture has been released of Alice yet, but Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (best known for her role on HBO’s In Treatment) stars in the film.

The better half of Tim Burton popped out a baby girl this weekend.

“They are absolutely delighted they have a daughter,” Bonham Carter’s rep, Karon Maskill, said. “It’s a lovely Christmas present for the family.”

The couple already have a four-year-old son, Billy.
